Locked On Guardians - Daily Podcast On The Cleveland Guardians episodes

December 01, 2021Time to Get Tender and Talk about the Non-Tender Deadline
The non-tender deadline has passed. We focus on Taylor Clarke of the Diamondbacks and Richard Rodriguez of the Braves in the first segment. Both are pitchers with sparkling control, who very much could fit with the Indians and what they look for. I explain in depth why both could make sense for the Guardians. I also defend backup outfielder Bradley Zimmer and explain why he is still on the roster. Believe it or not, he has trade value due to elite defensive numbers and physical tools.
We go through the rest of the league but it is the Padres three arms Jose Castillo, Matt Strahm, and Trey Wingenter that stand out from the crowd. They have all had injury issues, but have all shown effectiveness in the big leagues and all have missed bats. Especially if they would consider a non roster invite to camp they would all be potential additions to a Guardians bullpen which might be the third biggest need on the team.
It was a busy day for old friends. Three former Guardians signed with new clubs, a pair with the Cubs who have Carter Hawkins formerly of the Guardians. Another was traded right before the non-tender deadline and I really wish the Guardians could have figured out how to have brought Joey Wendle home.

November 30, 2021Free Agency Madness Continues: Guardians Lie in Wait
We pull from WKYC’s article on the Cleveland City Councils' vote on the Cleveland Guardians renovations. We discuss why I am always a bit nervous about cities providing support to sports franchises. Yet why in this case this might be as good as it gets in terms of city support and them trying to base it all off of Guardians revenue streams.
Free Agency has been well like NBA and NFL free agency. The starters and the outfielders have been signing left and right. We talk about it all, and how it affects the Guardians. We also explain why it is unlikely the Guardians will be active but why that is not a bad thing.
We look at a group of players whose teams have waived or might waive to see if anyone could help the Guardians. We talk about the free-agent market and the big signings of the day. We discuss who is left among the starters and outfielders, a pair of groups that are highly picked over. Last we look at who could slide in free agency that the Guardians might jump on once the CBA is figured out.

November 29, 2021Free Agency Is Too Fast and Too Furious: Except for the Guardians
Free Agency has been a mile a minute for once, we talk about the big deals. We look at the starter market and even break news on the podcast. We also look back at our old friends, the Mets who have a surplus of bats.
We talk about Jeff McNeill some more, and still struggle to find a deal between the Indians and Mets that make sense. After their recent free agency splurge could Dom Smith, JD Davis, or Jeff McNeill be on the block. We also focus on a free agent market which is overpaying for outfielders and what that means for the Guardians.
We talk about the middle infielder market. A big domino in Marcus Semien fell, and the Mariners traded for Adam Frazier. We talk about where the Blue Jays stand and how they could be a trade candidate for the Guardians.

November 26, 20212017 MLB Draft Review No First Rounder No Problem
The Guardians had Kyle Nelson claimed by the Diamondbacks and Scott Moss by the Phillies. We explain why these claims happened, and what the upside for those players are. We also dig into why I am a bit surprised no one claimed Daniel Johnson.
Since the Guardians lost Kyle Nelson we look at the 2017 MLB Draft. The Guardians did not have a first-rounder after signing Edwin Encarnacion. In my Shadow Draft, I had them select Trevor Stephan with the top pick, so I explain why that was the right move and look at what signing Edwin cost them.
We look at picks from rounds three through 10 comparing players selected and then talk a bit about the day three picks like Kyle Nelson that worked out for the Guardians.

November 24, 2021Explaining Why the Guardians Are Poorer than You Think: Also all MLB is a JOKE
We start the show with a talk about why money will likely be tighter than most think when it comes to the offseason. We focus on no new minority ownership, problems with the TV contract, and ownership that is looking to sell more of the team.
We talk about the All MLB Teams, and why it was a joke that Jose Ramirez wasn’t the top third baseman or even on the second team. If one looks at fWAR the gap between JRAM and the second place Rafael Devers is 1.6 that is larger than the gap between Devers and the 10th place third baseman Jeimer Candelario. The outcome may be due to experts or maybe due to fans ending up with a joke of a result.
It is time for a trip around baseball checking out news and old friend alerts.

November 23, 2021 Doug Jones An All Time Great In Franchise History
1) Doug Jones passed away on Monday. He is one of the most underappreciated players in Guardians/Indian's history. I put him on the All-Time Guardians/Indians team a year ago. With his passing, we do an overview of what was one heck of an interesting career. From Jones not sticking until age 30 to learning his changeup grip from the Duke from Major League.

2) We go in-depth on Jones's time with the Guardians/Indians and his place in the record books. We point out where he is all time and how he compares to other greats. We show how Jones and his changeup in many ways was Mariano Rivera and his cutter before Mariano even if he was not quite at that same level.

3) We end with a look at the three moves the Guardians made on Monday. The Guardians signed Sandy Leon to a minor league deal. They traded Harold Ramirez to the Cubs for cash. They also traded JC Mejia to the Brewers for cash or a player to be named later. I explain why the trade was worded that way, and who I think the player the Indians might acquire could be.

November 22, 2021 Rule Five Fallout: 25% of the 40 Man Changed
1) We know who is finally protected for the Rule 5 draft. We talk about the players who were let go and why.

2) We dig into Tobias Myers who the Indians traded for. They choose to acquire him rather than protect their players. We explain why Cleveland is the perfect landing spot for him.

3) We talk about a surprise prospect who was left unprotected who once was a Guardian, not who you are thinking about. Then we dig into all the players who were protected by the Indians and who can help them next year.

November 19, 2021 Rule Five Decisions are Impending
1) Jose Ramirez finished 6th in the MVP voting. He should not have won the award. If you failed to include him in the top 10 then you don't get baseball.

2) Minor League Roster additions must be made by 6 PM Friday any player who is eligible for the Rule 5 and not added could be lost. We talk about the players who could be taken off and the slam dunks to be added.

3) We continue to focus on the players who could end up being added. We also focus on the names you don't need to worry about or are very unlikely to be added. Even if you might be reading the opposite out there.

1) Taking a look at the news around the league, and why I would be nervous about signing Justin Verlander.

2) We take a look into a draft that got the Indians three future big league lefties in Jeremy Sowers, Scott Lewis, and Tony Sipp. We dig into the early picks and top players in a class more known for its oddities than its star power.

3) We focus on day three, where the Indians did their best drafting finding a future 11-year vet and a pair of backup catchers.

November 17, 2021 Guardians Gear is Coming
1) The final hurdle has been crossed for the Guardians. Once you can buy the gear, we will rebrand the podcast as well. We get into why this got fixed so suddenly and why everyone agreed to get a deal done.

2) Next is the Athletic article from Monday, which went in-depth on the ownership possibilities for the Indians and why everyone might not want to assume new money, and more payroll is incoming. We also talked about some league news of the day.

3) Brian Barton and Trevor Crowe are a pair of outfielders who had very different paths to the big leagues, but both failed to establish themselves. We focus on the why.
