The question is always is it the talent on the ice or the person coaching that talent. The answer isn't always that simple but in the case for the Colorado Avalanche it's a little bit of both. The Colorado Avalanche are where they are because of guys like Nathan MacKinnon, Mikko Rantanen and Cale Makar. But they are also here because of Jared Bednar. What he has been able to accomplish after a disaster of a first season where fans were calling for his firing has been nothing short of spectacular. And after tonight he will have coached more games on an Avalanche bench than anyone in their history.

Devan Dubnyk might have gotten the start last night against the St. Louis Blues anyway. But when word came out the the Avs player who had a positive COVID test was Philipp Grubauer, it was a done deal. So despite some Avalanche fans not being thrilled with Dubnyk as their teams backup, Avs fans need to get comfortable with Dubnyk running the show for the next couple weeks while Grubauer goes through the leagues COVID protocol.

And in his first game, Dubnyk did what a back up goalie should do, didn't lose the game. The Avalanche had a masterful second period, per usual it seems, but did everything they could to hold on while St. Louis did everything they could to force OT.

Patrik Nemeth was only the beginning when it came to former players returning to help the Avs team achieve their goal of a Cup. Joe Sakic brought back another familiar face when he made a deal with the Chicago Blackhawks to bring back fan favorite Carl Soderberg in a trade day deal. When the trade season concluded, the Avs made three deals, all depth deals, but all important ones as each of these guys is going to see action and be important pieces of the puzzle to bring a Cup back to Denver.

On the ice, the Avalanche continued to roll in a hard fought 4-2 win over Arizona. The Coyotes threw everything they had at Colorado, but the Avs are flying high right now, and even when they are off their game, they still are finding ways to win.

Avalanche fans know Devan Dubnyk and know him well. Did they ever think he would be wearing the burgundy and blue and fighting with the Avs to win a Cup? I think most would be willing to admit that day would never come, but it has. Joe Sakic shored up the one remaining hole in obtaining Dub from the Sharks in an early Saturday morning deal, a day after bringing back Patrik Nemeth from the Detroit Red Wings. Dubnyk will be the one to spell Philipp Grubauer when needed and this move comes as Jonas Johansson has put together a string of games where he has improved every game since joining the Avs. What once was a huge question mark for Colorado is now a position of improvement, and the Avs might not be done dealing yet.

The NHL set the tone with not suspending superstar Connor McDavid after his deliberate elbow last week. Clearly the league does not hold it's superstars to a higher standard as what McDavid did found him $5k lighter in his band account while what Jacob MacDonald did apparently warrants a two game suspension. Why this reeks of favoritism.

Also, Alex Newhook and Sampo Ranta might be taking the next step in their careers in suiting up for the Avs AHL affiliate, the Colorado Eagles, this weekend.

Well that was awful. The Colorado Avalanche, who have been the hottest team in the league, burned up last night against Minnesota as they saw their 15 game points streak end in grand fashion to a very game Minnesota Wild team. The Avs have been handling the Wild with relative ease lately so you knew the Wild would come out with their best effort. Couple that with the Avalanche worst effort and it was a recipe for disaster. Colorado made a run at it in the second, but Minnesota was not about to let a repeat of game one of this series happen, and they shut down Colorado in every aspect of the game.

Also, does the Islanders / Devils deal for Kyle Palmieri kick off trade season early and does this force other teams to move quicker in making deals, the Avalanche included. Tune in and subscribe!

We all know the talent pool the Avalanche have to pick from is as vast as the Pacific. Two of those prospects, Alex Newhook and Sampo Ranta, signed their ELC's last week paving the way for their eventual road to the NHL. It's always good to get as many perspectives as possible when it comes to prospects, so why not turn to our own experts? A.J Black from Locked on Boston College is here to talk about what he has seen in Alex Newhook and Nate Dickinson from Locked on Golden Gophers talks about what he expects from Sampo Ranta.

It was dull, then it was exciting, then it was hang on! The Colorado Avalanche might have not played a solid 60 minutes, but they did enough to hang on for a 5-4 win over Minnesota. Let's discuss the things that went right and the things that need to get tightened up.

It's also time for the Three Stars of Last Week (Not Named Nathan).

Plus Kyle Burroughs played in his first game. And he got into a fight.

The Blues were fighting for their playoff lives, and the Avs crushed them. Not necessarily crushed them on the ice. The Blues fought and fought hard. But the Avs showed they can win in a slugfest and edged the Blues both times by a single goal. Colorado now is in the midst of a 14 game point streak and you have to wonder will it ever end with the way they are playing? Of, course it will at some point, but the opposing team will have to play a near perfect game to bring down the Avs.

Alex Newhook signed his ELC last week, and on Saturday it was Sampo Ranta's turn. Ranta comes to the Avs after a great college career in Minnesota and is widely known as the possible steal of his draft class when the Avs drafted him in the 3rd round of the 2018 draft. What can he bring to the Avs and the same question as with Newhook, where does he fit?
