Locked On Angels - Daily Podcast On The Los Angeles Angels

The Los Angeles Angels have spent the off-season building out the middle of the roster to create a supporting cast around superstars Mike Trout, Anthony Rendon, and Shohei Ohtani. Today, we're diving into the numbers and asking the question, are these Halo heavy-hitters clutch when it counts the most? We'll start today's conversation with the GOAT, Mr. Mike Trout! Was he clutch in 2022, and did he come through when we needed him the most? Let's take a look at the stats and find out!

Then, we'll discuss Anthony Rendon and examine the short playing window he gave us in 2022. While it may have been a short time with the team and his season totals weren't anything to write home about, if we take a deeper look at his situational hitting, we can truly see how much we need Rendon healthy and hitting. Take a look at his stats with us in segment 2!

Plus, we can't have an episode without Shohei Ohtani! Even though he is a unicorn and is changing the game of baseball as we know it, he's even more impressive when he comes to bat at the right place at the right time. We'll take a look at his hitting with runners in scoring position in segment 3!

The Los Angeles Angels still need to round out their roster in 2023, and as we wait for more offseason moves from GM Perry Minasian, we're asking some key "What If?" questions going into next season. To begin, we're asking, What if Jo Adell breaks out in 2023? What would it take for him to get there, and how would it impact the team? We'll discuss Jo Adell and his potential place on the roster in segment 1!

Then, injuries have caused the Halos to fall out of contention time and time again, and if that is to happen once more in 2023, what will the fallout be? Will Perry Minasian address any injury issues right away, or will his job be on the line if the Angels fail to live up to expectations? We'll break it all down in segment 2.

Plus, Angel fans are eagerly anticipating new ownership to take their place as the head of the Halos, and we're all expecting this to be a good thing for our favorite team. If it is, what does "good" look like? If it's not so good, then what will Angels ownership look like then? We'll weigh both options for you in segment 3!

When you examine 2022's off-season versus 2001-2002, 2003-2004, and 2011-2012, are there lessons to be learned from these previous hot stove moves? The Super Halo Bros. are here to walk through these off-seasons with you and discuss how they impacted the season that followed, and we'll decide if Perry Minasian's 2022 has been successful so far!

Los Angeles Angels General Manager Perry Minasian sat down with MLB Network for an interview during the Winter Meetings, and he got very candid about the moves he's made so far, his hope for the roster, and where he fell short as a GM last season. In segment 1, we'll take a look at his comments about the newest Angels starter, Tyler Anderson, and what Perry said Anderson brings to the rotation in terms of skill, intangibles, and experience!

Then, Perry spoke about the future of Shohei Ohtani and just how incredible of an athlete he is, day in and day out. Minasian said "Ohtani will be an Angel going forward," and Mike and Jon discuss what this looks like for 2023 and beyond. Do the Angels have a hope of keeping Shohei after this season? Let's discuss!

Plus, Minasian spoke about Anthony Rendon and what it will mean to have him back in 2023 fully healthy, as well as having sufficient replacements should injuries occur. What will it mean to the Halos and fans to have a healthy season from Rendon, and how confident are we in the rest of the roster? Let's talk about it in segment 3!

The Los Angeles Angels ownership change is underway, and last week, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred told reporters that the process is ongoing and the Angels are hoping to have the sale resolved by Opening Day 2023. While this is excellent news and makes us hopeful for next season, how come we haven't heard any names other than the rumored buyers so far? We ask the question that if this deal is done by Opening Day, how does that affect the team next season, and can they get a deal done for Shohei Ohtani with the ownership set in stone? Get our thoughts in segment 1!

Then, the first-ever MLB Draft Lottery was held on Tuesday, and while the order based on win-loss records had the Angels at pick number 10, the new lottery system saw them emerge as the 11th 1st-round pick for 2023. We'll take a look at the number-11 picks from the last few drafts and see what kind of stars the Angels might snag in their 11th pick in 2023!

Plus, Angels manager Phil Nevin said that Shohei Ohtani will be pitching every sixth day, no matter the schedule and if there happens to be an off day next season. This will provide him with more opportunities to pitch, and Mike and Jon will break down what this could mean for Ohtani and what it will look like next season!

The Los Angeles Angels added another piece of the puzzle at the Winter Meetings on Monday, signing free-agent reliever Carlos Estevez to a 2-year deal! The pitcher has spent his 6-year career in Colorado, and today, Mike and Jon will dive into his career numbers, the contract details, and how well he will fair away from Coors Field!

Then, what kind of role will Estevez play in the bullpen, and how will the rest of the pen take shape? We'll make some guesses as to what the pen will look like and how Estevez will figure into it.

Plus, now that the Halos have set an all-time high for team payroll, what can they do with the money they have left before hitting the Luxury Tax? Will they stay under, go over, or try to round out the rest of the team with about $20 million left to go? We'll tell you what we think comes next in segment 3!

The Los Angeles Angels had great pitching in 2022, but the offense quickly became a problem, especially with the injuries to Anthony Rendon and Mike Trout. While the Halos have historically not struggled with offense, the holes in the lineup became clear, and the lack of depth was evident. Today on Locked On Angels, we'll take a look at all the positions around the diamond and the total Weighted Runs Created + (WRC+) from each position, and where the Angels ranked at these positions among all 30 teams in WRC+. What positions brought the most, and what positions will benefit from an improvement? We'll give you all the details on today's show!

The Los Angeles Angels have added Tyler Anderson via signing and Hunter Renfroe and Gio Urshela through trades so far this off-season. Do these three moves improve the team over 2022? Today on Locked On Angels, we're going to look at the positions that these three will be stepping into and compare their WAR to last season's players in the same positions. In segment 1, we'll take a look at the outfield, the 2nd starter, and 2nd base to see if these additions will make the Halos better next year.

Then, we'll take a look at the WAR these new additions potentially add to the Angels in 2023. How much of an improvement will Renfroe, Anderson, and Urshela be over what was there before? Let's find out in segment 2!

Plus, with these new additions, how far will it allow the Halos to go next year? Will they reach the postseason through one of the Wildcard positions? We'll let you know what the Super Halo Bros. think in segment 3!
