Randy Bell is the owner of the world's largest collection of Houdini artifacts and uses these amazing items to take us on a journey through the history of magic tricks and magical stunts. As we learn more about how magic actually works, we come to understand that magicians follow a set pattern to trick their audiences. Radio Free Mormon demonstrates a phenomenal magic trick that left us speechless to illustrate this point. Ethical magic is used by magicians to deceive an audience that wants to be deceived. This is entertainment. Mormonism uses tricks too, often on an unsuspecting audience that believes the deception with lasting, lifetime consequences. On this episode of Mormonish Podcast, Rebecca and Landon are joined by Nemo the Mormon to discuss a hot button issue in the McKinney Texas Temple scenario, the United Methodist Church Bell Tower ordinance.

This issue is very easy to misunderstand so we take everyone carefully through the Fairview Town Council and Fairview Planning & Zoning Board meeting minutes step by step. Our hope to clarify the confusion and help everyone understand what actually happened with the United Methodist bell tower over the last 18 years.

The LDS church seems to want to use this as precedence that would allow them to build a 173 ft tall steeple. In the simplest terms, while the town council back in the day did comment that they didn't have a problem with the belltower, they then would have followed the process to send the plan back to Planning & Zoning to work on issues related to codes like the height and decibel of the bells.

Nothing was approved, nothing was signed with final signatures for height and decibel and the tower was never built. Eleven years later the Methodist church built a much smaller tower.

(This episode originally aired last year but the "bell tower defense" continues to be used over and over by faithful Mormons. It's important to understand the truth.)

Frank is a civil trial lawyer licensed in Utah who has personally sat in depositions and in the courtroom during civil litigation that stems from experiences on an LDS mission.In our episode he brings to light the types of abuses; physical, sexual, emotional, religious, etc. that may occur while someone is serving an LDS mission.

This is a very eye opening and sobering episode and I'm sure many of our viewers and listeners can relate to many of the scenarios we go through.

Our intent in sharing this information is to help all of us find positive ways to support missionaries and prepare them for the experience by promoting autonomy, even under the restrictive missionary system.

(Mormonish has had many people reach out and ask about this episode since I mentioned it on The Mormon Newscast. Because of renewed interest, we're reposting it a year and a half later.)

A favorite Mormonish returning guest, Rob Lauer, told us about his experiences as a theater major at BYU in the early 1980s.

The late 1970s and 1980s were a difficult time for LGBT students who were attending BYU. They were hunted down and entrapped and forced to live a hidden life or be removed from school.

Rob described an off campus house, affectionately called, "The Beaver Cleaver" house, where several LGBT theater majors lived together and dealt with the difficult environment that existed at BYU during that time. The bright spot in this whole era was their connection with each other and the life long friendships they formed.

We asked Rob if he thought his former roommates might ever consider coming on our podcast to share their experiences. Rob told us he was in contact with these wonderful men, but they had never spoken publicly about that era at BYU. But he would ask them.

Unbelievably, the roommates felt ready to tell their stories and we are so honored to have them on Mormonish Podcast as they reconnect with each other, reminisce, work through some difficult trauma, and share their wonderful humor and positive outlook today even as they look back on the pain they experienced.

You will be forever changed by this episode, I know we were.

With renewed interest in The Nauvoo Expositor affidavits as a “silver bullet” for proving Joseph Smith practiced polygamy, Mormonish is releasing its episode with RFM debuting his groundbreaking evidence about the polygamy affidavits contained in the Expositor. Did Joseph Smith record D&C 132, the revelation on plural marriage? A growing number of members of the church and splinter groups believe that Joseph Smith did not practice polygamy, but rather, this practice was instituted by Brigham Young. They also believe that any written record of Joseph's polygamy, including D&C 132 was created by someone other than Joseph to make it appear that Joseph Smith practiced polygamy.
