In 2 Thessalonians 2, Paul warned the church of his day. The apostle Paul warned the church not to expect the coming of Christ in his time. He stated that it would not occur without apostasy first coming and the man of lawlessness being revealed. The advent of our Lord could only be expected after the great apostasy and the long period of the dominion of the man of lawlessness, who is also called “the mystery of iniquity,” “the son of perdition,” and “that wicked.” Speaking about the beast that emerged from the sea, Revelation says that he was given a mouth that uttered arrogances, blasphemies, and authority to act for 42 months. Revelation 13:5.
The papacy exercised great influence from 538 after Christ to 1798 after Christ, which means 42 months. But when Berthier, Napoleon’s general, took the pope captive in A.D. 1798, the prophetic period of papal supremacy ended, and Revelation’s prophecy was fulfilled: “He who leads into captivity shall go into captivity” (Rev. 13:10, NKJV). The blow to the papacy was severe but not fatal. According to Revelation 13:12, the deadly wound would be healed. Once again, the influence of the papacy would be felt worldwide.
Today, world leaders welcome the pontiff as an ambassador of the church of Rome and visit him regularly at the Vatican. In a world of unprecedented instability, the scene is set for the Roman pontiff to become the acclaimed moral leader of the world who can bring people together.
While Satan works with all his cunning to deceive, the world must be warned, and when the third Angel’s message is spread with a loud cry, minds will be fully prepared to make decisions for or against the truth.
The Bible declares that before the coming of the Lord, there will be a state of religious declension similar to that in the first centuries. “In the last days, perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, traitors, heady, high-minded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof.” 2 Timothy 3:1-5. . . . Satan will work “with all power and signs and lying wonders, and with all deceivableness of unrighteousness.” And all that “received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved,” will be left to accept “strong delusion, that they should believe a lie.” 2 Thessalonians 2:9-11
