Locked On Avalanche - Daily Podcast On The Colorado Avalanche

It might feel like the season just started last week, but we have reached the half way point of our COVID shortened year. So what better to do than hand out some well deserved award? Everything from the team MVP to the Blink 182 "I Miss You" Award is handed out. What is the Blink-182 Award? Tune in to find out!

I also continue the conversation on what the Avalanche need to do when it comes to their goalie situation. Philipp Grubauer has been a work horse, but he needs help. Could that help come in the form of a couple options that were once Colorado Avalanche players of the past? It very well could be.

There will be two factions of people who will want to talk about this game. The side that talks about how the Avalanche went on an offensive outburst in netting eight goals, and the side that will talk about Hunter Miska's no good, very bad day. Both would be valid.

The Colorado Avalanche handed the Anaheim Ducks four 1st period goals with Miska in net. Coach Bednar had seen enough, made the switch to Philipp Grubauer who proceeded to shut the door on the Ducks while the Avalanche began their comeback one goal at a time. In the end, Colorado had too much fire power for Anaheim to catch up.

For today's episode we got the listeners involved and got their thoughts on the game overall and the performance of Miska. Tune in and subscribe!

The Colorado Avalanche are clearly in need of some relief when it comes to their goalie situation. Philipp Grubauer has been nothing short of spectacular, but the way this season is constructed they are putting a lot of strain on the man. Many believe the Avs will need to make a deal for some relief if Pavel Francouz will be out for the duration of the year. The Hockey Writers have a good article on four goalies the Avs could target. Let's take a look at those possibilities.

Next, I dive into the Three Stars of Last Week (Not Named Nathan) and for this week I hand out four players to fill those three spots. Why? Because sometimes it is necessary, and it's my show so I make the rules.

Finally, The Athletic had a good trivia game centered around the Avs history with trades. I'm pretty happy with my results, so why not bring the game here and ask the listeners the same questions. Get ready for some trivia!!

On todays episode of Locked on Avalanche, I start with taking a look back at the weekend the Avalanche had against the Los Angeles Kings. Colorado was able to take both games vs LA but it was more of the same that we have been seeing. The Avs with 40+ shots of goal and just winning by the skin of their teeth. Is this a trend the Avs can break? Does this have more to do with the Avalanche and their shot selection or are the goalies they are going up against just having the game of their careers?

In the second segment, I continue to praise our goalie, Philipp Grubauer. We all heard the talk at the beginning of the season and how the one thing that would prevent the Avs from lifting the Cup, it was going to be their goalie play. Nobody had faith in Philipp Grubauer to be their A1 goalie or to stay healthy. He has proven both aspects wrong so far and is a leading Vezina Trophy candidate.

Finally, the NHL made waves in announcing they have signed a seven year deal with ESPN to televise the league. Many people are happy about this, I'm on the other side of the fence. Sure, this deal is good to spread the game and get more viewers, but at the cost of being under the ESPN umbrella that can sometimes blur the line between sports journalism and TMZ. Your viewing experience is about to change.

Brandon Saad found the net about a minute and a half into the game, and with Nathan MacKinnon flying around like Mighty Mouse, things were looking good. But as each minute ticked off the clock and the Avs still had a lonely '1' on the scoreboard, bad thoughts started creeping into our heads. Arizona would tie it late in the 2nd, but Captain Gabe Landeskog saved the day with an OT winner in the last minute. We should be happy the Avs emerged with a win, but why was it so damn difficult?? Maybe, just maybe, this is the start of a trend where Avalanche players return to the ice instead of leaving it. Nathan MacKinnon will return to the lineup tonight against Arizona, just in time to help a team that is struggling to get consistency. Let's hope this is the start of a run for the Avs. We also name our Three Stars of Last Week (not named Nathan). Tune in and subscribe!

For most of the game the Colorado Avalanche did everything right. Except win. The Avs got some great looks but just could not slam the door. The Arizona Coyotes were not getting any good looks. But redirected shots proved to be on their side as all three goals for the Yotes came by way of the tip in. In the end, it's an L for the Avs, who need to start stringing together wins and quickly. The Colorado Avalanche were down several key pieces this weekend for a two game set against the Anaheim Ducks. They came back from being down two goals in each game, and each game went into OT. The Avs won the first while dropping the second. Not a bad result for a team missing so much star power in MacKinnon and Makar. The NHL is not holding their annual All-Star game this season, but it doesn't mean we can't guess as who who would have been named All-Stars. Where it gets interesting is in picking guys for their name recognition against their numbers. Would Philipp Grubauer and Sammy Girard get left off the roster because of this? Tune in and subscribe!

Two games is what Joachim Blichfeld will sit out for his nasty his on Avalanche superstar Nathan MacKinnon, and I feel like that is appropriate. We don't know yet if Mack will miss time, but for the short term the Avs seems to have avoided a serious, long term injury. The Avalanche played well in the 4-0 win over San Jose and can use that as a jumping off point to maybe start some consistency. Let's hope it is the start of a strong run. Tune in and subscribe!

It's always good to get another fans perspective when it comes to our Colorado Avalanche, and who better than ShaggyVonDoom himself, Kyle Sullivan. I get to air my thoughts on a daily basis so I always like to hear from others about how they view the Avs season to this point. Kyle does just that in talking about a wide range of topics surrounding the Avalanche including who he tunes in to watch, the trade deadline and if the Avs can ascend in the division.
