Locked On Guardians - Daily Podcast On The Cleveland Guardians episodes

August 15, 2022Cleveland Guardians Go North and Make Toronto Blue. Maybe It is Time to Embrace this FUN TEAM!
The Cleveland Guardians take two of three from the Toronto Blue Jays. They were excellent all weekend thanks first and foremost to a pitching staff that saw both the starts and bullpen combine to stifle one of the best offenses in baseball. We focus on Friday and Saturday in segment one. Friday was a fun effort that saw Cal Quantrill have his best start of the year and Jose Ramirez show that I am batting a thousand this year when it comes to reverse jinxes.
Next up is a focus on the win from Sunday which saw Shane Bieber with a velocity increase and another strong performance by one of the ten best pitchers in baseball this year. The pitching staff gave up just four runs all weekend while the offense scored 16. We also talk about the impending promotion of Xzavion Curry. Curry along with the previously promoted Hunter Gaddis are top 20 prospects who have earned the chance to pitch and either as a starter or a reliever have a good chance of helping the Guardians for years to come.
We dig into my favorite topic: the Rule 5 situation for the Guardians. With the promotions of Gaddis and Curry, things are a lot clearer. We talk about three must-adds and then take this chance to discuss two of the biggest helium prospects in the system this year: Micah Pries and Johnathan Rodriquez. We focus on the few names left that could come off the roster and the many fun players who are in contention to be added. The depth in the Guardians system is unreal. While the pitching development has been lauded for years, one has to wonder if all of a sudden the hitting development in the system is maybe even better.

August 12, 2022Cleveland Guardians Win in Extra Innings! Five Game Win Streak! Fifth Best Record in the AL!
The Guardians have won five in a row and have the fifth-best record in the American League. They were a team I was told would struggle to finish third in the division and are now 1.5 games on the Twins. We talk about the overtime win against the Tigers. Shaw continues the tradition of me talking about a player's struggles only to see them excel the next day. A lot of offensive performers stepped up for Cleveland who came back to grab the win today after a blown save. This team never quits.
We talk about what has happened to Jose Ramirez. Since the infamous thumb injury Jose has turned into a slightly below-league-average hitter over the last two months. I get into what stands out about his performances in terms of changes. We talk about how all the players have performed in general since that series, but the focus is on Jose and some theories on what has gone wrong.
We end with a preview of the Toronto Blue Jays. They are an outstanding team with two glaring weaknesses that they will need to work on this offseason. Toronto is the stronger team on paper, but Cleveland has a chance to win multiple games this weekend. I also discuss why the Blue Jays and Guardians should consider trading with each other this offseason. Then I sneak in a few questions from the mailbag to end the show.

August 12, 2022Cleveland Guardian Fourth Win in a Row: Grabbing Victory From the Jawas of Defeat
We start out discussing a game the Cleveland Guardians could have easily lost to the Detroit Tigers. Even with multiple times, they could have easily lost they ended up pulling out the close win. We discuss a game that was nearly lost but instead they were able to scavenge up a win.
We talk about the game a little more as well as talking about Steven Kwan’s chances at the rookie of the year. While most of the focus has always been on first and first alone, I explain why it might be best to root for him to finish third in the rookie of the year race if you are a Guardians fan.
We talk about Peyton Battenfield who will be joining the Guardians in Toronto. I thought he would have made his debut already, but we get into what has gone wrong since the Guardians acquired him for Jordan Luplow. We also discuss why they decided to add him over one of the relievers in the minors. We also discuss the incoming addition of Cody Morris to the 40-man roster and why he should see his way on Cleveland’s roster sooner rather than later.

August 10, 2022Cleveland Guardians are in FIRST place in August Like WE ALL EXPECTED! They also Beat the Tigers!
The Cleveland Guardians beat the Detroit Tigers and are now in first place in August just like everyone expected. We talk about the game, which featured another stellar start by Shane Bieber and Amed Rosario continued to murder baseball for the Guardians. We also talk about the new bit of information that only one player won’t be able to head to Toronto for this weekend's games and what that could mean. We also get into what might occur to allow for the addition of Aaron Civale to start in tomorrow’s matchup.
Next, we dig into who could replace James Karinchak for the trip to Toronto by digging into top AAA performers. The two names that stand out for me right now are Nic Enright and Cody Morris and I explain why both of them could join the team. I then try and get into what has gone so wrong for Eli Morgan.
We end with a discussion about a stellar pitching performance in AAA. Xzavion Curry had a no-hitter into the sixth inning and ended up having allowed just six base runners through six innings. He was then one-upped by Cody Morris who struck out seven of the ten batters he faced allowing just one walk. I also spend some time on why I don’t get the point of calling up Nolan Jones, Will Benson, and Tyler Freeman to let them ride the bench.

August 09, 2022Guardians Top 20 Prospects: Top Five MLB Minor League System is LOADED With Talent and Most Near
The Franmil Reyes situation is finally resolved as the Cubs have claimed him. It is interesting to see an organization that connected with the Guardians claim him. We get into why the Cubs claimed him. We also discuss my 2022 Shadow Draft in which I have to make significant changes to save some money to draft Cam Collier with the top pick in my shadow draft.
We talked about some prospect lists. I talk about the MLB list which now has NINE prospects in the top 100 which is something that I have never seen before. The Guardians are loaded with so many prospects but it is interesting to see the difference in ranks across various professionals. I recommend Mason Mcrae who is a great Twitter follow. I also explain who the top prospects in this organization are.
I continue to talk about the top prospects in the Guardians system going through the top 20 players as I see them in the system. We discuss the tiers, the underrated names, and who stands out. We also preview the Tigers at the end but the CliffsNotes are you have to beat one of the bottom five teams when you are trying to make the playoffs.

August 08, 2022Cleveland Guardians Split Series with Houston Astros: Franmil Reyes Cut? Triston McKenzie is Amazing
It was a very busy weekend for the Cleveland Guardians who split the four-game series with the Houston Astros despite not having one of their best starters set up to go. I was told all week this team could not compete with the Astros but in the end, they did. We talk about the brilliance of Emmanuel Clase. The utter dominance of Triston McKenzie. We also discussed Hunter Gaddis, the 13th Guardian to make their debut this year, and the pitcher I hoped would get the call on Friday. I explain why I think he is a future 10-year player in the majors.
We quickly talk about the three games of the week before focusing on Sunday and the performances there. Triston McKenzie after his struggles in June has elevated into a legit front-line starter. Was I the only one that was sad that Steven Kwan got pinch hit and saw his streak end on Friday? We also talk about why Jake Jewell was added to the roster and why he is likely to have a very short stay on the 40-man.
We end by first discussing where the standings have the Guardians both in the division and the Wild Card. The Guardians still have a better chance at the division than the Wild Card. Then of course we get into Franmil Reyes. We talk about what has occurred over the last three years which might have made the organization decide to move on from what this team needs: a power hitter from the right side with multiple years of control. This was not a result of just one bad year, this team loves to buy low on players so there is more going on. We try to explain why this shocker occurred, what it means, and why it was likely best for everyone.

August 05, 2022Most Under Rated Pitching Prospects In the Cleveland Guardians System: Verlander Stymies Guardians
The Cleveland Guardians got utterly dominated by Justin Verlander and the Houston Astros. There were some positives with Austin Hedges continuing to be surprisingly effective since the All-Star break. Steven Kwan continued to collect hits with his hitting streak hitting 16 games breaking his tie with Michael Brantley for the longest streak still a bit away from Benito Santiago's rookie record of 34 games.
We discuss some things that annoy me with prospect evaluations regarding wording and expectations. We also get into what the hardest to develop/biggest bust rate is of any position in all of baseball.
We dive into the underrated prospects in this system. Tanner Bibee is a name everyone should know, and the gap between him and Gavin Williams is smaller than between him and Logan Allen. We also talk about Nic Enright who might be the top reliever in the minors. Jack Leftwich has some of the best numbers in the system. Davis Sharpe, another recent draft pick who is finding a lot of success in the Guardians system. As well as Cade Smith the former undrafted pitcher has the highest strikeout per nine in the Guardians system. The last pitcher we focus on is Joey Cantillo who might be the fifth best starting pitching prospect in the Guardians organization and one who likely is only still part of the organization due to there being no Rule 5 draft.

August 04, 2022Tyler Freeman Makes His Debut: Cleveland Guardians Win Series Against Arizona Diamondbacks
The Guardians faced a rookie lefty and came out on top against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Shane Bieber was against excellent, most of the bullpen was stellar, and offensively there were several top performers. The Guardians remain a game out of first with the win and a tough four-game set against the Astros coming up.
We focus on the promotion of Tyler Freeman, and why I think he is the ideal guy to take over as the top bench bat. Freeman could be a starter but in the bench role he could end up excelling in the super sub role that I have envisioned a few players taking on over the years.
We talk about the big-name prospects all the time on the show instead we focus on the guys who have not generated much talk or any mention on the podcast this year. Get to know the younger brother of one of the most exciting young hitters in baseball, a catcher that no one has any information about, and an outfielder who leads the entire organization in slugging percentage even though most would think the answer is Will Benson or Jhonkensy Noel.

August 03, 2022Trade Deadline Inaction is Inexcusable: Plus Cleveland Guardians Fall to Gallen and the Diamondbacks
The Deadline has come and gone, and the Guardians managed to make a trade but one that is unlikely to help them this year or garner much love from the fans. I explain why I thought a trade was necessary and why the window should be viewed now. We do discuss the minor trade that occurred, why they helped the team they are chasing, and my own thoughts on Ian Hamilton going back six years.
We get into the Guardians' loss to the Diamondbacks. It was a weird game with a weird lineup that saw two of the Guardians' young left-handed bats not used in favor of a part of righties while facing one of the best young right-handers in baseball. You know it was a weird game when Luke Maile and Nick Sandlin are two of the three stars.
We talk about the 40-man, since there was no trade there are five to eight players that could be viewed as potential cuts but really only about five players who seem likely to be let go. The Guardians have seven players they strongly need to consider adding. It is going to be a similar story to a year ago. I also explain why it is that trading prospects can be harder in the offseason than at the deadline.

August 02, 2022Trade Deadline: Guardians Walk Off Win vs Diamondbacks, Things Are About to Get Interesting
We are going live to discuss an extra-inning game as it occurs as well as the general craziness of the deadline so far. I talk about some of the trades that have occurred and why I think so of the overall comments out there don’t quite match up with league views. It has been a busy deadline and there are still another 18 hours or so to go.
Next, we discuss the game as it is occurring. The Guardians are struggling to beat a bad Diamondbacks team. They keep falling behind but keep coming back, we discuss the game as it is happening. One has to love the Guardians' fight, and there was a chance for the Guardians to move into first with a win and a Twins loss.
There is a lot of debate about the Guardians' biggest need. We have talked Wilson Contreras and Sean Murphy to death. Neither was the first catcher traded; instead it was Christian Vazquez to the Astros. I bring up a third name to consider at catcher Omar Narvaez and explain why he could be a cheaper target, whose skills match up with the Guardians' needs. We also discuss some relievers that could help the Guardians as the deadline nears.
