Luke and Pia Winder from Tathra Place are farming in a way like no other in NSW.
Luke has created an Eco system within his 100 acres that includes rotating the animals aggressively to make use of perennial pasture growth and allows them to take advantage of pathogenic clashing between species, so no pharmaceutical inputs.
As a by-product of rebuilding topsoil, sequestering carbon, increasing organic matter and mycorrhizal fungi, within perennial systems, as a by-product of healing the land, they turn out between 3.8 – 4.2 tonnes of protein per week off 100 acres. No worming agents, no b12 shots, no immunisations, no drenching, no pesticides, herbicides no glyphosate, no fly spray in the house. This is effort!
Quail, duck, chickens, pigs, and lamb – all moved frequently to enable them to regenerate the soils.
Why are meats not charged per kilo rate on nutrient density!?
Luke shares how the catalyst to farming was when his father became ill and he became his dad’s full-time carer, sadly his father died with a lot of regrets. As he sat next to his father unwell, he stumbled upon a Joel Salatin video, where Luke declared “I reckon I can do this”, when you only have 100 acres you have to multi-species stack.
With a son with special needs that responded positively to his diet, concentration, and mood with an appropriate diet, this became the family’s focus.
Luke shares that sustaining is not enough with soil degradation, regeneration is the way of the future to essentially mimic nature to do the work in a very efficient system. Luke is so much better than just ‘free-range’.
Where is our food coming from? Do you know who is growing your food?? We all have relationships with our bankers, lawyer, dentist, etc, do you know your farmers?
Tathra Place Free-range took out the Delicious Produce 2021 unearthed next-gen produce award – when you start dealing with celebrity chefs and high-end restaurants – Peter Gilmore from Quay uses Luke’s duck in his food repertoire.
Luke touches on how the delicious awards close the gap on the lack of feedback from the consumers to the farmer, so there is no encouragement for the farmer in the paddock, which has been linked to higher suicide rates. Feedback to farmers improves quality and production methods.
Consumers in Australia, nourishing themselves and feeding themselves and their families in Australia have demanded it to be as cheap as possible which has changed the way animals are farmed. The producers can make the shift from confinement production, via the consumer demanding change with their dollar.
Happy Healthy Healing through food.
