Managing Money and Dealing with Financial Struggles with Endometriosis with Michelle Manuel of Her Wealth IQ

Listen Later

This title may seem a little odd to you - but endometriosis affects every area of a person’s life. Every area. That means finances too. In fact, my friend Vickie Williams, recently shared these stats from a worldwide study:

  • 7,000 women across 52 countries, over 40% have given up or lost jobs due to endo, and others have gone part-time or self-employed.

  • Women with endo lose 10.8 hours a week due to pain.

  • Women with endo lose £5,750.72 a year due to time off sick.

It’s bad enough that’s someone’s wellbeing is affected by endometriosis, and that their social life is affected too - let alone the worry of having to take time off and potentially lose money due to being unwell. And what about those of us who need to take a break from working? Or who lose their jobs because their employers don’t understand endometriosis? How do we cope with the financial implications?

It’s no secret to you guys that I took a £10k pay drop to make my work life with endometriosis manageable. And although that came with huge benefits, it also came with a lot of financial stress. I had to use credit cards to pay for things, and I was worry about money constantly. I didn’t have the energy or the health to take the months or years it would have taken me to build financial security, so I just had to get on with it. But you guys don’t have to go down that route.

That’s why today, I’m speaking to financial coach Michelle Manuel, banker turned women’s finance coach and founder of Her Wealth IQ, who’s been through extreme financial difficulties and abundance, and knows how to manage money. In this episode we’re talking about how to manage your money and how to take on those particular challenges that come with endometriosis. We chat about handling priorities on a tight budget, how to save to cover sick pay and losses in earnings and how to plan for the future when you have endometriosis.

This is a really, really good episode which I think will be helpful for anyone - even people who don’t have endometriosis! And giving that it’s almost Christmas time, hopefully this episode will give you back some control at probably the most expensive time of the year.
