  • Episode 17: Begin Reading Today
    https://guardiansports.com/guardian-caps/
The best time to plant a tree, 20 years ago. The next best time, today!
We all need to pull an Orville Rogers. Orville was born in 1917. Abandoned by his father at the age of 6. He attended the University of Oklahoma and became an engineer. He also learned to fly planes while in college since it was one of his two passions. The other was Jesus Christ.. Upon graduation he served in WWII and then later became an airline pilot for the next 32 years. At the age of 50 he read a book, Aerobics, by Kenneth Cooper. This turned him on to jogging. From that day forward he started running and it's said that he ran over 47k miles from the time he started at age 50 until his death at 101. For fun, you tube - You're Never Too Old to Run - 99-year-old Orville Rogers upset 92-year-old Dixon
I heard a coach at a clinic 10-12 years ago talk about how he had read ‘Good to Great’ by Jim Collins. The guy had won a bunch of games so I said, I will read that one too. From that point forward, I do not believe there has been a day that I have not read first thing in the morning. I spend 30 minutes minimum and up to 2 hrs on the weekend every day. That has averaged 70 books a year, 700-900 books in that time. Life changing. Books allow you to learn from the best and learn anything you wish to know. It provides a constant story you can share with others. I have learned so much that has benefited myself, as well as my family and our teams/schools/communities.
Again, 30 minutes a day not hard and not game changing. But, 30 minutes every day for 10 years, game changer. Give it a try. Do it for 66 days and you will never stop.
PS. Part of Orville Rogers' late passion to start jogging was his passion for Jesus Christ. He wanted to deliver Bibles to countries that did not have them in their heart language. Jogging made him more healthy to be able to do that longer. He had a WHY.
A person with a strong WHY is hard to stop! It is never too late to begin!! Get started! John Perry

  • Episode 11: Hit The Reset Button For Happiness
    Brain Science 101
Do not be conformed to the patterns of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Romans 12:2
Our thoughts affect our emotions > our emotions affect our physiological response > our physiological response is what ultimately drives our behavior and, therefore, our performance.
How you manage your thoughts is what ultimately drives your performance.
    thoughts emotions physiological response performance/results
2 questions to ask yourself when presented with a negative thought. Is it true?
    Is it helpful?
    Some stats
•47% of time your mind is not where your feet are •60-70k thoughts a day
    •74-80% negative
•3 sec – average time we hold a thought
•706 hours – avg time spent on social media in a year •4.5 months a year in working hrs, 8 hr work days
    •2700 hrs of tv
•2617 x day we touch our phone, top 10% 5400 x a day •47% of people have issues with anxiety, depression, etc. •ave person 11 hours & 6 minutes on digital media a day •10,000 hrs of video games by age of 21
    other thoughts
Mindsets determine how we show up for life, moment by moment. Thoughts are mental reps for your brain.
A mindset is a patterned way of thinking: thoughts that we have repeated so often that they are woven into our very brain matter. (affirmations) (i am/we are)
    Negative mindsets do exist.
Neuroplasticity – new pathways, neural connections can be made until the day we die. Championship mindsets can be learned and can be built.
It’s time to hit the Reset button. Our Factory Setting was on Happiness.
Then we begin to be buried on the rocks of illusions, fears, job issues, and false beliefs just to name a few.
It is time to remove the rocks and reset our setting to Happiness.
Happiness is when your perception of your events are equal to or greater than your expectations.
    Things To Remember:
You are the Boss, you get to choose your thoughts.
Spell passionate backwards to change your thoughts, lol.
Your brain produces thoughts to serve you, it they do not kick them to the curb.
The brain can only focus on 1 thought at a time, remember the spelling of the sentence backwards and counting smiley faces. Can't do it.
Everything can be seen as both good or bad. Remember the example of myself getting fired but years later it was a great blessing. The cup can always be half full.

  • Episode 9: Ryan Hawk's 10 Commandments of Excellence
Ryan Hawks 10 Commandment of Excellence
    1. WHO 1st - Your life will be measurably better or worse based on WHO you’re with. Life can be a series of transactions or you can build relationships. Transactions can give you short-term success, but great relationships make for a great life.
    2. Have a bias for action - We are who we are in practice, not in theory. The world is full of talkers. Be a doer.
    3. Wake up early - It's hard. Some days it sucks and you don't feel like it. Do it anyway. The people who put a dent in the world usually choose to do hard things.
    4. Push your edges - Excellence happens as you expand your current zone of comfort and competency. Take the improv class, do the triathlon, push beyond your current capabilities. That's where you grow.
    5. Interested > Interesting - Ask more questions than you answer. The opposite of judgment is curiosity. Lead with curiosity.
    6. Leaders can't be energy neutral. You're either adding energy to the room or taking it. Be additive. Lift a room with your attitude, optimism, and presence.
    7. Move your body - Push yourself physically. You get one body. If it fails you, nothing else will matter. Do whatever you can to take care of it.
    8. Read books - For $20, you can peer inside the heart and soul of someone who dedicated their life to a topic. It's the greatest bargain in history. I've yet to meet an excellent leader who doesn't read a lot.
    9. Lead with trust - You don't have to earn it. You have it. I've found giving trust before it's earned attracts the type of people I want to be with.
    10. Never waste an opportunity to be generous - Praise others, write thank you notes, speak kindly behind someone's back. Tell their loved ones how awesome they are. Be a good gift giver. You'll grow to love the feeling of giving more than receiving.
    11. Be grateful - Leave people, places and things better than you found them.
    12. Be the hero, not the victim - Take ownership of your success and failure. Don't blame others.
Nobody wants to hang out with excuse makers or complainers.
    13. Be a self-regulatory learner - Reflect. Pause to think. The Wright Brothers would walk out on the
sand dunes and watch birds. They mimicked their wings with their arms and thought deeply
about how to keep their flying machine afloat.
    14. Value excellence - Set high standards for yourself... And work to consistently exceed them. Try
to surround yourself with others who do the same.
    15. Choose extra work - The minimum requirements are table stakes. Choose to do more. I've rarely
met someone who leaves a dent in the world that doesn't choose extra work. Extra work =
    Passion
    16. Be easy to work with - Be responsive. Be proactive. Be kind. Think of what's needed before it's
asked. Do it. Be the type of person that others want to work with. Make it easy on them.
