Locked On Wild - Your Daily Minnesota Wild Podcast

On today's episode of Locked on Wild, Zach Zeman returns and we discuss the signing of Jordie Benn. Will he be more of a depth player or could he actually get starters minutes on the 3rd line?

We then move to trying to figure out who is the best center in Wild history. We start with maybe the most obvious choice in Mikko Koivu. Koivu is a perfect example of longevity and consistency which allowed him to climb to the top of almost every statistical category in the history of the franchise. We discuss the offense that Eric Staal, Brian Rolston and Mikael Granlund brought to the table in their short time with the team. We also discuss the defense and grit that Wes Walz, Pierre Marc-Bouchard and Kyle Brodziak brought with them. And we ponder what could have been with Pavol Demitra had he been with the team for longer than two seasons.

On today's episode of Locked on Wild, Zach Zeman joins to give his reaction to the news that the KHL will not be taking on Kirill Kaprizov as a player this season. While expected, it was still a surprise to Zach to finally hear it officially put into words. We then look at some of the most memorable games of the 2020-21 season, including their Wild comeback win against Vegas 6-5 with two goals in the final 90 seconds of play, the 8-3 win over Colorado, Kirill Kaprizov's hat trick against Arizona, and his Overtime winner against the Kings to start the year. We also discuss Dean Evason keeping the team in check after a very successful roadtrip as a pivotal moment in the season as well. We then look at the 2021-22 schedule, and Zach has a few key dates to keep in mind, including reunions with Zach Parise (potentially) and Ryan Suter, as well as the first trip for the Kraken to Xcel Energy Center and of course the Winter Classic.

On today's episode of Locked on Wild, Alex Micheletti returns to look at players who have something to prove in 2021-22. We start though with the latest on Kirill Kaprizov and his ongoing contract negotiation with the Wild. What play does his agent have now that the KHL has officially stated that Kaprizov will not play in their league next year? We also discuss the news that Alexander Khovanov is expected to return to play in America this coming season.

To "Players with something to prove in 2021-22", we start with Kaapo Kahkonen. Can Kaapo prove that he didn't just put up good numbers against the bad teams in the West next season and show he is more than a backup goalie? Can Kevin Fiala bank on himself and have another solid season to set himself up for a huge extension? Can Kirill Kaprizov prove he is worth the money he is asking, and the money the Wild are willing to give him? Can Joel Erkisson Ek prove he is worth the extension the Wild gave him early in the offseason? And can Matt Boldy, Marco Rossi and Calen Addison prove that they are ready to take the next step and be impact players for the Wild?

On today's episode of Locked on Wild, we look at some of the two way depth the Wild have on their roster in the event that they suffer injuries. If Cam Talbot or Kaapo Kahkonen are injured, the choice seems pretty clear that Andrew Hammond would fill in. But will he be the third goalie at the NHL level or get some starts in Iowa? On defense a name has lept over Calen Addison on the 3rd line opposite Dmitry Kulikov. Would Calen still be the first man up in the event of injuries? And on offense who slots in next to Ryan Hartman and Kevin Fiala? My choice would be Matt Boldy. And don't be surprised if we don't see Marco Rossi this year unless he forces his way onto the roster, because his center spot is currently occupied.....by Victor Rask on the top line.

On today's episode of Locked on Wild, Seth and Zach react to the news that Kevin Fiala has avoided arbitration as he and the Wild settled at $5.1 million for this season's salary. We look at what this means for the potential of a long term deal going forward, and whether or not this strategy could backfire for the Wild. We also discuss recent comments by Wild GM Bill Guerin as to progress with the Kirill Kaprizov extension talks, and when we could potentially expect a deal to be struck. We finish by looking into the future to see who currently on the roster we expect will still be with the team in 5 years.
