Locked On Guardians - Daily Podcast On The Cleveland Guardians episodes

June 17, 2022Guardians and Rockies Crossover with Paul Holden and Jeff Ellis
It is another crossover edition of Locked on Guardians we talk with Ohio University graduate and Locked on Rockies host Paul Holden. We talk about the overall sloppy play of the trio of games. While the Guardians might not have been at their best they did enough to sweep the Colorado Rockies. We talk about what stood out for both of us during this series.
We get into the near future and overall arcs for the future of the Rockies and the Guardians. I tell a scouting story that helps explain things that are going wrong for the Rockies. We talk about why the Guardians have continued to be so successful and will continue to be so.
We continue to look deeply at the Guardians' success and why it should continue. I explain why not only should they stay in the Wild Card hunt, but also why they should only get better as this year goes on.

June 16, 2022Cleveland Guardians Get a Kwantum Save and Beat the Colorado Rockies
Ernie Clement is a fine player and a solid utility guy. But we focus on why it continues to be crazy to bench your second-best hitter just because a mediocre to poor lefty is on the mound. Austin Gomber would not make the Guardians rotation but he made the Guardians glue their second-best hitter to the bench. We also talk about how as I watch the broadcasts from other cities there is a stark difference in the amount of advanced data, thoughts, and numbers that seem to be discussed in most other markets.
We get into the game today, which for the second day in a row saw the Guardians win on a double play. It also saw them try and give away this game repeatedly due to sloppy play. They were lucky to be facing the Rockies though and managed to pull out the win. It might be time to lay off Amed Rosario who had his first home run of the year and continues to kill the Rockies. Instead, I focus on why it is time to talk about moving down Straw oh and also playing Andres Gimenez every day.
Finally, we preview the Dodgers series, tomorrow’s show is a crossover with Paul Holden of Locked on Rockies so I did the preview today. The Guardians and Dodgers match up decently well on the infield but after that, the advantage is sharply in the Dodgers' favor and the Guardians appear likely to drop multiple games this weekend. It is a rough stretch coming up, but if they want to show they are contenders they have to beat the teams ahead of them in the standing.

June 15, 2022Cleveland Guardians Couldn't Lose This Game No Matter How Hard they Tried
I won’t be recording while watching these next few games, as I want to sit back and enjoy hearing Jack Corrigan talk about the Guardians. I explain why he was the announcer of my youth and still one of my favorite announcers ever. I talk about why it is a bit sad that kids without cable don’t have the chances to watch this baseball team as I had as a kid. In general how baseball has made it harder and harder to watch their sport, and one has to wonder if part of the reason football is so successful is it is also so accessible.
We get into a game the Cleveland Guardians tried their best to give away. We talk about my issues with the lineup. Just in terms of OPS, this team is batting their second and third worst hitters in the top two spots in front of the best hitter in baseball. FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THINGS THAT ARE HOLY CAN WE STOP SLIDING INTO FIRST BASE. How is this still a thing? We talk about the big moments both the successes and failures that lead to this game being closer than it should have been.
We end with a discussion of the three stars of this game, before discussing tomorrow's matchup and why it is the only one that I am nervous about in this series. Then we do a quick check on the wildcard, before discussing the impact of former Guardians coach Matt Blake on the Yankees' runaway American League success.

June 14, 2022Prospect Talk The Top Bullpen Guys That Could Help This Year, and Bats Breaking Out
The Cleveland Guardians didn’t play but that just gives us plenty of time to talk about prospects. We get into some of the top performances statistically in the Guardians system. We talk about how Will Brennan has a chance to be the greatest Kansas State Wildcat in MLB history, and the third Wildcat to play for the Guardians. We also talk about another award winner from this week, Jack Leftwich. This leads to how the Guardians Front Office is kind of savage when it comes to realizing when development is not good and targeting programs. We talk a little about Tennessee and Notre Dame. As well as some looking back at the Clevinger deal and what people used to think of it.
We get into the weeds with Andrew Misiaszek and Nic Enright in AAA along with Aaron Pinto, Tim Herrin, and Nick Miklajchak. The first two just got promoted and we talk about why they went up while Pontcelli and Lingos went down. We get into the top-performing pitchers in general and why Andrew Misiaszek and Tim Herrin might be players who end up in Cleveland before the year is done. We also talk about the top offensive performers in the system. Did you know the top wRC+ in the system belongs to Bo Naylor? I also explain why I am still all in on a deal with the Cubs for the Guardians.
We end with our preview of the series against the Colorado Rockies, the rare series where the Guardians appear to have an advantage at catcher and in both corner outfield spots. The Rockies are not a strong team and with the way the pitching is set up the Guardians should win all three games but anything less than two wins is a massive disappointment.

June 13, 2022Cleveland Guardians: Future's So Bright, They Gotta Wear Shades
The Cleveland Guardians are currently third in the wild card, they have the youngest roster in baseball for the second year in a row. Yet none of their top prospects have hit the big leagues yet and they just added another prospect to MLB Pipeline's top 100 prospects giving them the most of any team in the top 100. This is a fun team right now and only going to get better. We talk about Gavin Williams's AA debut before diving into the come-from-behind walk-off win Friday against the Athletics.
Next, we talk about the disappointing game Saturday which was lost due to a Josh Naylor error in the seventh. We discuss how it might have played out if he had gotten the sure out before beginning to discuss the Sunday win. I also beg for the Guardians to stop benching better hitters due to perceived platoon advantages. The platoon advantage only works if you have good hitters otherwise you just end up with bad performances, either way, might as well let the young kids play.
We end up talking more about the Sunday win. We get into why even with Amed Rosario playing better why he should not be hitting 2nd or playing shortstop. He has a place on the Guardians but it is miscast. We talk about Trevor Stephen’s struggles before focusing on Oscar Gonzalez. We focus on how amazing he has been and try and find a pathway for him to succeed along with trying to just find any hitters that are similar to him in terms of walk percentages. I think there is a major league player there, but one has to release there are a lot of risks inherent in his profile when so few players like him find success yet also understand most players like him never even make it to the upper majors and find success let alone in the majors. Plus tune in to find out who has the highest career BABIP of ALL TIME.

June 10, 2022 Catching up with the Cleveland Guardians: Oscar Gonzalez Equals Roger Maris, Guardians have 8 of 10
1. We are back to focusing on the Cleveland Guardians but we start talking about prospects first talking about Daniel Espino who we hope returns quickly. Nolan Jones and Joey Cantillo also had big nights on Wednesday so we talk about them both. The Athletics then bring in Zach Jackson so we talk about when the Guardians acquired their own Zach Jackson and what we should have learned starting with the CC Sabathia trade where they go Zach Jackson and every trade since it has affected. The continued excellence of Oscar Gonzalez also leads to talk about Roger Maris, who came up with Cleveland and then was traded in what turned out to be a not-terrible trade for Cleveland.
2. We talk about the game as it is occurring, but also focus on the Texas Rangers series discussing the Guardians taking two of three from one of the teams that won the offseason. We talk about who performed well and who has not, and why this might have been the most important Shane Bieber start of the year.
3. We end up watching the Cleveland Guardians take the lead against the Athletics. For the third time, they come back and ended up winning 8-4. Even though they won I still hate bunting. In addition, as I was recording I missed Oscar Gonzalez pulling up lame so ignore my pinch-running statements. The Guardians are now just one game out of the wildcard.

June 06, 2022Cleveland Guardians Win the Series Against the Baltimore Orioles Are Nearly Back to .500
We start out talking about Amed Rosario and why playing him at shortstop and batting him at second is such a terrible choice for the Guardians. We talk about the importance of the number two spot. While also discussing Rosario’s history and on him is puzzling at best and worrisome at worst. No matter what you look at it he is clearly hurting the Guardians.
Next up is Friday's game which saw Shane Bieber have his best outing of the year and took a no-hitter into the six-inning. Everyone got in on the action as the offense had its best game in the series as well. We also focus on Saturday’s loss which saw the second start loss for Triston McKenzie. The Guardians had a chance for their first five-game win streak of the year but could not take advantage of runners in scoring position in a close affair.
We end with a discussion of the win on Sunday. It was the second quality start for Zach Plesac and his best start of the year. It was the second straight game where Andres Gimenez went deep, but this was a game-winner even though it happened in the first. Then we focus on the Rangers who are next up on the schedule for the Cleveland Guardians.
