Locked On Avalanche - Daily Podcast On The Colorado Avalanche

The moment fans had been waiting for in over a year finally arrived, and they were treated to something special. The Colorado Avalanche ran over the Arizona Coyotes by the tune of 9-3. But everyone is talking about two things. Joonas Donskoi's hat trick just over 7 minutes into the game, and Nathan Mackinnon's bowling skill. His bowling skill being throwing the helmet of Connor Garland into his face.

Also, Alex Newhook's college career might be over, but his NHL career is just beginning as the Avs signed Alex to his three year ELC. The future is now for Newhook and the Avs. Tune in and subscribe!

Jonas Johansson is not a long term solution for the Colorado Avalanche, but they got him for a reason. To give Philipp Grubauer a much needed rest from time to time. The Avs need Grubauer as healthy as possible for a deep playoff run and the best way to do that is spell him every so often. Johansson can do that, and he might get handed the keys to the car more often, at least for this week if he can perform serviceably. They are not expecting miracles from Johansson, but they are expecting him to hold his head above water.

Two highly touted prospects could be on their way to Colorado. Alex Newhook and Sampo Ranta both saw their college seasons end and while both could theoretically return to college, neither is expected to. The question is, where do they go? The AHL Colorado Eagles or to the Avs. The Eagles is the likely destination but if the Avs were in need of forwards, do they turn to either one of these guys to fill a role?

The Avs are also thin at draft picks for next year. So making a deal for an impact player in exchange for draft picks might prove difficult. Which is why bringing in Newhook and Ranta could act as the Avs deadline moves.

The Colorado Avalanche are a hot team right now and they continued that trend with a 5-2 win over the Anaheim Ducks. Anaheim tried to use the Vegas Golden Knights effort of getting physical with the Avs, but the Knights have physicality as well as skill that Anaheim can't match. In the end, the Avs put too much pressure on the Ducks and pulled away late.

Philipp Grubauer has been a work horse for the Avs all year, and there is not many spots where he will be given a reprieve. But the way the Avs schedule is set up for the rest of this week, he could get a nice little break from the action to gear himself up for the race to the end of the season. With a back to back against St. Louis coming up this Friday and Saturday, we will no doubt see Jonas Johansson in one of those games. With the Avs playing Wednesday against Arizona, if Johansson plays that game, then the first of the back to back, that would give Grubauer a nice four day break. Some food for thought.

The Colorado Avalanche had a huge two game series against the Vegas Golden Knights and were up to the challenge. Vegas got the final say, netting an OT goal to take game two, but the Avs kept themselves within striking distance of the Knights in the standings and we are in for a sprint to the finish between these two teams.

We hear from Coach Bednar after the OT loss, and while he was happy with how his team stood up to the Knights, he wasn't all that trilled about a non tripping call against Vegas that sent Nathan MacKinnon into the boards during the extra period. Could it have changed the outcome, that's what power plays can do and in this case it could have benefitted the Avs.

It didn't start the way the Avalanche had hoped, giving up a goal in the first minute of play, but the way this team has been playing they can spot a team like Vegas a goal and not press panic. The Avs came storming back with a four goal 2nd period to take command and never looked back.

I'm joined by some Avs fans through the Locker Room app for this LIVE episode as we have nothing but good things to say about the now First Place Colorado Avalanche. Except for the power play. That still needs some work. Tune in and subscribe!

Yes, I know this is a podcast dedicated to a single team, the one and only Colorado Avalanche, but when things like what happened with referee Tim Peel occur they need to be discussed. Is what Peel did just part of the unwritten rules of hockey, or was it so severe he deserved what he got with an early retirement?

For the second segment I take a look back at the Avs two game set against the Arizona Coyotes that saw the Avs take three out of four points. But what most people wants to focus in on was the play of Jonas Johansson. You look at the score and you might have some worry. But looking at the game tape, it wasn't all on him. Does he need to play a better game, he does. Which could happen once he settles down and get a little more comfortable in a new town with a new team. But letting all three shoot out goals through won't help your case Jonas.

Finally, let's talk about how big this series is for the Avalanche against Vegas starting tonight. The Avs have clawed their way back near the top of the standings and two regulation wins puts the Avs in sole possession of the #1 spot in the division. It's a big series and a lot of people will be watching to see how the Avs play in a big moment. Get excited! Tune in and subscribe!

The Colorado Avalanche addressed a need in acquiring Jonas Johansson from the Buffalo Sabres over the weekend. Now the question is are the Avalanche done dealing? With all the injuries the Avs have suffered over the season you would think they would want to bring in some extra bodies, but at the same time they are thin on draft picks and are in love with the majority of their prospects. So you could really see them doing either or.

I also got a very good comment from a follower, James, on Instagram who brings up the lack of respect the Avalanche seem to get from the national media. The fact is the Avs are not in a big market when it comes to hockey, but does that mean they can't win over the mass media and get the same recognition as markets like New York or LA? The easiest way to do that....win

Philipp Grubauer is having a career year, and if he continues this level of play he will no doubt get some looks and some votes to win the Vezina Trophy come award time. Doesn't it just seem like he is not getting the recognition he should be? Because of that lack of recognition we are going to hand all the major awards the NHL hands out at the end of the season to Avalanche players.....because I can! Which Avalanche player gets the Selke, the Norris, the Calder? Who gets the mother of awards in the Hart?

If its the beginning of the week you know we also have to hand out Stars of Last Week. So dive in for an award driven episode of Locked on Avalanche. Tune in subscribe and enjoy!

Our friends (yes, they are friends) over at Locked on Red Wings were joined by the legendary Gary Thorne for a wide ranging discussion, part of which included Gary's remembrance of sports greatest rivalry between the Avalanche and Red Wings. Listen to the clip here and be sure to head over to the Locked on Red Wings channel for the entire interview.

It was no secret the Avs needed help in the backup goalie department, and they are hoping they get it in a deal they made with Buffalo to bring in Jonas Johansson for a 6th round pick in next years draft. Johansson is still unproven and is still developing, but the Avalanche feel confident in their scouting of Jonas to hand him the backup keys.

Every game in this season is an important one. Last nights was no different. With a win the Avalanche would leap over the Wild and take sole possession of 2nd place in the standings. They did so in dominating fashion. The Avs fired 55 shots on goal, 25 in the first period, 17 in the first ten minutes. Cale Makar and Bowen Byrum made their long awaited returns and both played big roles in the Avs win.

In other Avalanche news, Ball Arena announced fans will be allowed inside to watch the Avs and the Nuggets starting with the Avs game against the St. Louis Blues on April 2nd. The amount of fans will be limited to about 4,000, but this is a step in the right direction to getting back to some normalcy. Tune in and subscribe!
