Maximum Film!

The author of the new film and TV book The Male Gazed (who also penned the 33 1/3 volume on Judy at Carnegie Hall) joins us to celebrate that great icon of gay culture, Judy Garland, in the barn-burning role that should have won her an Oscar. Then, the gang gets quizzed on the similarities between the four different versions of A Star Is Born ('37, '54, '76, and 2018).

“Hey, big 300th episode coming up soon…what movie should we watch?” A complex question with a simple answer. We watched 300, one of Zack Snyder’s first movies, and brought back OG co-hosts Ricky and April to weigh in. Adding a unique twist to the matter: only one of these five folks had ever seen this movie before.

Later, of course, we look back at some of our favorite memories from our first 300 episodes.

In 2001, they started out as simple street racing highway robbers. Since then, they've loved, they've died, they've come back to life, they've saved the world probably. At long last, their story comes to and end...er...hold up...it's not the end? It doesn't even know the meaning of the WORD "end?" In any case, it's Fast X, and our engines are suitably revved for Dom and them (and some new faces) to race back into our lives.

Over 50 years ago, Judy Blume wrote a classic coming-of-age novel about a nice girl who was simultaneously facing a move to New Jersey, sixth grade, puberty, and questions about God and religion. They say good things come to those who wait…the multi-hyphenate host of The JV Club, Janet  Varney, joins us to weigh in on if this adaptation was one of those things. Plus, a lot of good and informative strike talk, and a few more ideas for childhood classics to adapt.

Little Richard is a fixture of American culture, and if you were born after the 1950s, you may never have known a time when that wasn’t the case. But chances are, even if you know Little Richard’s name and larger-than-life persona, you still don’t know the half of what he contributed to culture (and not just music culture). Lisa Cortes’s documentary sets the record straight (well, okay, not straight…) and we have Juilliard ethnomusicology professor Fredara Hadley (who appears in the doc as an expert) here to help us talk it out.
