Locked On Guardians - Daily Podcast On The Cleveland Guardians episodes

October 21, 2022Five Cleveland Guardians Nominated for Gold Glove Awards: What Does It Really Mean?
A former Cleveland Guardians power hitter is taking over as a manager in Chicago. No, not Jim Thome, it's Richie Sexson. He is taking over for the Windy City Thunderbolts. We talk about the Thome rumors. We talk a little Sexson then take some time to appreciate Hank Peters. While Sexson was a John Hart selection it was during the Peters era that the majority of the great 90s team was built. We get a little nostalgic and talk about some of the other trades from that era.
Next, we spend time on the Gold Glove finalists. The Guardians have five of them and should end up with a few winners. We get into some of the statements that were made today that were just odd. We talk about who should win and why. If you missed the announcement the following players were named as finalists Andres Gimenez, Jose Ramirez, Shane Bieber, Steven Kwan, and Myles Straw.
Last we talked about the catching position, and why it is going to be a much harder position in a year. There are a pair of rules that will lead to more stress on defense at the position. We focus on what the Guardians have, and why it still makes a lot of sense for them to pursue Sean Murphy this offseason. We get into what makes Sean Murphy so special and why we still think he could be a massive improvement. We also get into how they might be able to utilize Sean Murphy and Bo Naylor at the same time by using a player who is currently tearing up the Arizona Fall League.

October 20, 2022 The Aftermath of the 2022 Cleveland Guardians Season: Jose Ramirez's Thumb Injury and Moves Not Made
1. 24 hours later, we discuss how we are feeling about the 2022 Cleveland Guardians season. Have our thoughts changed about the season, how it all unfolded and how it ended. We cover what may lie ahead for the Guardians and how they get better, potential worries and pitfalls ahead, and why we believe the future should be very bright for this young, exciting team.

2. Jose Ramirez is going to have thumb surgery after playing the second half of the season with a torn UCL in his right thumb, which hurt his production. Should he have played through the injury or should he have had the surgery mid-season and missed at least 8 weeks? We discuss that and if the Guardians could have gotten this far without him and the effects of him possibly sitting out. We also say why the injury actually makes us feel better about Ramirez’s injury.

3. There were some not-so-glowing reports about Seattle’s Jesse Winker, a rumored target of the Cleveland Guardians in the offseason via trade with the Cincinnati Reds. We go over the reports on his current status and issues and why it was a bullet dodged that the Guardians ended up not trading for him.

October 19, 2022Cleveland-New York ALDS Game 5 Recap: The end of 2022 but just the beginning for Cleveland Guardians
The Cleveland Guardians lost game five to the New York Yankees. Blame it on the Rain. The matchup ended up heavily favoring the Yankees who were able to use pitchers who might not have been available if not for the extra day. We talk about how the weather hosed the Guardians in multiple forms. If there had been no rainouts then Shane Bieber could have pitched on full rest. If there had been one rainout then New York would not have had Cortes to start, but the combo of the two allowed for the worst possible outcome. Were Major League Baseball, the Yankees, and Weather in collusion against the Guardians? We may never know.
We get into the hitting struggles this postseason. This team not only failed to consistently string together hits and get on base but didn’t work counts or force pitchers out of games early when chances arose. They might have been aggressive to the point it hurt them overall. Game five had two significant opportunities for the Guardians to put some runs on the board and they ended up with just one. This makes one wonder if it really would have mattered at all if Shane Bieber had been given a chance to start.
We end by switching to the positive. We focus on what a fun and unexpected year this was. Some of the positive finds and players who have shown they are a part of this team's future going forward. We went from having two proven bats to start the year to five or six depending on your view. On top of being the youngest team in the league, they also have fantastic minors which means that they have great young players coming and the assets to add any player that could come on the market. Today hurts but know that there is every sign this is just the beginning of the Cleveland Baseball Team’s next great run.

October 18, 2022 Cleveland Guardians-New York Yankees ALDS Game 5 Rainout Reset Preview: Rain or Shane?
1. We discuss the mess that MLB and the networks made with this postseason schedule with this Cleveland Guardians-New York Yankees ALDS Game 5 rainout. Why it's just impacted by money and nothing more and how poor the communication of it all was.

2. We debate the impacts of yet another ALDS rainout between the Yankees and Guardians. Who does the rainout impact more? Who does the rainout benefit? What players are now available to pitch in Game 5 thanks to the extra day off?

3. With the rainout, Shane Bieber may potentially be able to pitch in ALDS Game 5 for the Cleveland Guardians on three days rest. We hash out if the Guardians will use Shane Bieber and if they should use him, and what their pitching plans should be for Game 5 vs. the Yankees pitching plans.

October 17, 2022 Cleveland Guardians- New York Yankees ALDS Game 3 and 4 Recap, Game 5 Preview
1 We recap the wild, thrilling, comeback that was the Cleveland Guardians 6-5 win over the New York Yankees in Game 3 of the ALDS. We talk about how they were able to do it and how Terry Francona outmanaged Aaron Boone in Game 3, and the strange explanation from Boone on his bullpen. Just another unexplainable victory that has been the 2022 Guardians season.

2 We then recap the Game 4 loss in Cleveland, that even though it was disappointing the Guardians couldn’t close out the series at home, why there’s no reason to be down about the loss. We talk about the Guardians approach against Gerrit Cole in a big performance by Cole and the Guardians finding a little victory turning to the unused arms in their bullpen while still having a chance to win.

3 And finally, we look to Game 5 and why both Jeff and Justin feel like Cleveland has a good chance to win the game. We get into the matchup of Jameson Taillon and Aaron Civale, the bullpen situation and why it favors Cleveland. Someone guarantees a victory, but you’ll have to listen to who predicts it and the win for who.

October 15, 2022 The Cleveland Guardians Gritty, Dirty, Disgusting Game 2 ALDS WIn
1. The Cleveland Guardians offense finally came through with a clutch hit from Andres Gimenez with runners on, a big homer by Amed Rosario, which we sort of predicted, and the usual gritty, dirty, what some call disgusting hustle by Jose Ramirez that created the winning runs in the 10th inning, along with a huge hit from Josh Naylor. Cleveland finally got into the Yankee bullpen by forcing Nestor Cortes out early.
2. The Guardians bullpen once again showed its edge over the New York Yankees and Aaron Boone made some odd pitching decisions while the Guardians bullpen dominated led by Trevor Stephan and gusty performance by Emmanuel Clase. Shane Bieber allowed an early homer but was pretty darn good after.
3. What does using Emmanuel Clase for 7 outs and 33 pitches mean for Game 3 for the Guardians and why they may have a slight edge in Game and why they need to win it.

October 14, 2022We Aren't Rained Out: Cleveland Guardians ALDS Postseason Rainy Day Mailbag
It feels appropriate that the Cleveland Guardians have at least one postseason game rained out after a year of more rainouts than I have seen in my years as a fan. We get into the talk that came out today about the compressed schedule. We get into why most think it will benefit the Cleveland Guardians, but in what ways it also hurts them. The New York Yankees also have their own set of issues that this rain delay will bring up due to their pitching depth issues.
We spend some more time on the matchup and get into our different views on which team has the advantage tomorrow. We also get into why each of us have different feelings on how much tomorrow’s game is a crux for the whole series. This matchup should be incredibly close and the hope is that Cleveland can finally find a way much as they did against the Tampa Bay Rays. The Guardians have gone from an 18 percent strikeout rate the lowest in all of baseball to a rate over 30% which would have been the highest by nearly five percent in the regular season.
We end with a mailbag and while I wanted to focus on the postseason the listeners were focused on the offseason. We talk about the matchup a little between the Aces. We get into who should be considered for extensions. Who would be ideal trade targets and which minor league shortstop do we think has the brightest future?

October 13, 2022Previewing Cleveland Guardians-New York Yankees ALDS Game 2
It is 24 hours later, which makes it the perfect time now that we have rested and refreshed to talk about game one and our final thoughts and feelings on the loss for the Cleveland Guardians against the New York Yankees in round one of the ALDS. We focus on the lack of offense in the early going and what is potentially holding this team back. While they advanced in a sweep let’s be honest the offense has been largely missing this postseason.
In honor of Nestor Cortes, I have some fun with Justin. Nestor Cortes is on his third time with the Yankees and is already the third-best 36th-round pick in MLB history. Can you figure out who the top two are? Can Justin? We also talk about the Guardians own top 36th-rounder. Along with the high number of former Cleveland players taken in the round who didn’t sign. We focus on what has changed for Cortes to take him from journeyman to Ace.
As it looks more and more likely that the Thursday game could be rained out. We debate if a rainout helps or hurts the Guardians. We get into starters, bullpen, and lineups. We then deep dive on Nestor Cortes some more trying to find out how a guy whose most similar 2022 pitcher by velocity and pitch movement is Kirk McCarty is someone a potential Cy Young Candidate. We talk lineups and wonder if there will be any changes for the typical left-handed lineup that we saw through out the year.

October 12, 2022 Cleveland Guardians-New York Yankees 2022 ALDS Game 1 Reaction: Live
We join the game live in the ninth inning. It has been a frustrating affair for the team due to four big moments that we talked about. Cal Quantrill was left in for the sixth, getting nothing when they had the bases loaded with one out, the Amed Rosario double play, and the Oscar Gonzalez error. We get into why the defense was aligned the way it was. The issues with the lineup construction, and the little errors that held the Guardians back as they dropped game one to the New York Yankees in the ALDS. We spend some time on the highlights, specifically Jose Ramirez and Steven Kwan. We also preview a scary matchup in game two against the haunting Nestor Cortes. It was a very hard loss, but we are hoping for the Guardians to rebound in game two and maybe score a run other than a homerun. Join Justin and Jeff as they vent after a tough loss on a generally weird day for baseball across the Majors.

October 11, 2022Crossover with Stacey Gotsulias of Locked On Yankees Previewing Cleveland Guardians and New York Yankees ALDS
The Cleveland Guardians and New York Yankees face off in the 2022 ALDS. On this crossover edition of Locked on Guardians, Jeff Ellis and Justin Lada are joined by Stacey Gotsulias of Locked on Yankees to discuss the upcoming matchup.
We discuss the Yankees and Guardians pitching and which pitchers are the toughest matchup for each side. Why the Yankees are using Gerritt Cole as the Game 1 (and potential Game 4) starter and not left hander Nestor Cortes.
The Yankees have an injured and beleaguered bullpen. Stacey shares which relievers are healthy, which are not healthy, and which relievers they trust against the Guardians heading into the ALDS. We also discuss the overall health of the Yankees lineup and who will be on the active roster for them.
Which hitters for the Guardians are going to need to play a key role in order for Cleveland to win the series and what they need to do to beat Gerritt Cole, and what is is the best case scenario for Cleveland to pull off a series upset.
