Locked On Guardians - Daily Podcast On The Cleveland Guardians episodes

October 10, 2022Cleveland Guardians Against the New York Yankees Winner Advances to the American League Championship
We start by looking back. The Cleveland Guardians were able to sweep the Tampa Bay Rays. They were the only favorite to advance in the first round. We talk about what we got right and what we got wrong. We focus on what went well, the pitching, and what we were surprised to see. It was a very fun opening round, which saw the Guardians finally start to get some of the attention and respect they deserve.
Next up is looking at the Cleveland Guardians and New York Yankees rosters. The big news was that Aroldis Chapman was let go, and while it is nice for the Yankees to have one less lefty. Yet it is hard to ignore that he was awful this year. We discuss the issues with the Yankees pen, the injuries that have mounted, and who their third starter is likely to be. We also talk about the possible changes to the Guardians roster. Who does Aaron Civale replace, and what happens if Nick Sandlin can’t pitch?
Lastly, we talk about this Yankees team in general. We get into why it is that the Yankees struggled down the stretch. We continue to dig into the team the Guardians must get past if they want to go deeper into the postseason.

October 09, 2022 Bonus Episode: Cleveland Guardians Advance Sweeping the Tampa Bay Rays. Net Up the New York Yankees
It is late here, but I am still riding high on the Cleveland Guardians sweep of the Tampa Bay Rays. So here is a bonus episode solo show of me just getting into the nitty gritty of these games. The Cleveland Guardians had two brilliant pitching performances that lead the way. But it ended up being the long ball that won them both these games. We focus on all the brilliant moments in this fun series. While also taking a moment or two to enjoy all the haters who claimed that the Guardians would fail to win a single game in the postseason. There were a lot of stars but Shane Bieber, Triston McKenzie, Jose Ramirez, Sam Hentges, and Oscar Gonzalez ended up stealing the show and the series.

October 07, 2022Playoff Preview Cleveland Guardians Hosting the Tampa Bay Rays: Why we Favor the Guardians
The playoffs begin today! The Cleveland Guardians and the Tampa Bay Rays will face off in a case of Cleveland North against Cleveland South. We focus on the hitters, defense, and base running. We find these are two very evenly matched teams but there is one area where Cleveland has a clear advantage. We dive into the numbers trying to see how strong are the Guardians chances.
Next up is a comparison of pitching staffs and pitching matchups now that we feel like we know who the starters should be this weekend. We spend a lot of time on the bullpens due to how good Cleveland’s has been and the lack of depth in the Tampa Bay Rays bullpen.
We end with some general thoughts about things that are important that we feel have not gotten enough chatter. We talk about injuries, lineups, and players who have rested. We end with our predictions for game one and our general predictions for the series in general. We are very focused on the matchup between the Shanes (Shane Bieber and Shane McClanahan due to the fact that each game feels like it will be a harder one for the Guardians due to the pitchers that will be on the mound.

October 06, 202292 Win Season for the Cleveland Guardians! WHY are games at 12:07 What is MLB Thinking!
The Cleveland Guardians end the season with 92 wins with another victory over the Kansas City Royals, a team lined up to pick fifth in the 2023 MLB draft. The Tampa Bay Rays are on deck but we spend some time on this game getting into the three stars Aaron Civale, Jose Ramirez, and Josh Naylor. We also have some fun with odd stats on the year. For instance, this is the first time the Guardians have not had a .300 hitter or a 30 home run hitter since 2013 which was Tito’s first in Cleveland.
We get into a truly frustrating situation with the post-season schedule. Between taking forever to release the times, and then putting the Guardians in a bad ticket-selling spot by putting two games at 12:07. MLB needs to realize having two games at the same time is not competing for air time this early on. People tend to watch their teams and not every single game that is on. It would have been better to have two head-to-head games rather than have the Guardians matched up on ESPN2 due to college football or having a pair of games occurring in the middle of the day one of which happens to fall on a work day.
We end with some previewing of the pitching matchups and bullpen chatter. We finally know who will face who so we get into how we feel about the battle of the Shanes along with Triston vs Glasnow. The hope is the Guardians can win this one in two so that they can save Quantrill for round two. But let’s be honest the hope is they can win this series in general.

October 05, 2022Getting Ready for the Tampa Bay Rays While the Cleveland Guardians get win 91
The Cleveland Guardians win today picking up their 91st of the season and taking it to the Kansas City Royals. We focus in during segment one on the weird way their opponent was decided thanks to a game a catcher won on the mound and what might be the most on-point way to clinch this year which was thanks to the weather. The Cleveland Guardians will face the Tampa Bay Rays. We get into why this might be the best matchup in general. Then we get into the hot topic issue of the day: the fact the playoff games are not sold out and why it is.
Next, we get into the win which was a rather odd affair that saw only two hitters reach base more than once Amed Rosario and Gabriel Arias. Cal Quantrill continues to be a force when he is on the mound in Cleveland. The bullpen wasn't as sharp as always but did enough to get the win. We talk about some of the minor struggles with Clase, Karinchak, and Stephan. Does it feel like the team has taken their foot off the gas a bit?
We end with a discussion of what 14 players will make the postseason in terms of the hitters and what we think the likely way they will be deployed will be. We get into who has performed well and why the specific bench players they seem to have chosen provide certain skills that could make them extra valuable in the postseason. In many respects, the hitters are more straightforward than the pitchers when it comes to the postseason.

October 04, 2022Discussing Postseason Pitching for the Cleveland Guardians. Who is in the Rotation and the Pen?
The Cleveland Guardians drop their game against the Kansas City Royals, but would you rather have the win or rather have an off day for the bullpens central players? I think we can all agree the game not going deep in extra innings makes us all winners. We also take some time to praise Bryan Shaw. While we focused on the roster changes yesterday it is time to talk about one of the top ten relievers in franchise history. A player who is third all-time in appearances and who has been a central part of this teams recent success.
We begin the discussion of the postseason discussing what pitchers we think will make the final roster. The setup of the pitching rotation in the opening series. Who is the ace for the Guardians? Who should be the fourth stater? And what do we know based on Wednesday’s pitching matchup? The focus is primarily on the Guardians starters, and what is likely to happen with Zach Plesac and Aaron Civale in the first two series.
We discuss the postseason pitching a bit more before switching it up to discuss the Tampa Bay Rays postseason rotation. I ask the question: did the Rays mess up their aligned postseason pitching? The Guardians seem likely to miss Drew Rasmussen and Jeffrey Springs, either of whom likely would have been a stronger matchup than Corey Kluber.

October 03, 2022Introducing New Cohost Justin Lada: Bryan Shaw No More! Bo Naylor to the Rescue? Cleveland Guardians
We introduce my new cohost and long-time friend Justin Lada of many, many places to the show. Justin has covered it all and will only help to elevate this podcast to greater heights than ever before. If you listen to this show and don’t follow Justin already you are doing it wrong. We get into the surprise release of Bryan Shaw. While it was absolutely the right move, I don’t think anyone expected Shaw to be let go. We talk about the additions of Will Brennan and Bo Naylor. Will they make the postseason roster? Why were they promoted so late? We also focus on just how good Brennan has been since his promotion. We also get into the team's defense, and how it continues to be one of their greatest strengths. We also ask the important question: is Steven Kwan a Cylon?
The Cleveland Guardians had a massive 40-man issue a year ago, and we thought there might be one this year. Instead, thanks to all the promotions the 40-man is more or less sorted. There are one maybe two more must-adds when the season ends. We talk about some of the players on the bubble, who have excelled this year and who have taken a step back. Hear the case for Tim Herrin, Nic Enright, Joey Cantillo, and others.
We spend some time on the games over the weekend. The Cleveland Guardians won the series against the Kansas City Royals, but we ask was it worth it? Was getting the win worth not giving rest to your pen down the stretch? We also get into the struggles of Trevor Stephan and wonder if he will get the command on his splitter back before the postseason arrives. We also get into why Will Brennan and Bo Naylor might end up making the postseason roster even though technically neither is eligible.

September 30, 2022Cleveland Guardians Beat Tampa Bay Rays in a Potential Postseason Preview!
The Tampa Bay Rays are Cleveland Guardians south. They have nearly double-digit former Cleveland coaches and players on the roster. As a matter of fact, they have acquired the three central players from the Jonathan Lucroy deal. Yu Chang and Francisco Mejia were the big pieces but at the time Shawn Armstrong had pitched in the majors and had an ERA under two with a strikeout per nine over 15. The fourth player was Greg Allen. We revisit this trade since Armstrong picked up the loss and again the major pieces are all in Tampa. We also talk about the Miller deal as maybe the most successful player from both of those trades is JP Feyereisen who is also a pitcher for you guessed it Tampa.
We switched to a game with significant consequences but saw very little happen. Tampa Bay Rays have a magic number of one but lost two of three to Cleveland. I had predicted that Jeffrey Springs would be a hard matchup and he was, but Cal Quantrill was just as good. The Guardians rally late to win thanks to Will Brennan, Steven Kwan, and Oscar Gonzalez. We talk about the choice to walk Jose to face Oscar and why it was an odd choice.
We end with some talk about the weird season flips for Bo Naylor and Bryan Lavastida. Bo is with the team on the taxi squad with a chance to be added before the end of the year. I wonder if Lavastida might be taken off the 40-man, and if they will promote yet another unicorn this year to the roster making rookie number 17. We then talk about how Steven Kwan still can’t seem to get any respect. If one is talking about rookies in baseball and don’t mention him then you are doing it wrong. There are a clear top four hitters and two pitchers and anyone not mentioning Kwan well I question their knowledge.

September 29, 2022Playoff Preview! Cleveland Guardians Win a 2nd Extra-Inning Game Against the Rays. Rubber Match Next
I have run into a group of people on Twitter both fans and writers complaining about the recent talk about the Cleveland Guardians and the stance that no one believed in them. These takes are so tired. Literally, every sports movie ever is about a plucky group of overachievers that surprises everyone and manages to win. If people are going to get upset by this, then I am not sure how they can follow sports at all.
We dug into the game from Monday, an extra-inning loss that saw the Guardians have several players perform well but unfortunately, the bullpen had some issues and Shane Bieber had his worst start in months and the Guardians dropped this one. We also focus in on Jose Ramirez and the tale of two seasons for him since that Colorado series in June. He went from elite to average.
We focus on the win from Wednesday which saw yet another extra-inning affair, this time the Guardian pitching held up and they picked up the win. Gabriel Arias hit his first career home run and it was a no-doubter. Triston McKenzie was fantastic yet again, and the bullpen held the Rays at Bay as the Guardians took the second game of the series. Tyler Glasnow debuts against the Guardians making his first start of the year.

September 28, 2022 Crossover with Sully: Cleveland Guardians Lose to Tampa Rays but Enyel De Los Santos is Immaculate
We have another crossover episode with Sully of Locked on MLB. We talk about the Guardians, the Yankees, and the postseason in general. We talk about the game as it is happening, watching the Guardians lose this one to the Tampa Bay Rays in extra innings. We talk about the immaculate inning of Enyel De Los Santos, and why it is the biggest story in this one. We talk about who the Guardians might play in the postseason. How pitching matchups might line up. We also take some time to talk about the Roger Maris deal that sent him from the Cleveland Indians to the Kansas City Athletics before he settled in New York City. This is a wide ranger that goes long and covers a wide variety of topics.
