A Negative Cycle Endangers the Ocean Ecosystem off the Shore of Taiwan
Mackerel are an excellent source of nutrients for our bodies.
Many fishing harbors in Yilan rely on mackerel as their source of income
For example, Nan-fang-ao used to have over 50 fishing boats catching over 800 tons (公噸) of mackerel a day.
However, due to global warming (全球暖化), mackerel no longer need to migrate into warmer waters in order to reproduce.
And ocean currents now bring less food for mackerels.
Since 2019, mackerel catches have been getting smaller and smaller.
There have been more and more reports of fishing boats bringing back less than one ton of mackerel.
It's an issue that has been causing a lot of concern for the fishing industry (漁業) in Yilan.
The Taiwan Fisheries Association has implemented some regulations to make sure that Taiwan's fisheries are able to stay in business and provide for the families that depend on the income from mackerel catches.
Some of these rules include banning fishing (禁止捕魚) in June to give the fish time to grow, releasing small fish, and having fishers report their catches when they return to the harbor.
The government and fisheries might be able to improve Taiwan's fishing industry soon if they work together.

A Ray of Hope for Wage Workers in Taiwan
Taiwan's government has increased full-time and part-time salaries for workers.
It's the 7th increase in the last seven years, and it's a big deal for everyone (是一件大事) because a lot needs to be considered before the government could make this decision.
The biggest factors that go into evaluating whether or not base-level pay should increase, as well as by how much, are the Consumer Price Index and the overall growth of the economy.
The Consumer Price Index, or CPI is a tool used to measure inflation
Inflation is when a currency (貨幣) loses some of its value, so the price of some things might go up.
After careful consideration and discussion, it was finally agreed that from January 1st, 2023, the base-level pay for both full-time and part-time employees will increase by 4.8-percent.
This means that the original base-level monthly salary of 25,250 NT will increase to 26,462 NT.
And the base-level hourly wage will go up from 168 NT to 176 NT.
This marks the 7th consecutive (連續的) base-level pay increase by President Tsai Ing-Wen's administration.
