Kia ora e te whānau. In 2017, Nick Ashill was completing an endeavour that he had long dreamed about. He was running across Route 66 in the United States of America to raise money for the Asthma and Respiratory Foundation. It’s often said that a journey like this will change you forever. In Nick’s case it’s true in the most serious of ways, when he was critically injured in a hit-and-run outside of Columbus, Ohio. What followed were five years of surgery, rehabilitation, and massive challenges to his physical, psychological, and emotional being. We spoke to Nick recently after his return to the USA to complete the run he started in 2017 from the spot he was struck. This is an informative, emotional, and deeply heartfelt conversation with a man whose achievement has literally changed the course of his life. Enjoy.
