Locked On Guardians - Daily Podcast On The Cleveland Guardians episodes

August 29, 2022Cleveland Guardians Offense Sinks Against the Seattle Mariners: American League Central Lead Shrinks
We start the podcast with a focus on the Guardians losing three of four to the Mariners. We dig into stats and talk about Owen Miller. Miller in April and March was one of the best hitters on the team. Since then he has struggled with his bat and depending on the stats his glove. We talk about reverse splits and why it is that Miller is part of the team's continued struggles against left handers. We also can’t help but focus on the success Franmil Reyes has found in Chicago as he is exactly what this team needs right now.
We talk about the overall frustration of the loss on Friday night. It was a game where the Guardians left the winning run on third three innings in a row. They often left the runner there with more than one out. This game was one that felt like they were going to lose, as the offense just could not get it going consistently.
We end by looking at the Sunday loss where the offense was offensive and the Saturday win which saw them pick up one win in this series. The truth is the offense was really unproductive and things do not get easier with the Baltimore Orioles on deck and the Seattle Mariners in the hole as the Cleveland Guardians hold onto a narrow lead in the division. They are up just two games over the Minnesota Twins and the division still stands their best path to the playoffs.

August 26, 2022CLEVELAND GUARDIANS FALL TO THE SEATTLE MARINERS: IT WAS ALL OVER AFTER THE FIRST INNING
We joined this game in the seventh. The first inning saw both teams score but the next five innings saw each time collect one hit and walk. We talk about the game and what has transpired while also focusing on why this was another great Triston McKenzie start in spite of what looked like an impending loss. He gave up a hit, walk, and a home run but then settled in and retired 18 batters while only allowing two base runners.
We dig into the numbers of the box score, while also following the Guardians best chance to get even in the 8th. We also discuss the recent MLB rankings of the top minor leagues in baseball which ranked the Guardians as the third best in baseball. I explain my own thoughts on the Guardians minors. I do a rerank of the top 15 and explain how the tiers are the same which is what really matters more so than who is the top player in tier one. If you missed it before, there is a clear tier one with Daniel Espino, Bryan Rocchio, and Gavin Williams. After that comes George Valera, Bo Naylor, and Tanner Bibee. After that initial six is the bigger drop off to the next tier which is about eight players deep.
We continue to follow the game in progress and focus on the fact that even if the Guardians lose, (They do) and the Twins and White Sox win (They didn’t). The Guardians lead right now in the division is so big it would take a weekend's worth of losses for them to even end up sharing first. We talk a little more about prospects including why I have cooled a little on Will Brennan and why Petey Halpin might be the next name to know about the Guardians outfielders.

August 25, 2022Cleveland Guardians Take a 4 Game Lead in the American League Central! Cal Quantrill and JRAM Lead
The Cleveland Guardians keep winning and the Minnesota Twins keep losing so the guardians keep building up a bigger and bigger lead in the division. They are now up to a four-game lead in the central division. We also spend some time on Cal Quantrill who has now gone six or more innings without giving up a run in three of his last four starts. We also ask the question is for sure the number three starter on this team if they make the postseason. I mean when they make the postseason.
We dig into the Cleveland Guardians stellar game against the San Diego Padres. Jose Ramirez goes yard twice. Oscar Gonzalez also had his fifth home run of the year. Heck, even Myles Straw managed two hits as the Guardians beat the Padres 7-0. We talk about how the Guardians protected 12 prospects last offseason, and Gonzalez was not one of them. I explain why I am not completely sold on Oscar Gonzalez and take us back to the early 2000s and Karim Garcia. I also explain why it would be foolish to bet against him.
We preview the Seattle Mariners, a team with roughly the same record as the Cleveland Guardians. We all make jokes about the number of trades Jerry Dipoto has made, but at the same time, it is thanks to former Guardians pitcher Jerry Dipoto that the Mariners are contenders thanks to strong drafts and savvy deals.

August 24, 2022Forgive Me Padre the Cleveland Guardians whip the San Diego Padres: Expand the Lead in the Central
The Cleveland Guardians are beating the San Diego Padres in the seventh inning as we begin broadcasting. It has been a very close contest so far with the Guardians holding onto a 2-1 lead. Andres Gimenez continues to dazzle both with his bat and glove. He has been the team's MVP this year. Oscar Gonzalez has also gone deep in this one for the Guardians who are winning in spite of two hits thanks to them both being home runs.
We get into the box score and talk about how the numbers tell us the Guardians should be losing, but they are not. The reason is the difference in strikeouts which is why the Guardians are able to extend innings and the Padres are not. We also get into some talk of BABIP luck and how it showed its head in the eighth inning. We also do a late preview of the series, trying to figure out how it is that these two very different teams are on equal ground.
We end with some thoughts back to the Jose Ramirez trade that nearly happened. I talk about some of the rumored names and look at the Juan Soto deal as it had a lot of similar framework pieces to what the rumored Jose Ramirez deal I believe would have looked like involving MacKenzie Gore, CJ Abrams, Robert Hassell, and Jake Cronenworth. We talk about who might have been in the deal and who was not. We also discuss the game ending and the Guardian's lead growing in the American League Central as the Chicago White Sox and the Minnesota Twins both lost.

August 23, 2022Cleveland Guardians Have an Off Day: Locked on Guardians Do Not. Talking Prospects, Slumps, and More
The Guardians have an off day, but the Twins lost so the lead is now up to two in the division. The focus for the show is first on some prospects in the minors that have stood out of late due to fantastic pitching performances. We take some time to talk about Gavin Williams who recently had a six-inning no-hit performance and Cody Morris who you will see in the majors this year. Morris is striking out nearly 18 per nine right now. The only question with Morris is health, but there is no doubt he has major-league stuff.
We talk about some other standout pitchers in terms of players of the week in the minors. We discuss the emergence of Mason Hickman as a reliever extraordinaire. The former starter has found a new life as a reliever this season. We also discuss an interesting quote on Will Benson that makes me wonder if he is viewed as a central part of this team or more of a depth piece moving forward.
We discuss what changed for Franmil Reyes since he left Cleveland, and why it is that he has gained success so quickly in a new setting. We also dig into multiple things that stand out as to why it is that Myles Straw has had a historically bad season for the Guardians. There are multiple factors, and the historical data shows that he has been a much different hitter than he had been during his career before this year. We also wonder if a Freaky Friday situation might have occurred when it comes to the top of the Guardian’s lineup.

August 22, 2022Weather Issues! Split Series between Cleveland Guardians Chicago White Sox. Central Lead Increases!
The Guardians and the White Sox split the weekend series. If you weren’t paying attention this ended up being just a two-game series as the field conditions were so bad on Sunday that they played no game. One can view it as yet another canceled game in what has been a long series of weather issues this year or maybe a win that the Guardians gained a game on the Twins and didn’t have to face Dylan Cease. We focus on the weird affair from Saturday first.
Next up we talk about the Friday win which saw Triston McKenzie dominate and the offense starred multiple contributors to ensure the guardians were able to keep up their lead in the central. We also talk about the demotion of Nolan Jones and why it is the right call. Before digging into why Richie Palacios is not getting the respect he deserves. He is a better prospect than he gets credit for and continues to mash.
We end by discussing a series of prospects released over the last week. We discuss how the players were added, to begin with, and why it is they are being let go now. The biggest name of the group is former second-rounder Quentin Holmes but it was Brian Eichhorn that I found to be the most surprising player they let go.

August 18, 2022Cleveland Guardians just Don't Quit: Salvage a big win Against the Detroit Tigers
1. Things looked very dark as it appeared the Guardians would drop three in a row to the Detroit Tigers who are currently battling for the top pick and Dylan Crews in next year's draft. Then the offense woke up in a big way with the five runs in the eighth inning which led to a big comeback win after they recorded three outs in the eighth. Luckily the third out was a wild pitch where Luke Maile took first and then after five hits and a walk the Guardians won and got a one-game lead in the division.

2. We dive into the details of the game handing out the three stars of the game along with getting deep into the box score. The Guardians pulled out an unbelievable win to remain first when it appeared they had lost this one. The division lead is always important but more so with a huge weekend series against the Chicago White Sox on deck.

3. We end up talking about those very same Chicago White Sox. They are a team that is struggling with health which is part of the reason the Guardians should have a lineup and bullpen advantage in this one. They also have a slight pitcher advantage as well due to Triston McKenzie and Shane Bieber being set to pitch in this one. We go position by position explaining why the Guardians should be able to take two out of three from the White Sox.

August 17, 2022Umpires are Awful But the Guardians Also Weren't Good in a Loss to the Lowly Tigers. Bunts Stink!
I know people expect me to be very mad about umpiring, but let’s be honest from the start. Austin Hedges was blocking the bag by the letter of the law. It is a dumb rule, inconsistently called and enforced but he did error. The call on Straw was the right one as well, leaving him in to hit was the wrong call. Straw is the second worst hitter in baseball this year among all qualified hitters. The bench might be full of lefties but just about anyone would have been better, and I state that as the number one Myles Straw supporter out there. Also, bunting is the worst, and bunting in that situation lowered the Guardian's chances of winning. The umpires made bad calls, but frankly, the Guardians did not play well today at all.
The Tigers are a bottom three team in every offensive category. Yet they have looked like the 90s Indians/Guardians over the last few days. The pitching just has not been getting it done facing a bad team. Also, Steven Kwan is a star.
I read the angry quote by Austin Hedges that occurred after the game. I appreciate his fire and support of his teammates. I break it down. Plus the Guardians have one of the ten best hitters in baseball this year and it's not who most would think. Also, can you name the best former Guardians hitter in the big leagues this year? We talk about the one trade over the past few years that is rare, safe to call loss by the Guardians.

August 16, 2022Another Split Double Header: Andres Gimenez is a STAR! Eli Morgan and Bryan Shaw get missed Used!
I am cranky so we start this one off with a rant about bullpen usage. Eli Morgan has a nearly three-run differential between his FIP, fielding independent ERA, vs lefties and righties. He has been largely ineffective against lefties due to his slider just not being an effective pitch. Sending him out to face a series of lefties is nearly as bad as asking Bryan Shaw to give you two innings. Yes, he ran into bad luck, but he also was unable to record a single out when asked to go for two innings. He has been ineffective when asked to go two.
In segment two we switch the focus to the whole games played today which saw the best start of the year for Aaron Civale, Xazvion Curry with a solid debut, and Andres Gimenez continues to show he belongs in any discussion about the best infielders in baseball. We also take some time to continue with some Steven Kwan appreciation.
We end with the worst quote of the week, thanks to a former Guardian. Some stats stand out as they pertain to the Guardians. And a classy move by Franmil that Cleveland did not match on his way out. We also dug in and cleared out the mailbag from last week.
