Locked On Guardians - Daily Podcast On The Cleveland Guardians episodes

July 15, 2022Triston McKenzie was McKilling it as the Guardians Finally Beat the Detroit Tigers
The Cleveland Guardians are back to .500 after a fantastic win today. The offense was productive but the big story and our first focus is on the fantastic performance of Triston McKenzie. We focus on his exceptional performance. We also get into some roster moves that were made due to Aaron Civale’s injury along with the return of Kirk McCarty. We also get into the issues with the Guardians starting pitching depth in general.
We dig deeper into the win for the Guardians. The Detroit Tigers are very bad with three hitters hitting below .200 and just two batters with OPS over .700. Their top hitter this year is former Guardians Eric Haase. We talk about how nice he would look in the backup catcher role and why it stinks he got away. We also give away our three stars for this game Triston McKenzie, Andres Gimenez, and Amed Rosario.
We look at top-performing pitching prospects this year. Logan Allen might have had some issues in AAA but he has 21 more strikeouts than the next nearest pitcher in the minors. We dig into who have been the top performers and notice that the top names on the strikeout lists are all prospects that are pitchers of note. We also look into the recent minor league transactions and why there has been so much movement involving Lake County. Then we talk a bit more about Bryan Shaw and why he should be nearing the end of his time in Cleveland.

July 14, 2022Cleveland Guardians Lose the Game and Maybe a Starter As Well
The Cleveland Guardians lost another game and maybe lost a starter as well. We focus on what options they could have in terms of starters despite all the great prospects the starter depth near the majors is limited. We also talk about the Guardians losing today’s game as I am recording as the ninth inning starts. While it is likely Konnor Pilkington would fill in for Civale but we discuss other options Joey Cantillo, Logan Allen, Xzavion Curry, and Peyton Battenfield. We also dig into the starting pitching in general for the Guardians this year.
We then get into the details of the loss today against the Chicago White Sox. It was a tighter game than it had any right to be after the injury to Aaron Civale. We talk about the good, every pitcher not named Hentges. The Guardians managed five hits and two of them were by Amed Rosario. It was not a great offensive day, and the Guardians dropped the series to the Chicago White Sox who are now just a half-game back. The Guardians are a game below .500 and will face the Tigers who swept the Guardians the last time they met.
We get into what has gone wrong for Sam Hentges and the overall answer is that there have been a lot of factors that have led to him giving up a run in eight of his last nine appearances. He is getting hit more often, walking more hitters, and giving up more line drives and fly balls. He was lucky early on, and unlucky a bit now but the question becomes is the middle ground going to be achievable or will there always be these ups and downs. Then we get into some of the top performers in the minors. At some point, we might all need to reevaluate Will Benson who has been left off the 40-man two years in a row but has changed his approach and has been one of the most productive players in the minors but not the most that title belongs to Bo Naylor who has had a massive rebound after a rough 2021. We also talk about recent draft pick Jake Fox, standing out for his production at the midway mark.

July 13, 2022Cleveland Guardians Split Another Double Header: Bieber is Brilliant, Bases Loaded Leaves Questions
The Guardians won the first game of the double header, we talk about the first complete game of the year for a Guardians’ pitcher this year. As a matter of fact, it was also a Maddux, which is a rare occurrence when a pitcher has a complete game and throws under 100 pitches. We also get into the possible All-Star snub for Shane Bieber. He has performed much better than I had thought over the course of the year. We also talk about the decision to not pinch-hit for Luke Maile with the bases loaded in the sixth inning.
We talk about the second game in the double header as it is occurring. We focus on the positive, which was a solid starter by Pilkington. We then focus on the potential positive performances of Nick Sandlin and James Karinchak. These two were supposed to be the late-inning arms for the Guardians. For Sandlin, this makes three strong appearances in a row and for Karinchak it is his best performance in a calendar year. If these two can start going it might make the Guardians pen one of the top few in all of baseball.
We continue to discuss the floated Franmil Reyes trade rumor. It is hard to believe but the rumor comes from a trusted reporter and the logic reported is exactly what one would say if one was looking to move him. We discuss how the DH position across baseball has underproduced what one would expect for a role that is just to hit. This leads one to wonder if maybe his old team which has pitching depth could come calling. We also watch as the Guardians load the bases yet again and make the curious choice to let one of the worst hitters statically this year hit with the game on the line.

July 12, 2022Nolan Jones Stays HOT: Cleveland Guardians Back to .500 Beat the Chicago White Sox
The Guardians made a move I have been asking for over a week now with the promotion of Alex Call and the release of Oscar Mercado. I don’t know if Call is even as good as Mercado, but at the same time, Alex Call has worked his tail off and improved every year to take him from a borderline prospect to a player in the big leagues. He has earned this chance to play and it was nice to see the Guardians reward a player for steady improvement. We also discuss Franmil Reyes quandary. It was reported he might be on the target block. We explain why it both makes sense and makes no sense. In the end, I agree with the view though, and explain what in particular makes me think this was inside information given out.
We discuss a minor trade that was made today between the Braves and the Royals. It involved a player who had been often rumored in Guardians deals over the last few years. It is also the rare trade that involved a draft pick changing hands. I talk about the player and why this type of trade could be an option for the Guardians going forward. If they are unable to consolidate for help now why it might make sense to consolidate prospect value for later.
We talk about the win which saw THREE Guardians hit by pitches, which is interesting as that is an issue that White Sox fans often have with the Guardians. I expect we might see some players exit tomorrow's game early. We get into the win which brings the guardians back to .500 and point out our three stars of the game Nolan Jones (fourth day in a row), Franmil Reyes (stolen base leader), and Trevor Stephen (nails when needed).

July 11, 2022 Cleveland Guardians are in a Funk But At Least They Have Nolan Jones: WHAT A DEBUT!!!!!!
1. While it was another rough weekend for the Guardians in general. It was a fantastic debut for Nolan Jones who reached base multiple times in every game. He hit the longest home run of the year, showing some of the easiest power we have seen from a Guardians’ player this year. We take some time to talk about the 2016 Cleveland Guardians draft and that draft in general. This draft has a chance to go down as one of the greatest in history with a chance to pass the 1989 draft for the greatest in franchise history. Nolan Jones, Shane Bieber, Aaron Civale, and Zach Plesac are the big names but even players like tanner Tully and Conner Capel have made it to the big leagues.
2. We talk about the Friday and Saturday games. While Saturday’s game was one of the best ones of the year for the Guardians. It was the Friday game that saw the Guardians bullpen implode that we focus on. We discuss what has been occurring with Eli Morgan and Sam Hentges over the last month that has seen both of them struggle in the setup role for Emmanuel Clase. We also talk about why I wish they would go to Clase based on leverage situations and not just closing situations.
3. We talk about the Sunday loss, we are watching as it occurs so there are comments about the Guardians finally getting a run across. This is a game where there was some bad luck, but at the end of the day, the offense was not good enough to get things done. We also congratulate Bryan Shaw for hitting his first appearance bonus and making an additional 150K this year. We should all be so lucky.

July 08, 2022Nolan Jones is Coming to Cleveland? Talking About the Impending MLB Draft on NHL Draft Night
While the Guardians did not play today that does not mean we have no news. Tobias Myers was traded away, It also looks like Nolan Jones might finally be on his way up to Cleveland. Before the 2021 season, he was widely viewed as the top prospect in Cleveland and one of the top 100 prospects in baseball. He had a bad few months and dealt with injuries and everyone seemed to give up. A year later he has decimated AAA pitching and is on his way to Cleveland it appears. He will give them a potential plus power player that the organization is lacking in general across the majors and minors.
We talked a little about the draft. I have been on three podcasts in the past week to talk about the draft and the Guardians. This class has a clear top eight to me, and what stands out is the bloodlines and the complete lack of college pitching. I don’t have a college pitcher in my top 15 players which has never happened in my decade-plus of covering the draft.
We end with some thoughts about what the Guardians might do at 16, in terms of who they have drafted in recent years. In addition, every year top talent slides on draft day. Last year there were three players that had top ten grades that ended up sliding into the late teens. I explain why I think the Guardians are expecting someone to slide and also who the three most likely candidates to slide are. We also talk about some candidates if the Guardians were to decide to go under slot so they could sign high-priced talent later in the draft.

July 07, 2022Swept by the Worst Offense in Baseball: This Might have Been the Worst Series In Years for Cleveland
It has been a rough few weeks for the Guardians. We talk about the roster moves that occurred, most that the Baltimore Orioles have claimed Kirk McCarty. We talk about who has played well over the last month and who has struggled. The top four hitters since the infamous Colorado series have been Franmil Reyes, Andres Gimenez, Josh Naylor, and Amed Rosario. We talk about how both Franmil and Amed had significant struggles but are now stepping forward. We also ask the question one has to ask is Jose Ramirez trying to play hurt actually hurting this team. Might it be better if he had rested over the past few weeks and got back to full health?
We talk about the game itself. Shane Bieber has not given up more than three runs since May 7th. The Tigers have had a historically bad offense but apparently, Cleveland pitching has helped fix that. Even with offensive struggles, the three stars for this game were all hitters Franmil Reyes, Owen Miller, and Steven Kwan. We also get into why even with the obvious reasons for his decline James Karinchak needs to be given a chance to see if he can even remotely get back to where he was back during his rookie year.
MLB has released its mid-season top 100 prospect list. We discuss who has moved up and down. The Guardians have six players who made the cut: Daniel Espino, George Valera, Gabriel Arias, Bryan Rocchio, Gavin Williams, and Tyler Freeman. I discuss why those six-plus Nolan Jones, Will Brennan, Logan Allen, and Bo Naylor are rather clearly the top 10 prospects in the Guardians system right now. We also talk about Micah Pries who on top of his fascinating story is currently the hottest hitter in the Guardians minors. He bares watching as he is another player who will be Rule 5 eligible at the end of this year and might be a 1B/OF who could help the Guardians sooner than later. We also discuss draft strategies as we are getting very close to the draft and we discuss why even though they are picking at 16 the Guardians will more than likely not be adding anyone who can crack their deep prospect list.

July 06, 2022Detroit Tigers Rock the Cleveland Guardians: Guardians A Game Over .500, Sandy Leon Ace?
Things have been bleak of late. I talk about some of the negativity on the show, which parts have been far, and which parts I might owe an apology for. We join this game in the seventh as Cleveland is getting shellacked by a Detroit Tigers offense that has been historically bad this year. I talk about the podcast and answer some user questions and respond to comments.
Next, we talk about the game tonight. It was a brutal affair that saw no one reach base more than once and every pitcher struggle outside of the great Sandy Leon. Listen, it was not a fun game, but it had its fun moments.
I talk about the state of the roster and what I would do if I was in charge. There are a lot of strong pieces in place, but there are some easy ways to make things better. We also again talk about how starting pitching is still the biggest weakness for this team outside of catcher. We continue to focus on Pablo Lopez and his 2.5 years of control as the pitcher who would be of greatest use for the Guardians due to his style, success, and years of control.

July 05, 2022 Double Bummer Cleveland Guardians Drop Two to the Detroit Tigers and Josh Naylor Gets Hurt Everything Stinks
1. Jose Ramirez is clearly hurt there, we said it. Since his thumb injury against the Colorado Rockies. His wRC+ has dropped 120 points and he has been a below-league-average bat. We talk about the effect it has had on the lineup and why it might be better for him to rest. We also get into the shock of seeing Ernie Clement as a pinch hitter. Clement is a great guy, I have heard. He has the speed and defense to be a solid major leaguer. Since the Colorado series he has a wRC+ of -42, and throughout the season has one of the lowest wRC+ in baseball.

2. We talk about the first game. The Guardians managed just two hits against a player the Tigers chose not to roster this offseason. Hill might not be a Tiger if there had been a Rule 5, so it is not just the Guardians benefiting. We talk about the Naylor injury and the offensive struggles in general outside of Naylor. We also give kudos to Zach Plesac for another solid outing.

3. We talk about the second loss of the day which puts the Chicago White Sox just 1.5 games behind the Guardians. It was another game of offensive struggles but the pitching was also an issue in this game. We talk about the players who are performing in the minors and why Alex Call, Will Brennan, and Nolan Jones should all be gaining consideration for this Guardians roster while injuries appear to be piling up and other players struggle to produce.

July 04, 2022These Guys are Really Good: New York Yankees Take Two of Three From the Guardians. I Rant about RHBs
The Guardians made a lot of roster moves over the past few days. We got into all of them from the call-up of Gabriel Arias to the impending return of Oscar Mercado. I focus on the basic fact that it should not matter if a player is right-handed or left-handed if they can’t hit. We focus on all the moves and explain why they were made.
Next, we talk about the Saturday doubleheader. It was a pair of extremely disappointing games. The Guardians could have had a chance in the second game but seemingly gave up late. We talk about the performances, what went wrong and what few things were positive.
We get to talk about the big win on Sunday which saw the continuation of a strong weekend for Franmil Reyes and the best start of the year for Triston McKenzie. We also get into some minor league talk. While Nolan Jones and Will Brennan are the players most know are performing well. But we spent some time on one of the hottest hitters in the Guardians minors Micah Pries. They missed all of 19 and 20 but is currently second in the Guardians minors in home runs in just his second minor league season after coming out of a tiny baseball program that currently has produced a total of .03 bWAR and just 50 games total in the big leagues and Pries has a chance to the greatest player in that program's history.
