Maximum Film!

The directorial debut of Raine Allen-Miller, RYE LANE is set mostly on and around the Southeast London Street of the same name, and follows Dom and Yas (David Jonsson and Vivian Oparah) from meet-not-so-cute to grand romantic finale. But RYE LANE is that genre movie that shows it ain’t (just) what you do, it’s the way that you do it. Film critic Aramide Tinubu joins us to discuss!

What’s better that one kaiju? Two kaiju? No, think bigger. We’re talking ALLL monsters…and the sexy alien overlords who are controlling their minds. We’ve got Alonso’s co-host on Linoleum Knife (and in life), Dave White, joining us to expand our kaiju appreciation. Plus, we consider some technology news from real-life 1999 (the year this movie is set – it was released in ‘68) and invent some kaiju of our own.

Jerzy Skolimowski’s EO is probably not the first film to premiere at Cannes, land on a ton of annual Top Ten lists, and then get nominated for Best International Feature at the Academy Awards. But it’s the first movie to do all that AND be about – and starring – a donkey. Comedian Ashley Ray joins us to talk about our silent protagonist’s adventure across Europe. Then, a certain bear joins the Hall of Excellence and we pick some other non-human POVs that would make good cinema.

What’s Good:

From director Elizabeth Banks comes a romp through the woods of Blood Mountain, with a cast of fun actors (Margo Martindale! O’Shea Jackson Jr! Keri Russell! Isiah Whitlock, Jr!, the late, great Ray Liotta!) trying not to be mauled to death by a coke-addled black bear. And we’ve got The Flop House’s Dan McCoy with us to pick up the bloody pieces. Today’s movie premiered at Cannes 2022 and was the Cambodian entry for Best International Feature at this year’s Oscars (though it didn’t make it off the shortlist). It follows newcomer’s Park Ji-Min’s Freddie as she returns to Korea for the first time since her adoption as a baby by French parents. Our guest is comedian Josh Johnson, whose new special Up Here Killing Myself is on Peacock.
