Andrew Clements 的 No Talking導讀

    the Q&A

    No PROBLEM

So Sophie, could you tell us something about Dave?

He’s a very hardworking fifth grader, but he likes to talk A Lot. And he is the leader of the fifth grade boys at his school.

What class project is Dave working on?

He’s working on a book report on India and Gandhi.

    Who is Gandhi?

    The father of modern India

Why is Dave amazed by Gandhi?

Because this skinny little man practically pushed the whole British army out of India all by himself.

What’s Dave inspired to do after he read about Gandhi’s life?

He’s inspired to not talk for a day.

    And why is that?

Because Gandhi believed not talking was a way to bring order to his mind.

What happens to Dave when he gets to school that day?

He gets into a big argument with Lynsey.

    And who is Lynsey?

    She’s Dave’s classmate, and his arch-nemesis.

    What’s Lynsey like?

She’s also a loudmouth and like Dave, she’s the leader of girls in the fifth grade.

And what’s the argument between Dave and Lynsey about?

Dave says that boys never talk as much as girls do, and Lynsey strongly disagrees. Then they decide to have a contest.

    What contest do they have?

A contest to see which side talks less.

What are the rules of the contest?

If they have to answer to adults, they can only use maximum of three words. And they cannot talk at home or on the school bus either. The contest will last two days. The group that talks less will win.

Why do the fifth graders of this school have the nickname of unshushable?

Because they just talk and talk and talk.

    Who is Mrs. Hiatt?

She’s the principal of the school.

What kind of principal is she?

She’s very strict. And she is trying to shush the fifth graders. She will bring a bullhorn to the cafeteria to tell the fifth graders to be quiet.

What surprise does she encounter that day when she gets to the cafeteria that day with her bullhorn?

There’s no talking at all. It seems like aliens have passed these fifth graders and zapped their mouths.

How does the principal feel now that the unshushable are so quiet? Is she happy?

No, in fact Mrs Hiatt feels nervous and scared because she doesn’t know what happened.

Thanks for helping out with this Q&A, Sophie.

    Famous quotes from Macbeth

    Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow,

Creeps in this petty pace from day to day,

    光陰就這樣一天一天的移步向前爬,

    To the last syllable of recorded time;

    直到時間的紀錄之最後的一個字;

And all our yesterdays have lighted fools

The way to dusty death. Out, out, brief candle!

Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player,

That struts and frets his hour upon the stage,

And then is heard no more. It is a tale

    以後便聽不見他了;

Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,

    Signifying nothing.

  • 神奇樹屋#25 Magic Tree House #25: Stage Fright on a Summer Night.

    Sophie's Q&A

What’s Jack and Annie’s mission this time?

They will find a special magic.

And may I ask what kind of magic is it?

They must step into the light and without wand, spell, or charm, and find ways to turn daytime into night.

Where and what period of time do they travel to?

They go to 17th century London.

Who ruled England at the time?

It was ruled by Queen Elizabeth the first

What activity do Jack and Annie participate in?

They act in a play written by William Shakespeare.

Was it expensive to watch a play in the 17th century?

No, almost everyone could afford to go. If you are poor, you can stand in the area below the stage.

Why isn’t Annie allowed to act in the play at first?

Because it’s against the law for girls to go on the stage.

How is Annie eventually able to do it?

By pretending to be a boy

Which play are Jack and Annie in?

They are in A Midsummer Night’s Dream

    Which roles do they play?

They play the roles of fairies.

Why does Will choose Jack to act in the play?

Because he can read and speak clearly

    How is Annie on stage?

She did a wonderful job. Not only did she sing but also dance.

Who comes to see the play?

Queen Elizabeth comes to see the play.

What does Will invite Jack and Annie to do?

He wants them to stay in London and he will teach them to write plays.

What is the special magic that Jack and Annie are sent to learn?

They learn the magic of theater.

    What’s Will’s whole name?

    William Shakespeare

    And who is William Shakespeare?

He’s considered to be the greatest English writer of all time.

    Thanks for the help, Sophie.

During Trump’s first term, he promised to speed up economic growth, and that he did. Before he took office, the economy was steadily growing at a rate of 2% a year. He was able to increase it to 2.5%. This was before the pandemic. And how did Trump achieve that?

He removed many regulations introduced by Obama.

He cut corporate tax from 35% to 21%. Before he did that, US corporate tax was higher than many European countries, which was why many American companies moved their headquarters to Europe. By cutting corporate tax, Trump hoped to bring companies back. The combination of tax cut and deregulation was supposed to boost economy, but the boost didn’t last long because of the trade conflicts that Trump administration got into with many countries, especially China.

Why did Trump start the trade war? It’s mainly because he viewed deficit as weakness. But other countries retaliate by putting tariffs on American products.

So overall , the tax cut and deregulation did help boost the US economy, but the trade war cancelled out the benefits.

However unemployment rate was down during the first three years of Trump’s first term, because the government spent a lot of money on defense and other infrastructure. Because the unemployment rate was very low, companies had to raise wages to attract workers. And this did benefit the African American community. Black poverty for the first time went down below 20%, which never happened before. But of course, COVID-19 changed all that.

So what will Trump do if he gets re-elected? He will continue to deregulate, cut taxes, and provide stimulus package like he did in spring this year. What about Biden and the Democrats? What will they do if Biden gets elected?

Biden’s economic plan is very different from Trump. But his focus will be more on containing and managing the virus, so he will mandate everyone to wear a mask. He will have more aggressive testing, contact tracing strategies. He will have a national standard on how to open up.
