We're gonna be talking about way.

Okay. Just this little word "way".

好的。 就這個小小的 "way" 。

Yeah. If you're just starting to learn English, uh, way is one of those words that you can really get a lot of mileage out of.

沒錯。 如果你剛開始學英文，"way" 是那種你可以從中學到很多東西的字。

It really packs a punch.

它真的很有力量。

It does pack a punch. So what do you think? Where should we start with this one?

它的確很有力量。你覺得呢？ 我們該從哪裡開始呢？

Well, I think a good place to start is just thinking about "way", like a road or a direction.

嗯，我想一個好的起點是先思考 "way"，像是道路或方向。

Oh, okay. So like literally a road.

喔，好。所以像是字面上的道路。

Literally a direction. Yeah, okay. So you might hear someone say, this way.

字面上的方向。 好，OK。 所以你可能會聽到有人說，這邊。

Yeah, this way, that way. Yeah, and it's really just someone pointing, you know, like if they say this way, they mean come in this direction.

對，這邊，那邊。 對，而且那只是指路，你知道，如果他們說這邊，他們的意思是朝這個方向走。

That way means go the opposite direction.

那邊的意思是往反方向走。

Pretty straightforward.

很簡單明瞭。

Yeah, okay. Yeah, super straightforward.

And then there's on the way.

然後還有 "on the way"。

Oh, on the way. Now that's a good one. On the way means that you're, you're in the process of going somewhere.

喔， on the way。 這倒是個好例子。 On the way 的意思是，你正在前往某個地方的途中。

So if I say, I'm on my way to school.

所以如果我說，我正在去學校的路上。

Uh-huh. It means I've already left my house and I'm heading to school.

Right, so you're not at school yet but you're in motion.

對，所以你還沒到學校，但你正在移動中。

Exactly. Yeah, you're on the journey, you're on the way.

On my way to work, on my way to the office.

在去上班的路上，在去辦公室的路上。

Exactly. Or if someone says, where are you? I'm on my way.

沒錯。 或是如果有人說，你在哪裡？ 我在路上了。

Yeah, that's a good one. You know, you don't have to specify where you're going and sometimes, you know, you can add in a little detail like, I'll be there in five minutes.

對，這是個好例子。 你不需要說明你要去哪裡，而且有時候，你知道，你可以加上一些細節，像是，我五分鐘後到。

Exactly, you can give them a sense of how long it'll take.

Yeah. Yeah, exactly how long it'll take. And it's not just for people, right?

That's true. You can use it for things as well.

Yeah, like cold weather is on the way.

Exactly. Like it's coming.

Yep, the cold weather is coming for us. You know, it's heading this way.

It's on its way. Be prepared.

Now we have to be careful, right? Because there's another expression that's similar to on the way, but different, which is in the way.

現在我們要小心了，對吧？ 因為還有另一個說法跟 on the way 很像，但卻不一樣，那就是 in the way。

Very different.

非常不同。

Which is in the way.

那就是 in the way。

In the way. And this one is it comes off as a little negative.

In the way。 這個聽起來就稍微有點負面。

Got like a negative connotation, you know, in the way means that something is blocking you.

帶有負面的含意，你知道，in the way 表示有東西擋住了你。

Yeah, it's an obstacle. It's an obstacle. It's preventing you from going forward.

Exactly. So imagine, uh, you're trying to walk through a door.

And somebody is standing right there.

Yeah. You could say to them, can you move? You're in the way.

Right, you're in my way. Yeah.

Yeah. Exactly.

You're in the way, blocking the path.

So on the way is about moving forward, but in the way is about like being prevented.

所以 on the way 是關於前進，而 in the way 則是關於受到阻礙。

Yeah, being stopped. Yeah. Yeah, being stopped.

是啊，被停止。是啊。是啊，被停止。

Interesting how that little word "in" completely changes the meaning.

有趣的是那個小小的 "in" 字如何完全改變了意思。

It does, right? Yeah.

它的確改變了，對吧？沒錯。

So interesting. So we talked about way as like a physical direction.

非常有趣。 所以我們說了 way 像是字面上的方向。

Yeah. You know, like going somewhere, but way can also be about how we do things, right?

你知道，像是要去某個地方，但 way 也可以是關於我們如何做事情，對吧？

That's a good way to put it, yeah, that's that.

Way can also mean like a method or a style.

Way 也可以表示一種方法或風格。

Right? Like if you say, I like to do things my way.

It means you have your own preferred method of doing something.

So it's your like your personal approach.

Personal approach, yeah, exactly your own style.

And what about when you hear the way?

那聽到 "the way" 時呢？

The way and then like a sentence after it.

"The way" 然後後面加一個句子。

Oh yeah. The way followed by a sentence or a clause. That's describing the manner in which something is.

喔對。 The way 後面跟著一個句子或子句。 那是在描述某件事情的狀態。

So for example, if you say, I don't like the way these taste.

所以舉例來說，如果你說，我不喜歡這些東西的味道。

The way they taste?

它們的味道？

Yeah. You're not just talking about the flavor, you're talking about the whole experience.

Yes, it's the whole sensation.

The whole sensation of tasting it, yeah. How it feels in your mouth.

Alright, so just to sum up. Okay. We've learned a lot about this little word way.

We have. Way can be a road, a direction like this way.

Yeah, especially if you're just starting out with English.

Right. It's just a really handy word to have.

Yeah, definitely. So for those of you learning English, try using these different ways to use way in your own conversations.
