  • Joe Friel; Faster After 50.
Episode 52 is an interview with Joe Friel. Joe Friel is a life-long athlete and has a masters degree in exercise science. He has trained and conferred with amateur and professional endurance athletes from a wide variety of sports since 1980. Based on this experience he cofounded TrainingPeaks.com in 1999 with son Dirk Friel and friend Gear Fisher. He currently coaches only a few athletes. He mostly focuses on training emerging top-level coaches on best practices in preparing endurance athletes for competition. This regularly takes him to coaching seminars around the world. He also consults with corporations in the sports and fitness industry and with national Olympic governing bodies worldwide. His Training Bible books for road cyclists, mountain bikers, and triathletes are used by several national sports federations to train their coaches.
Friel’s philosophy and methodology for training athletes was developed over more than 40 years and is based on his strong interest in sport science research and his experience training hundreds of athletes with a wide range of abilities. His views on matters related to training for endurance sports are widely sought and have been featured in such publications as VeloNews, Bicycling, Outside, Runner’s World, Women’s Sports & Fitness, Men’s Fitness, Men’s Health, American Health, Masters Sports, The New York Times, Triathlete, 220, and many more. Many years ago, as a mountain biker, his book ‘cyclists training bible’ was mandatory reading. His book ‘fast after 50’ breaks down societal norms that we should get old and slow. Sure, aging has an effect on the body, but there are many examples out there of older athletes smashing it. And it’s never to early to plan for that inevitable time in our future!

Hi and welcome to the Peak Endurance podcast. My name is Isobel Ross and I am the coach at Peak Endurance Coaching. Episode 51 is an interview with Sam Suke, physiotherapist at Exercise Thought. Sam obtained his undergraduate physiotherapy degree at Monash University and wrote an Honour thesis on use of isometric exercise for treating tendon pain. In 2020, Sam will complete postgraduate studies that place him in the top 8% of Australian physiotherapists. Sam’s minor thesis in this postgraduate degree studies the effect that a physiotherapist’s words have on a person’s pain and performance. Sam teaches physiotherapy students through Monash University, La Trobe University, Swinburne University of Technology and The University of Melbourne. Sam is the Vice-President of two councils for the Australian Physiotherapy Associations - the Victorian Branch Council and the Victorian Business Council. In the formative years of his career, Sam consulted through a large sports medicine clinic in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne and assisted the medical team at the Western Bulldogs (including the 2016 triple-premiership year). Sam has always delivered private consultations and group consultations (the later being a combination of pilates classes and Over60s classes).  In recent years, Sam has supervised research at Monash University and consulted privately at local aged-care facilities while maintaining a full-time clinical load. • Christie Aschwanden; author of 'Good To Go, How to Eat, Sleep and Rest Like a Champion.'
Episode 49 is an interview with Christie Aschwanden about her book ‘Good to Go, How to eat, sleep and rest like a champion’. In this book, which I really enjoyed reading, Christie looks at all the different modes of recovery and see whether the science backs them up as valid means to recover. She also tries out many of them, which I found fascinating as I could then relate them so much better to myself. I highly recommend this book if you are serious about recovery, and you should be! Are injuries ruining your enjoyment of running and hindering your performance? There is nothing worse than feeling aches and pains when you go out for a run, especially when running is normally your de-stressor or way of socialising. Utilizing the latest in technology, and with a wealth of experience, the team at Health & High Performance can assist you with all your running injury & performance needs. So to get back to enjoying your running and achieving the results you are capable of, head to www.healthhp.com.au/run A big take away for me from this interview was that the most efficacious forms of recovery involved switching the brain off and resting. Also, that she supported my belief that sleep is the best form of recovery available to athletes. So, make sure you get more sleep!! Your running will most certainly improve! Enjoy my chat with Trang! I think Trang has really shown how important it is to work on strength for runners. I also found it interesting how important she developing mobility alongside strength. I think this conversation was a great complement to my chat with Kelly Starrett. Check that one out too if you haven’t heard that yet. I would love to see all runners working on developing strength as this can only help reduce injuries and enable us to stay strong for life as well as for running. Thank you to those people who have taken the time and effort to subscribe, rate and review this podcast on apple podcasts, or on your favourite podcast player. I really do appreciate your support. Enjoy my chat with Kelly!
I think Kelly has really shown how important it is to work on mobility and range of motion. I also found it interesting how important he finds hydration and sleep, all things I know myself and many other runners can improve on. These are all things that we think we can get away with not worrying about, but they all catch up with us eventually. I do know when I don’t sleep or hydrate enough I feel it when I’m running the next day. I also think the longer I’ve been running, the more that mobility work is vitally important, especially if I want to keep running for years to come! • Matt Fitzgerald; 80/20 Running
Episode 47 is an interview with Matt Fitzgerald about his book 80/20 Running. Matt is an award-winning endurance sports journalist and bestselling author of more than 20 books on running, triathlon, fitness, nutrition, and weight loss, including Brain Training for Runners and Racing Weight. His byline appears regularly in national publications including Men's Journal, Outside, and Women's Running. Matt is an experienced running and triathlon coach and certified sports nutritionist. New research proves that runners of all experience and ability levels improve most when they do 80 percent of their training at low intensity. Yet the typical recreational runner does less than half of his or her training in this intensity zone. In his book 80/20 Running, Matt makes the case for slowing down to get faster and shows runners how to break out of the moderate-intensity rut. I believe deeply in this principle and see too many runners getting into this rut. Listen to this podcast with an open mind and reap the benefits in your running! His book 80/20 Running is on Amazon.
Matt's website is: https://mattfitzgerald.org/ I hope you now have a greater appreciation for the benefits to slowing down on many of your runs. The grey zone is to be avoided at all costs! Let me know your thoughts either in the comments on the podcast Instagram page or by DM.

  • Lanny Bassham; Olympic Gold Medalist and Mental Management System Creator.
Episode 46 is a very interesting chat with Lanny Bassham, the creator of the Mental Management system. His book 'With Winning In Mind' is an excellent book that I read a few years ago and I have found it very helpful with very actionable ideas. A little bit about Lanny from his website:
In 1972, at the Munich Germany Olympic Games, Lanny Bassham failed in his attempt to win the Gold Medal in International Rifle Shooting. He had a mental failure resulting in his taking the Silver instead. Frustrated, Lanny wanted to take a course in controlling the mind under pressure. After looking for such a seminar and not finding satisfaction, Bassham began to interview Olympic Gold Medalists to discover what they were doing differently to win.
What he discovered was truly remarkable. Bassham created a system of mental control he called Mental Management®. Within the next 6 years, Lanny Bassham dominated his sport, winning 22 world individual and team titles, setting 4 world records and winning the coveted Olympic Gold Medal in Montreal in 1976. For the past 34 years, Lanny has been teaching Mental Management® to Olympians, business owners, Fortune 500 Corporations and the elite of sport and business community.
His book defines what you need to think about to achieve mental control and how to do it. To control performance, especially in high-level competition, you need a system to help you in this process. We all say ultra running is 90% mental and the rest is in our head. It's time we all started working more on this aspect of our training. The Mental Management System will help you with this.
    Lanny's website: Mental Management
His Book: With Winning In Mind
Next week's podcast is with Matt Fitzgerald in regards to his book 80/20 Training. I'm sure you'll find it really interesting.

  • Kate Smyth: Sports Naturopath
Kate Smyth is an Australian marathon runner.  She set her personal best time of 2:28:51, by finishing second at the 2008 Nagano Olympic Commemorative Marathon in Japan.
At age thirty-five, she competed at 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, where she successfully finished the race with a time of 2:36:10. Kate also ran in the marathon at the 2006 Commonwealth Games, coming in seventh place.
Taken from her website, athlete sanctuary; it says that Kate developed her passion for natural medicine during her career as an elite endurance athlete competing in the women’s marathon for Australia at the Olympic and Commonwealth Games and becoming one of the all-time fastest women in Australia. Her journey was not without challenges and she required the assistance of many holistic health practitioners from around the world, to overcome and manage multiple injuries, chronic fatigue and coeliac’s disease to progress from fun runner to Olympian in just eight years. She still runs most days albeit retired from serious competition.
During her sporting career Kate identified the need for an holistic service tailored to the unique requirements of athletes and set about creating an innovative sports naturopathy service which offers natural, effective and non-invasive treatment options to athletes.
Kate came onto the podcast to discuss the nutritional issues directly related to runners. Enjoy!
So, what did you think? I was surprised to learn that 2 litres is the minimum you should drink! I thought I was doing so well to drink 1 and ½!! I need to work on that one obviously! What did you learn? Please let me know! Also, if you got value out of this podcast and would like me to interview Kate again, email or DM me or comment on the podcast post your questions and I will try to get those covered!
I really enjoy creating this podcast, but of course it is truly a labour of love. The only payment I receive is your support in the form of subscriptions, ratings and reviews! The time I put in and the cost of the equipment I use is all mine, so I truly appreciate when you show that I am giving you some value. Thank you all.
I am in the process of accepting new athletes into my coaching programs. If you are interested in getting some quality structured coaching, I have limited spaces available. Email me on [email protected] DM me on socials.

  • Nicole Kew: An elite athlete's story of rhabdomyolysis (commonly known as Rhabdo).
Episode 42 is dedicated to a particularly important topic that can affect some runners; Rhabdomyolysis, more commonly known as Rhabdo. It is a condition caused by damage to skeletal muscle. In sports, the muscle damage happens with excessively strenuous exercise, but it can also be caused by crushing injuries to the body, some medications, toxins, or infections. When the muscle is damaged, potentially toxic contents within the muscle cells (creatine phosphokinase or CPK, myoglobin, potassium, phosphate, uric acid) are released into the blood stream. In small amounts, the body is typically capable of filtering and clearing these toxins. If the injury is severe enough to cause a massive release of toxins, the body may be unable to adequately clear them. These toxins can cause irregular heartbeats, kidney damage, and, in severe cases, death.
Signs and symptoms of rhabdomyolysis include:
    Classic Triad
    Muscle pain (myalgias)
    Muscle weakness
    Dark-coloured urine
    Other:
    Decreased urination
    Fever
    Malaise
    Nausea or Vomiting
    Confusion and/or agitation (delirium)
My friend, Nicole Kew came down with Rahbdo following her participation in the 24 hour world championships in France in 2019. This is her story.
What a scary story! It would be good for everyone to stay on top of their hydration and urine out-put. Nicole told me later that the doctors had said to her that if she had waited another 24 hours she would very likely have died. Scary stuff.
The doctors haven't been able to pinpoint anything specific that caused her rhabdo. The Sports Physician called it 'a perfect storm' of small things that on their own were insignificant but combined may have all contributed. e.g. Nicole could have possibly picked up an infection/virus before the race, it was slightly warmer weather than expected, she may not have fully hydrated properly prerace, the hard surface and twisty/windy nature of the course could have taken its toll on her quads. Having a hard massage on the quads during the race probably sped up the muscle breakdown and release of the myoglobin into the blood stream (the muscle breakdown was already occurring and then rubbing the quads added to the trauma rather than relieving it), the flight home 2 days after the race would also have accelerated the dehydration process as she wasn't able to keep any fluids down and flights are dehydrating anyway. There wasn't any one thing that can be blamed. Other causes are if you have taken certain medications so they did blood tests in hospital to rule out NSAIDS as this is often a contributor but she hadn't taken any during the race so this wasn't a factor and the blood tests ruled out medications as an issue. It can also often be undertraining or over exertion, but Nicole was fully prepared, had ticked all the boxes in training. This was her 8th 24-hour event so her body and legs are used to the repetitive nature of a looped course. Nicole also had to have extensive testing with a Sports Cardiologist after her hospital admission to rule out any potential cardiac issues either pre or post race. So it's all a bit of a mystery but I guess it goes to show that you can do all the right things in training and during the race, follow the same nutrition and hydration plan as you have multiple times before and things can still go wrong.

I hope you enjoy our conversation!
I believe this kind of virtual run really brings the running community together. This is so important at this time when we all can feel so isolated. It was a relief to hear that restrictions are now starting to ease. The thought of being able to run in a group of 10 is so exciting!
Its funny how things being taken away from you really make you appreciate everything we took for granted. I was talking with a friend the other day. We always talk about going away for a hiking weekend, we have just never actually gotten around to it! We decided that we are no longer going to be ‘gunnas’, we’re actually going to do the things we plan! Have you been a ‘gunna’ with the races you want to do? With getting a coach to help you reach your potential? Positive change is possible! Contact me via email [email protected] or DM me on socials.
