Locked On Nationals - Daily Podcast On The Washington Nationals

Chelsea Janes of the Washington Post wrote about the future of the sale for the Washington Nationals, and pointed out that the future of the sale is still uncertain. If you look around the MLB, there's a lot of turmoil when it comes to ownership. You have the Nats & the Orioles in a never ending court battle over the rights for MASN, the Angels decided they won't be selling the team after all. And, Bally Sports has gone under leaving 14 teams in baseball with a hige question mark going forward regarding TV rights. Ryan explains it all as to why the Nats may not sell in 2023. With spring training on its way, there are 3 big storylines to watch in camp. WHat's the most enticing one? Also, we were provided an update on former top prospect Carter Kieboom, & his recovery from Tommy John surgery.

Pitchers & catchers reported yesterday, so Ryan gets you all the news & notes from West Palm Beach. But first, Davey Marttinez was asked about the recovery for Stephen Strasburg, and he said that he had another setback in his recovery. If you remember, Strasburg had TOS surgery back in the Summer of 2021, and has since not been the consistent Strasburg that we all loved. Ryan takes a deep, long look into Strasburg's future and really tries to see what's next for the former World Series MVP. On top of that, Davey Martinez got into Cade Cavalli and mentioned that nothing is guaranteed for the top prospect going into 2023. Could Cavalli start the season in AAA once again? Lastly for the cherry on top of day 1 of spring training, Cole Henry seems to have found his groove after having TOS surgery in the offseason as well.

Spring Training is HERE! Pitchers & catchers have reported to West Palm Beach and the season is officially a GO! Obviously, ther Nationals didn't make any crazy signings or trades even for that matter, but just cause you don't make any big acquisitions doesn't mean you didn't approve. In fact, Ryan believes they did improve much more this offseason compared to last year. You'll find out why he thinks that to open up the show. Then, a lot of people have been chatting about what excitement is there heading into the season? Well, again, there is WAY more excitement heading into this year than last year. Not only is the team younger, but top to bottom there's way more talent throughout this team (minus losing Juan Soto). To wrap up the show, where did the Nats get better in the offseason? What position benefited the most from this long offseason?

On February 13th 2023, Ted Lerner passed away at the age of 97. Ted Grew up as an usher for the Washington Senators at Griffith Stadium in DC & grew up a HUGE baseball fan. His one goal in life as he continued his journey, was he wanted to bring baseball back to the Nation's Capital. And he did just that, and topped it off with opening a beautiful stadium that we call home now. Ryan remembers his life on today's show. MLB made some permanent changes this offseason regarding some of the rules, and the ghost runner on 2nd base will now be a permanent fixture in extra innings during the regular season. How does Ryan feel about that? Not only was that rule enabled, but they are now adding a pitch clock that forces pitchers to work in a timely manner. Ryan discusses it all today, and wraps up with those thoughts.

Happy Super Bowl Sunday but don't forget... baseball starts VERY soon. Mark Zuckerman of MASN wrote about the Nats and their spending woes over the last few offseasons, but that doesn't mean we should hit the red button just yet. Ryan toes the line of why the Nationals shouldn't be spending too much now as we're in the thick of this rebuild. If the Lerner's stay on as owners for the foreseeable future, will this problem continue? Since it's Super Bowl Sunday after all, Ryan decides to create a football team with their positions, for the Washington Nationals. Who will be QB1 for the Nats? The World Baseball Classic starts in March, and the Washington Nationals have multiple players leaving West Palm Beach to join their country to compete in the WBC. You'll find out who on today's show!

We are ONE WEEK AWAY FROM PITCHERS & CATCHERS REPORTING TO WEST PALM BEACH! Get excited, cause baseball is in the air and we are excited about the season regardless of what the Washington Nationals did this offseason. So, to kick off the excitement for the season, Ryan answers the 3 biggest questions heading into 2023. Who will take the 3B job at the end of the season, and spend the bulk of the season at the hot corner? Will Joey Meneses finish where he left off and have a big 2023 year? Which veteran will take the next step in establishing themselves as a major leaguer? Ryan answers all of those questions on today's show. Also, former Nationals executive Jim Bowden wrote a piece on the possibility of restructuring the entire MLB based on two expansion teams. What will take place, and what division will the Nats end up in?

On today's Locked On Nationals, Ryan is joined by Danny Nokes, host from 106.7 The DFan to start getting ready for Spring Training. Danny gives his input on the starting pitching, and Ryan may have made a claim on the Nats pitching staff you will want to hear. Between the two key young guys this year for the Nats, Mackenzie Gore and CJ Abrams, who do you think takes the biggest step up in 2023? We toss the ball around on that as well. FanDuel has updated their season win totals for the Nats, and we discuss that as the Nats arent heavy favorites to win too many games this year. Is there a sense of optimism besides that over/under?

There have been a lot of special teams in baseball over the years, but Ryan thinks there's one that sticks out the most; your 2019 Washington Nationals. The acquisitions made during the year, the star power, the role players, the front office were ALL special that year. But what made them so special?M Ryan discusses the superstars that made the Nationals World Champions. Then, he discusses the role players, and the roles they played to make the Nats World Series champions. Ryan rounds out this podcast by discussing the 2 D's that made those Nationals special, and you'll find out what those letters stand for. Hint: those 2 D's are more important than ever for a rebuilding Nationals team.

As we sit here today, the Washington Nationals are expected to be one of the worst teams in all of baseball heading into 2023. But, that doesn't mean they can't be good, or even great at something. Ryan highlights the young bullpen that has some promising pieces for ultimately a not so good team. What can we expect out of guys like Hunter Harvey, Kyle Finnegan, Mason Thompson, & Carl Edwards Jr? Also, one of the Nationals top pitching prospects, Cole Henry, was seen yesterday pitching off a mound after recovering from TOS, the same injury Stephen Strasburg has. Ryan discusses the potential Cole H\enry brings to the table, as you could see him as soon as this summer with the Nats. Then, Ryan ends on a quick 2023 preview with expectations. Where should your priorities be heading into a rebuilding season?
