Coffs Harbour City Council have confirmed that soil from the Cultural and Civic Space Project in Gordon Street will be transported for treatment in Queensland.

In a statement to Triple M, Council said the decision was made following community concern with the original plan to treat the soil at the Sawtell Sewerage Treatment Plant. 

The change of plan will not impact on the project cost according to Coffs Harbour City Council, with the cost factored into a contingency allocation as part of the $81.27million project.

After some community concern about treating the excavated Acid Sulphate Soil at Sawtell Sewerage Treatment Plant other options were investigated by the Cultural and Civic Space Project Board.

 

The Project Board has decided the best alternative method of remediation is to transport the material to a specialist facility in Queensland.

 

The alternative method addresses community concern and will result in better environmental outcomes as the soil will be able to be reused.  There is no additional budget impact as Council’s adopted budget of $81.27m for the Project includes a contingency amount to specifically deal with changes to the plan for the excavation and removal of soil during the groundworks phase of the Project.
