Locked On Guardians - Daily Podcast On The Cleveland Guardians episodes

August 02, 2022Trade Deadline: Guardians Walk Off Win vs Diamondbacks, Things Are About to Get Interesting
We are going live to discuss an extra-inning game as it occurs as well as the general craziness of the deadline so far. I talk about some of the trades that have occurred and why I think so of the overall comments out there don’t quite match up with league views. It has been a busy deadline and there are still another 18 hours or so to go.
Next, we discuss the game as it is occurring. The Guardians are struggling to beat a bad Diamondbacks team. They keep falling behind but keep coming back, we discuss the game as it is happening. One has to love the Guardians' fight, and there was a chance for the Guardians to move into first with a win and a Twins loss.
There is a lot of debate about the Guardians' biggest need. We have talked Wilson Contreras and Sean Murphy to death. Neither was the first catcher traded; instead it was Christian Vazquez to the Astros. I bring up a third name to consider at catcher Omar Narvaez and explain why he could be a cheaper target, whose skills match up with the Guardians' needs. We also discuss some relievers that could help the Guardians as the deadline nears.

August 01, 2022Trade Deadline Will the Guardians Buy, Sell, Both? What I Think and What I am Hearing
I am back and there is so much to talk about. The Guardians continue to stick around in the race, instead of going over all of the games that occurred when I was traveling. Instead, I focus on Sunday’s win which might be the most unlikely victory all year. They faced a top lefty, there were multiple players out, Bryan Shaw was starting and yet they beat a potential Cy Young, Award Winner, and are now just a game back of the Twins, and are now just a game back of the Twins.
We dig into the numbers trying to figure out exactly what has changed for Franmil Reyes. He has been one of the Guardian's top hitters the last few years. The data paints a picture of what has changed in his approach and overall effectiveness. What can the Guardians do? Does one consider some time in the minors or not?
We discuss what might happen with Franmil Reyes and Amed Rosario at the deadline. We discuss why it is both likely and unlikely that either player is traded before settling on an answer. We also explain why it is that I am all in on a Sean Murphy deal. We talk about the draft the Guardians were just 510 dollars from losing a first-rounder next year. But this one is mostly about the deadline.

July 22, 20225 Trade Targets to Consider: Inside Information on the Guardians 2022 MLB Draft Selections
We start out with more Draft talk. I watched all three days of press conferences and pass on all of the most interesting bits of information from Scouting Director Scott Barnsby. While most of the information on the early picks was known there were some good nuggets about the players a bit further down the board.
Next, we talk about the last four players in this class that we have yet to focus on Angel Zarate, Zach Jacobs, Geo Rivera Jr., and Shawn Rapp. We get into a pair of UNC players, a small school player who dealt with injuries, and a flame thrower from the JUCO ranks.
The trade deadline approaches and while all the chatter in baseball is about Juan Soto we dig into four outfielders that stand out in terms of the Guardians. We dig into the common names Ian Happ, Anthony Santander, and Ramon Laureano, or at least the common names mentioned on Locked on Guardians before focusing on maybe the most logical candidate Connor Joe. I don’t get into all he has had to overcome in terms of beating Cancer, and being traded several times. We just focus on how effective he has been and why he would be an ideal addition. He has been one of the premier contact hitters in baseball and has one of the best eyes of the strike zone. His positional flexibility, a right-handed bat, and five plus years of control would be a nice addition to the roster. We also discuss how the deal could have been expanded to include an interesting relief arm or two that would benefit from a change of scenery including a former Ohio State Buckeye and Walsh High School player Ryan Feltner.

July 21, 2022Fixing the All-Star and More Post Draft Chatter
It was the lowest-rated All-Star game ever! There were questions about what had gone wrong. I explain why the numbers get smaller and smaller all the time. While also giving some ideas to make it interesting or grab more headlines. The NBA and NHL stand out for having evolved their All-Star games and adding new components to make people tune in. It is time the MLB does the same.
We talk about some of the outside views on the draft class. Some of the players from this class are already being reported to sign. We talk about how the pool money is shaping up early on. Then we talk about some of the day's three picks. Magnus Ellerts who had been pitching in the Cape. Jack Jasiack who hasn’t pitched since March due to injury.
Next up on the draft deep dive is a pair of players with high speed, good contact rates, and rarely strikeout. You might have heard this story before as it was a big focus in this year's draft. Pres Cavenaugh and Tyresse Turner are the latest up-the-middle additions with that skill set. Adam Tulloch is a lefty who missed a ton of bats but struggled with his command. Lastly, we focus on Logun Clark the California catcher who goes against the Guardian's typical type grabbing the already 19-year-old catcher. Clark has power potential, good pop times, and, of course, can frame pitches.

July 20, 20222022 MLB Draft is Done Cleveland Guardians add 21 Players: Focused on Day Two and Three
The 2022 MLB Draft is in the books all three days and 20 rounds. The Guardians have added 21 new players all likely to sign and join their minor league development system which is the lifeblood of this baseball team. We re-rack the draft talking about what the class has looked like and the overall trends. Pitchers with high strikeout rates, low walk rates, and home run rates over one. Batters who have speed and excellent contact data. We talk about Dylan Delucia as well, one of the day two players we had not mentioned who was the most outstanding player of the College World Series.
We go over the 10 picks of the day quickly, a group that was college dominated. There was just one prep player and one JUCO player the rest were from the college ranks including Tyresse Turner who might be my favorite day three pick. I think Logun Clark will be most fans' favorite day three pick as the prep catcher has good pop times and also pop in his bat.
We end by focusing on the three, day two players that we have yet to talk about. The pair of 17-year-old prep pitchers Jacob Zibin and Jordan Humpries stand out in terms of rankings and upside. We talk about why the Guardians made sure to save pool money for these two arms. We also talk about Austin Peterson who was one of the best pitchers all year in the NCAA. He ended up with the third most strikeouts while rarely walking anyone throughout the season.

July 19, 2022MLB Draft 2022: Day Two Done Rounds 3 to 10: Plus All Ohio Drafted Players
Day Two is now in the books, I reminisce about what it was like when I had to cover 50 rounds instead of just 20. I explain how I called my shot and predicted Brock Porter to the Rangers, the highest-rated player on every board. I also get into the handful of players drafted from Ohio. The first Ohio college player actually was from Notre Dame College near Cleveland with Ben Ross going to the Twins. We also had players drafted from Ohio State, Toledo, Youngstown State, and Miami University as well as indirectly players from Kent State and Ohio University.
Next, we focus on the eight players the Guardians drafted and discuss why it is that even though they have grabbed some really interesting players none of them crack the Guardian's top ten prospects for me. There is a chance that it might happen at the end of the year if a few players graduate but not yet. I give a snapshot of the Guardians Day two talking about all of the players.
We focus on the first pick of the day Joe Lampe, who strikes me more likely as a fourth outfielder. Then I switch to focus on the three players who went against type for them. Guy Limpscomb Jr. and Nate Furman were a pair of draft-eligible sophomores who are undersized but showed plus speed, plus contact skills, and strong walk rates. Javier Santos is a 19-year-old high school pitcher from the same program as Daniel Espino. I end with the five best draft names so far, based on discussions on Twitter during the draft. Are they risky to say when it's a person's name?

July 18, 20222022 MLB Draft Day One in the Books: How did the Guardians do?
The first day of the 2022 MLB Draft is done and after 80 picks and multiple hours. The Guardians have added three more college players to their system. We focus on what ended up being a shocking first-round Jackson Holiday at one. Kumar Rocker at three! Three college pitchers in the top ten after many thinking there would not be even one.
We focus on the top pick Chase DeLauter. A year ago at this time, people were watching him dominate the Cape. He looked like a potential top-five overall pick due to his performance with wood bats and his physical tools. There are reasons why people look at him and talk about Bradley Zimmer, but I explain why those aren’t true. In a nutshell, the cape performance along with physical tools and a better approach should make him a better player with a legit chance he ends up being a five-tool talent.
Next up is Justin Campbell, who I successfully mocked to the Guardians. He is a big pitcher but doesn't pitch like one. His combination of command, control, flyball rate, and fastball spin made him a potential candidate at 16, when he was still there at 37 it made him a no doubt pick for the Guardians. Parker Messick made Chase DeLauter look so bad in February that it still affected people's views on him all these months later. He is an undersized lefty with stellar command and control. If the Guardians can help him add some velocity he should profile as another potential starting pitcher for the Guardians. Plus the system lacks left-handed pitchers in general which Messick helps alleviate.

It is MLB Draft Day 2022, and we have you covered. Here is an in-depth mock on picks 1-22. I get into what I have heard, what Vegas is saying, and what makes the most sense based on rumors and draft history for each team with those top 22 picks. I am focused on what Vegas is showing us right now as we all learned from the NBA draft that Vegas tends to know before anyone when it comes to anything. The fact they moved the line on Brooks Lee, makes me think he is the favorite to be the top selection for a complete list of picks check out my blog. Below or go to mlbdraftnow.blogspot.com
