  • 140. Actress Michelle Meredith on the "Hollywood Body Idea" and Booking The Morning Show
From booking her first costar on Black-ish to Sorority Sister on Kappa Kappa Die (2020) to a recurring role on Apple TV's The Morning Show as Lindsey Sherman, Michelle is a rising star. Our paths have crossed before (Both her roommate AND her manager have been previous guests on the show!) and I absolutely love what she has to say about consistent good work paying off in the long run. With a film coming out later this year and a SAG Award Nomination under her belt, Michelle's journey is just beginning. She walks us through the process of getting onto The Morning Show, dealing with body image in Hollywood, celebrities in fat suits, what she does in-between work, and how she takes care of her mental health.
    — The process to get to a producer's session when auditioning for The Morning Show
    — Michelle's take on acting classes, workshops, and training
    — Different body sizes in Hollywood + her personal experience as a plus-sized actress
    — Celebrities like Renée Zellweger + Sarah Paulson wearing fat suits
    — Embracing what sets us apart
    — Michelle's favorite role (so far)
    — What to do in-between bookings
    — How luck factors into success in the entertainment industry
    — Mental health + Hustle Culture
    — Patreon Questions, including: whether or not there was self-doubt after booking The Morning Show, prepping for an auditions vs. actual shoot, what surprised her most about being a recurring guest star, and growing a network

  • 139. Sending Better Emails
Let's be honest, none of us got into this business to write emails. As creatives, all we want is to create projects that we're passionate about. But, the keyword here is that this is a *business* and part of that business is sending emails. While people have different opinions about how to improve an email, I'm giving you 5 tips in this episode that I personally believe will make all the difference. With One Broke Actress alone I get so many emails asking for advice or to collaborate that I can tell you from experience how easy it is to pick out which ones are professional and which are copy/paste spam. So — before sending your next email to an agent, manager, or casting director — be sure to listen to my tried-and-true tips on how not to get lost in someone's inbox!

Ashli Pollard, my best-friend-turned-business-partner, comes to us from The Unfiltered Entrepreneur & The Daily Hype podcasts. *Patreon Study Buddies- Find out more here!*
As actors, our schedules are pretty much out of our hands. Whether it's a last-minute booking, a change to the production schedule, or a flood of self-tape audition requests, we don't really have the luxury of having a consistent routine. We have to remain flexible all the time while trying to figure out how to be productive and it is hard. To help myself out over the years, I've come up with ways to hack my productivity and stay on track. Even though my routines do change constantly, I'm excited to share with you some of what works for me right now!
    — The reason why "new" isn't always the answer
    — Why I love moving while completing a task

America Young is a director, voice performer, stunt coordinator, producer, and storyteller extraordinaire. A Sante Fe native, you may know her from directing episodes on Legacies, Roswell New Mexico, and Blindspot, or as the iconic voice of Barbie. She has worked with various studios including Warner Bros, Netflix, Lifetime and Cannal Plus. She was also awarded the 2020 Humanitarian award by UCSD for elevating women in the film industry both throughout her career and with her nonprofit, The Chimaera Project.
In this episode, I sit down with America to talk about her career, what it's like to wear so many different hats in the industry, how she prepares to direct a TV episode, what advice she has for actors, how she balances everything while raising her four-year-old daughter, and more!
    — How being a "jack of all trades and master of none" never stopped her from pursuing multiple interests
    — The rollercoaster ride that is this industry + how to survive it
    — The importance of giving kindness + respect to everyone you meet
    — The "Muffin Basket List"
    — Her current team + tips for actors on representation
    — Why directing an episode on an already-established show is akin to cooking dinner at someone else's house on Thanksgiving
    — Dummy sides, why they're given out, and why you should say "yes" to every audition
    — Consistent communication with your industry contacts without demanding anything from them
    — How your job as an actor is not to book, but to simply do the best version of the scene that you can do
    — Dealing with the gentle (but not-always-gentle) level of chaos that bubbles under the surface when you work in entertainment

  • 132. What I Did Well & Poorly in 2021
I am coming at you with a Solo Sam episode to kick off the newest season of the podcast. A big thank you to all of my longtime listeners, and a huge welcome to everyone who is new here. I wanted to start off the season by going over everything I did well & poorly in 2021 in my acting career (Something I borrowed from my good friend Ashli Pollard's The Daily Hype Podcast). Remember to take what serves you, leave what doesn't, and please don't judge the rest!
    — Four Things I Did Poorly:
Meeting and communicating with Old/New Casting Directors
Taking time to watch the content I didn't book but auditioned for
    Slowing down
Getting caught up in image overacting in auditions
    — Six Things I Did Well:
Tracking my auditions + communicating with my reps
    Staying in my proverbial lane
    Increasing my acting community
Taking liberties in auditions and not taking it so personally
Saying "no, thank you" to extra classes
    Staying present
If you want to do your own "well & poorly" for 2021, be sure to tag @onebrokeactress on Instagram so I can see it!
