Following comments on social media claiming that the EPA contacts complainants saying that the odour was coming from a broken clay seal on pipes causing a gas leak, the EPA confirmed to Triple M that this wasn't true.

In a statement they told Triple M, 

The EPA is actively working with Coffs Harbour City Council and Biomass to help them to rectify the current odour issue and ease discomfort for nearby residents. 

Following an increase in odour-related complaints since early April 2021, EPA officers have been conducting regular inspections of both the landfill waste facility and the Waste Treatment facility to identify what may be causing the offensive odours and work out what can be done to mitigate them.  

Coffs Harbour City Council and Biomass and Coffs Harbour City Council’s landfill waste facility have committed to engaging industry experts to assess their operations to help pinpoint the cause of the odours in the England Road area. We’ve asked Council and Biomass for an interim report by 14 May, and for full reports by the 28 May. Council and Biomass have advised the EPA they expect to meet these timelines.

The interim and final reports are expected to address all potential odour sources, assess actual odour sources, determine their cause and recommend mitigation strategies.
