Locked On Nationals - Daily Podcast On The Washington Nationals

As we continue to ramp up for the 2023 regular season, the talk around town has been the Washington Nationals two top prospects James Wood & Elijah Green. For good reasons, they're the ones to talk about. But, we can't forget about this young, 19 year old 3B the Nationals took in the 1st round in 2021. Ryan discusses the future of this prospect, and talks about why you should almost be as excited for him as our top guys. Also, Ryan has a Spring Training stock report for the Washington Nationals as we have seen some stellar baseball from some of the younger guys, but also some low moments for big names. Ryan then chooses to tackle this popular subject amongst Major League Baseball, should you allow sstar players to play in the tournament?

As Washington Nationals skipper Davey Martinez has already announced who will be replacing Cade Cavalli in the meantime, Ryan is not happy about this decision. They've announced that 30 year old Chad Kuhl will replace him for the time being whether that is long term, or short term. Well... how does this make sense? The Nationals have plenty of in house options that could be better, Ryan makes that case for that today. Also, can we all just talk about how bad of a year this has been for the Nationals? Ryan goes over some of the low times over the last year as it ranges from superstar Juan Soto getting traded, and a doubtful future for World Series MVP Stephen Strasburg. The Nationals do hae a somewhat positive update that they can talk about when it comes to their TV deal with MASN, Ryan gets you up to date on that.

One of the Washington Nationals top prospects, Cade Cavalli, left yesterday's start with an elbow injury that he will be getting an MRI for. Ryan is joined by Danny Nokes from 106.7 The Fan to discuss Cade's injury as it did not look pretty. Davey Martinez discussed his injury after the game and described it as an elbow injury, but we give you the quotes from Davey himself and discuss what this could mean for the Nats top pitching prospect. We assume at this point that Cavaalli's injury would require some time off, so Ryan & Danny get into some possible replacements for the time being with some guys already being in house, and others the Nats could snag via free agency. Lastly, Danny reacts to the Keiebert Ruiz extension as the boys want to end on a positive note.

If you missed it yesterday, Elijah Green made his Spring Training debut for the Nats & hit a 2-run RBI triple that got Nationals fans EXCITED for the future, as you should be. Elijah Green isn't the only young, high ceiling prospect you should be excited about. Ever heard of the Nats #1 prospect James Wood? Well, it's time to break down both of these guys as they have some of the highest ceilings in all of baseball, which brings us to a big question. Who has the higher ceiling, James Wood or Elijah Green? Ryan then gets to the legend Joey Meneses as he tore Team USA apart on Sunday batting for Team Mexico and slugging 2 homeruns to carry Mexico over USA in a big upset. Ryan appreciates Meneses and his success here, and translates it into some Nats banter. What rule would Ryan change this second as far as the new rules go?

Keibert Ruiz and the Washington Nationals agreed to an 8-year extension worth $50 million, and everyone should be happy. Keibert Ruiz is considered to be a stout defensive catcher at this point, and that alone is a huge deal considering where we are at with this rebuild. Young pitchers need to feel comfortable behind the plate, and Ryan explains just why Ruiz is the perfect fit for it. Ruiz has had some inconsistencies at the plate, but don't let that overshadow you from the potential that he has at the plate. Ryan discusses what Ruiz needs to improve on, and how he can improve on these things moving forward. Signing Ruiz to this 8-year extension is fantastic, but what's even better about it is what this says about the Nationals organization. Who could be the next extension for the Nats?

Ryan Clary is joined today by Tobi Altizer, host from 106.7 The Fan- the flagship radio station for the Washington Nationals in DC. Ryan & Tpbi jump immediately into the pitching staff, and narrow in on some of the younger guys like Josiah Gray, Mackenzie Gore, & Cade Cavalli. We then talk about Trevor Williams, and the pop he could provide at the top of the rotation as he has had some good moments down in West Palm Beach. We then start discussing the future of the young position players like CJ Abrams. CJ is a former top 10 prospect in all of baseball, and has all the talent in the world. What has looked different so far in 2023 for the kid? Also, Ryan believes there is a renaissance coming to the catcher position and it could fare out well for Keibert Ruiz.

Mackenzie Gore has flashed a TON of his potential down in West Palm Beach for the Washington Nationals, but his flashiness isn't just on the mound. It's his leadership, and his intensity that has also sparked interest in the southpaw for Ryan. So, which Washington Nationals legend does Ryan see when he watches Mackenzie Gore? Well it may not be his stuff, but he certainly looks the part of him. We also get to a Nats stock report down in spring training, who has been able to raise their stock for the first few weeks of Spring Training? And, who has lost their stock in spring training? Ryan discusses this today. Lastly, we have seen a lot of young guys play in major league camp. But, why haven't we seen much of Robert Hassell III, Brady House, or even James Wood? Ryan takes a stab at that today as well.

The Washington Nationals are in the thick of this rebuild, and when looking at the farm system, it is clearly night and day better than last year. But, some things the team just simply can't control. And one of those things you can't control, may be one of the reasons this rebuild could be a little longer than you think. Ryan discusses the rebuild, and talks about the one thing we could be missing when it comes to the Nats. Then, it's time to focus back on spring training as Corey Dickerson has been CRUSHING the baseball down in West Palm Beach. But, is this the Corey Dickerson we will get all year? Ryan explains what he thinks of the former gold glover, and tries to project what he could be down the line in 2023.

Keibert Ruiz, former top prospect in the Washington Nationals system, had HUGE expectations and so far, has yet to live up to all the hype around him. That doesn't mean that he has disappointed so far in the majors, but we haven't seen the full, finished product of what Ruiz could be down the stretch of his career. So, what are realistic expectations for Keibert Ruiz heading into his 2nd full season with the Washington Nationals? The Nats have 5 players departing for the World Baseball Classic, and with that there are a ton of open spots down in camp. So, what are some of the positions that have opened up because of that? And, who will benefit the most out of this?

On today's Locked On Nationals, Ryan discusses the future of former 1st round pick of the New York Mets, Dominic Smith. Dominic Smith was DFA'd by the Mets over the winter, and was picked up by the Washington Nationals to fill Josh Bell's role with the team going forward. What's the strengths, and weaknesses of Dominic Smith? What does he have to improve on going forward to revive his once high flying career? It's also time to look at two names in the outfield that don't get talked about enough. When looking at the production from both of these guys, you have to ask yourselves this; what's their upside? Well, the upside is in fact there. It just isn't talked about enough. You'll hear about their production at the plate, and what they both can provide defensively in the outfield.
