Locked On Guardians - Daily Podcast On The Cleveland Guardians episodes

November 04, 2022 Reviewing Steven Kwan's Rookie Season and the Cleveland Guardians Future in Leftfield
1. As we continue our 2022 Cleveland Guardians position reviews, we dedicate most of the show reviewing the great rookie season by Steven Kwan. There is a faction of fans who would like to see Kwan move to centerfield and we briefly touch on that. We also get into historical comps for Kwan, which were particularly difficult, as Steven Kwan is a bit of a unicorn in terms of his player profile. We discuss his place in history among Cleveland rookies and try to look at comparable contracts for an extension for Kwan. To finish up the show, we look ahead to the future of left field for the Guardians, which should not be something they have to worry about for a while.
2. Some of the statistical comps we came up with were Curt Flood, Johnny Damon, Adam Eaton, Bill Mueller, and Brett Gardner.
3. The last outfielder Cleveland signed to an extension was Michael Brantley, who took a 4/$25 million deal before he broke out. That won't be enough to sign Kwan now, but recent contract extensions for Michael Harris and Kevin Kiermaier seem reasonable. And as far as rookies that could succeed Kwan in left field are years away, hopefully, and could be drafted in the 2023 draft. Some future in house options may be Joe Lampe and Guy Lipscomb Jr.

November 03, 2022Discussing Trades for Miami Marlins P Pablo Lopez to the Cleveland Guardians & FA INF Brandon Drury
It is another fan-driven episode of Locked on Guardians. We are diving into the third and fourth most asked-about players for this offseason Brandon Drury (Utility Player) and Pablo Lopez (Starting Pitcher). It is our first pitcher discussion, and the first utility type we have discussed. We start out with Drury who has been around the league but found his greatest success this past year with the Reds. We get into how he fits, where he fits, and what might the cost be.
Next up is Miami Marlin Pablo Lopez. We start by profiling the starter who far and away has been the most discussed by Guardians fans. We get into why he could be an improvement, and what the risks are for him. The Marlins are in a weird limbo in terms of talent and trading pitching seems to be the only way to improve a roster that was part in a hard position due to questionable signings last offseason.
Lastly, we dig into several offers on Pablo Lopez. The most common names in deals are Gabriel Arias, Will Brennan, and Xzavion Curry, among many others. We discuss the deal, and how it's hard to line up and figure out a deal that might make sense. Before lightning strikes near the end of the show and the hosts figure out an interesting offer. The Marlins are trying to thread the needle as the pressure mounts to win in a tough division, so any trade offer has to help the Marlins improve right now!

November 02, 2022 Four Cleveland Guardians Win Gold Gloves and Reviewing José Ramírez's Place in Franchise History
1. The Cleveland Guardians set a franchise record by earning 4 Rawlings Gold Glove awards, announced on Tuesday, November 1. Steven Kwan, Myles Straw, Shane Bieber and Andrés Giménez all won their first Gold Glove Awards. We take time to review the significance of these awards and share some interesting information provided by the Guardians on these awards. We stick with that theme by reviewing third base for the Cleveland Guardians in 2022 and the greatness that is José Ramírez', discussing his place in franchise history, his future, and what the Guardians 3B prospects look like in the minors.
2. Jeff looks at where José Ramírez ranks in terms of different statistical categories in Cleveland baseball history, and what other leaderboards he may start to move up in the franchise record books.
3. After discussing José Ramírez's place among third basemen and other records in Cleveland history, Justin looks at his Hall of Fame candidacy and how José might perform and needs to perform over the rest of his new contract in order to have a case. We wrap up the discussion with what third base prospects Cleveland has in the minors, not that they need them right now at third base.

November 01, 2022Reviewing Amed Rosario and Cleveland Guardians SS in 2022 & Options for 2023 & Beyond
On Locked on Guardians we discuss three more trade offers for Christian Walker and Sean Murphy. We get into why they either feel lite or way too much in terms of the players offered. We also discuss last year's Matt Olson as a road map to any possible deal for Sean Murphy. We then get into the recent hire of Matt Quatraro by the Kansas City Royals. The former Guardian's hitting coach might look to Cleveland to help hire some coaches, which the former Cleveland Guardians minority owner might also endorse.
It is time to review shortstop, and while we have talked a lot about Amed Rosario it is time to look at the position and ask two big questions. How do you feel about him for 2023? What is the roadmap for this team beyond 2023 as Rosario will likely cost more than 12 million a year in free agency? We also discuss Gabriel Arias and Tyler Freeman who spent some time at shortstop this year.
We end with a look to the future. We talk about the player who is viewed by some as the best hitter in the Guardians system, Brayan Rocchio. We dig into why he could be better and how he could end up being very much like Amed Rosario. Jose Tena went deep on Monday and we get into what he needs in terms of a rebound. We also focus on helium/sleeper prospect Angel Genao before discussing recent high picks that have not broken out as expected in Carson Tucker and Yordys Valdes.

October 31, 2022 Talking Your Offers for a Cleveland Guardians Trade for Arizona Diamondbacks 1B Christian Walker
1. Taking our second most requested trade target for the Cleveland Guardians by you, the listeners, was Christian Walker, 1B of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Tune in to hear if we discussed your trade offer for Walker. We spent time talking about why Christian Walker is an underrated player, how he would fit on the Cleveland Guardians roster, and how he makes sense for the Guardians over the next two seasons before he hits free agency. We also discuss if the Diamondbacks would be willing to trade Christian Walker.
2. We solicited the opinion of our listeners on what they would trade for Christian Walker and who between the Cleveland Guardians/Arizona Diamondbacks would agree or not agree to the trade. Much of the trade proposals involved a specific Cleveland reliever we have mentioned before, along with the typical shortstop targets thanks to the Guardians depth at the position. We gave a yes or no to your trade offers for Walker.
3. After we discussed all of your trade proposals for Walker, we came up with deals of our own and discussed what we think the Arizona Diamondbacks needs are and what the direction of their franchise is over the next two years, which is how much club control Walker has right now, and how that impacts the kind of deal that may or may not work between them and the Cleveland Guardians.

October 28, 2022 Trade Proposals for Oakland Athletics Catcher Sean Murphy to the Cleveland Guardians
1. On today’s show, we begin by sharing the news of Andrés Giménez and José Ramírez being named finalists for Silver Slugger Awards. However, we believe they will likely lose out to Jose Altuve and Rafael Devers at their respective positions. We also discuss that Steven Kwan and Myles Straw won the Fielding Bible award in LF and CF, respectively, what that means, and why it matters.
2. We asked for listener feedback on what players they want the Cleveland Guardians to target this offseason through trades of free agency. The overwhelming favorite was a trade for Oakland Athletics catcher Sean Murphy. We start that discussion by debating if the Guardians can make it work on their roster with Sean Murphy and Bo Naylor. We explain why David Fry may factor into making that roster fit work for Cleveland.
3. We begin getting into your trade proposals for Sean Murphy. We compiled all the trades you submitted for Sean Murphy and gave them thumbs up or thumbs down, and explained why we thought the trades would or wouldn’t work. We also gave our personal trade proposals for Murphy as well. And we wrap things up by teasing the next players we will discuss on your trade/free agency wish list for the Cleveland Guardians this offseason.

October 27, 2022Silver & Gold: Andrés Giménez is a Gold Glove Nominee & the Future of 2B for the Cleveland Guardians
In today’s position review and preview, we focus on second base. A position that was very much in flux a year ago and now appears to be very set. We discussed just how good Andres Gimenez was this year. We debate if he is the greatest second baseman since Roberto Alomar or Jason Kipnis with apologies to Ronnie Belliard. We got into a season that surprised everyone and ended up going down as one of the greatest seasons a Cleveland second baseman has ever had.
We talked about a silly trade offer that popped up that was just fun to discuss as it was as ridiculous as they get. Then we talk about who could be the players to back up Gimenez next year. There are three players who stand out for the role with Tyler Freeman, Gabriel Arias, and Owen Miller. We talk about what is likely to happen. Who might be best in the role, and how do they handle the ridiculous amount of infield depth this season currently has?
Lastly, we get into the prospects and try to focus on the players who are more likely to end up at second base. We focus mostly on maybe the most underrated prospect in the entire system Angel Martinez. The son of Sandy Martinez has continued to shine at every level in spite of being consistently the youngest player at the level he is out. We also discuss Jake Fox the 19-year-old who had one of the best walk rates in the minors, but there are some concerns if he is too passive or not. We briefly mention Jose Tena, Bryan Rocchio, and Jhonkesy Noel (just seeing if you are paying attention).

October 26, 2022 Up 1st & Up Next: Reviewing Cleveland Guardians 1st Basemen in 2022 and Looking at the Future
1. As we begin our 2022 season review, we start with reviewing the Cleveland Guardians first basemen this past season. We talk about how the season started with Bobby Bradley, Owen Miller and even Yu Chang. We discuss how Josh Naylor exceeded any possible expectations at the position coming off of his injury.
2. While looking at the Cleveland Guardians first baseman in 2022, we take a look at Josh Naylor's strengths and weaknesses, and what Cleveland should do with him in 2023. We discuss potential internal options, as well as briefly touching on some external options that could be a fit for the Guardians roster and pairing with Naylor.
3. We finish up the show by discussing the minor league options in the Guardians system that could be future first at first base, including Jhonkensy Noel,

October 25, 2022Cleveland Guardians 2022 Arbitration Projects - Who Gets Tendered? Who Gets Traded?
MLB Trade Rumors released their arbitration estimates in the middle of the postseason, and now that it is the offseason it seemed like a perfect time to go back and discuss those numbers. We talk a little about which current Tampa Bay Ray might be the next player the Cleveland Guardians target which brings us to old friend alerts and also some debate about if the Rays might have a catcher they would trade who the Guardians would want. We then dive deeply into the most hotly debated Cleveland Guardian this year Amed Rosario. He is projected to make nine mil dollars. How do you feel about paying him that much? We also get into the projected shortstop free agent class which is just as deep as a year ago.
We got into the starting pitching in segment two. Four of the Guardians starters are arbitration eligible and will make between them 21.8 million, roughly about one-third of their projected salary for next year. We discuss who might be traded, who might be extended, and do we think that Shane Bieber, Cal Quantrill, Aaron Civale, and Zach Plesac are in terms of 2023 and beyond.
We end with a discussion of the rest of the players up for arbitration. We get into who we think might end up being non-tendered, who might be worth extending, how they might end up handling a player like Anthony Gose who is currently hurt, and how the catcher position could be in for a massive change as well. Also if you had to extend one player other than Shane Bieber who would it be for the Guardians list of nine arbitration-eligible players?
