#44 Beyond the Loss of Homeland: Inventing New Concepts?
Just before the Tokyo exhibition, we reflect on Yuk Hui's "Post-Europe." We discuss Heidegger's "enframing" and "planetarization," the Kyoto School and wartime ideology, and Yuk Hui's concept of "individuation of thought." What does it mean to invent new concepts rather than neutralizing binary oppositions? We explored the meaning of shaping thought from one's own position.
■🔑 (EN)
Want to articulate thoughts despite superficial knowledge / Heidegger, philosopher during the age of technological development / "Enframing," everything becomes resources to be exploited / Earth became planetarized, loss of homeland / Metaphysics ended, "beginning of world civilization based on Western European thought" / Heidegger tried to return to ancient Greek techne (craft) / Nishida Kitaro and the Kyoto School, mutual influence with Heidegger / Nishitani Keiji studied under Heidegger, 1930s / Nishitani's episode of white rice tasting amazing in Germany / "Overcoming modernity" influenced Japan's wartime ideology / Yuk Hui from Hong Kong, criticizes Heidegger / "The Question Concerning Technology in China," overcomes planetarization through "technological diversity" and "cosmotechnics" / "Recursivity and Contingency" deepens "technological diversity" / "Post-Europe" discusses "individuation of thought" / Affirming the loss of homeland, "entering from one planetary perspective" / "Thought individuates through the individual" / Not neutralizing binary oppositions but "inventing new concepts" / Works with oblique approaches to binary oppositions are interesting / Need something new beyond just neutralizing disparities / Trying to generate new concepts from the incompatibility between "recording" and "live voice"!

#37 More Craft Than Art or Design (Guest: Baku Hashimoto)
In this episode, filmmaker Baku Hashimoto joins us to talk about “technology and moving image”: his high‑school broadcasting club documentaries, a career of making all kinds of music videos, why he prefers works that remain as video over fully interactive installations, how his approach is rooted in a craft‑like way of making, and what he has learned from open‑source culture about contributing to the commons.
■🔑 (EN)
Theme of “technology and moving image” / introducing filmmaker Baku Hashimoto and a title coined by a cultural anthropologist / self‑ghosting by asking others to write your bio / high‑school broadcasting club documentary on optimizing a long train commute / early works left online as “digital tattoos” and watching them age / formative critique from the art director behind the NHK logo / making a wide range of work with music videos at the center / moving across motion graphics, live‑action, stop‑motion, and CG / media‑art‑like style rooted in electronics and programming / preferring works that remain as video rather than pure interactivity / media‑art archiving issues and the idea of “keeping the work itself” as video / a craft‑oriented, hands‑on attitude to making / local language and identity around Hokkaido dialect (“mazaru,” “namara”) / interest in how media like books and video “remain” over time / oscillating between installation and video when thinking about what a work is / respect for time‑based media, especially music, as a pure form / influence of MTV‑era quirky, trick‑based music videos / filmmakers’ complex about film versus video image quality / designer‑focused interfaces and HCI collaborations that lead to joint research / learning about “work” as collective research through writing papers / respect for small, niche contributions and academic novelty / hacker culture and open source / Eric S. Raymond’s “The Cathedral and the Bazaar” and contribution vs. “smartness” cultures / pleasure (and sly pride) in publishing methods and materials so others can copy them

#36 Making and Selling in One Loop (Guest: Kengo Sato, Part 2)
In Part 2, neon‑sign technology developer and “Shingi” founder Kengo Sato shifts from making to “selling.” Building on the previous episode about digital fabrication and production, we talk about pricing that avoids going into the red, reinvesting sales into equipment, learning from events like Design Festa and core fans who love Hong Kong neon, building feedback and customer support channels, writing reproducible manuals, and what it means to run a small one‑person business that loops “making” and “selling” together.
■🔑 (EN)
From making + digital fabrication to “selling” in practice / expanding from neon‑style accessories into imported apparel / starting from “miniatures I personally want” / posting on Instagram → showing at Design Festa and gaining traction / meeting core fans who travel to Hong Kong many times a year / pricing as a hobby + side business that avoids losses / reinvesting sales into equipment (e.g., buying a laser cutter) / expanding production methods to raise quality and expression / juggling rising material costs and price increases / designing sustainable pricing / feedback forms and messages from overseas / encouraged by how many people genuinely find the work “cute” / closing the gap between expectations and the actual product via customer support / deciding which production steps can be handed off to others / stopping at the prototype stage for methods that require heavy skill / commitment to reproducible manuals and workflows / not separating making and business, but looping them within one person / shift from division‑of‑labor corporate models to small personal businesses / sense that basic business skills are learnable (like passing a basic English exam) / while making feels more difficult and singular / resonating with creators who balance unique works and mass‑produced goods / continuing practice by cycling “making” and “selling” / possibility of selling the “process of making” as a service / business not only as selling objects, but also services and projects / new forms of creation that spin making and selling together

Kengo Sato, creator of the neon‑inspired accessory brand “Shingi,” joins us to explore the possibilities opened up by digital fabrication. Starting from his response to Hong Kong’s fading neon signs and keychain making, we trace his development of a two‑layer acrylic structure with UV printing and laser cutting, securing a patent for protection and cultural continuity, and building a small‑team production system that separates making from delivering—holding together what technology now makes possible and the process of getting work into people’s hands.
■🔑 (EN)
Guest: started development in 2018 → accessory brand “Shingi” / patent filed in 2021 → granted / living between Sapporo and Tokyo / decline of Hong Kong neon signs (regulation, aging craftsmen → LEDs) / frustration at lack of souvenirs → making his own / digital fabrication (UV printer / laser cutter / 3D printer) / 2010s maker movement wave / two‑layer acrylic + etching + UV print to evoke neon glow / miniaturizing front neon tube + back‑painted panel structure / floating edges and parallax effects / showing at Design Festa → sensing copy risks / patent for protection and cultural preservation / small team handles mass production (cutting / printing / bonding / packing) / designing systems “others can make” / interest in metalwork and small‑scale casting (cost barrier) / limits and possibilities of digital fabrication / prioritizing feedback from buyers / adjusting designs for wearability over flashiness / balancing exhibition (showing) and commerce (delivering) / non‑art‑school background yet developing and selling with only tens of thousands of yen / personal obsessions turned into prototypes / aiming for multiple brands and collaborations
