    As the war continues to widen in Lebanon, it's estimated that 1.2 million people have already been displaced from their homes. The risk of a humanitarian crisis is real as people continue to be forced to flee, notably from the south of the country.  Many are now left living on the streets of Beirut, which has itself also become unsafe amid Israeli bombardment.     Gaza has become "a much darker reality than anyone ever thought possible". That's the description from a spokesman for the United Nations Children's Fund, UNICEF. James Elder, who was in Gaza himself last week, told us how the people of the enclave are now able to live on just 15 percent of the land. They have lost their homes, their livelihoods and often many family members and friends. As the threat of widespread disease continues to rear its head, Elder spoke to us in Perspective.

    The cousin of a slain Israeli hostage has spoken to FRANCE 24 about how Israel should have put her life and the lives of the other hostages at the top of the agenda right from the start. Gil Dickmann says the Israeli government did not do that, and as result they were lost. His cousin Carmel Gat was killed by Hamas at the end of August, along with five others. Gil Dickmann also called for a deal to be reached urgently to save the remaining hostages. He spoke to us in Perspective.

  • Conservationist Patricia Wright on finding a new rainforest in Madagascar

    A world-renowned naturalist and environmentalist, who is credited with discovering a new species of lemur, has spoken to FRANCE 24 about her latest discovery. Dr Patricia Wright has found a 14-square-kilometre tropical rainforest in a remote part of Madagascar. She has been working with a team of scientists who have been documenting its natural wonders. Their work has been captured in a new documentary that's to be shown on French television next week. Dr Wright is the founder and executive director of the Institute for the Conservation of Tropical Environments and Centre ValBio, which is a world-renowned research campus in Madagascar. She spoke to us in Perspective.

    A writer who grew up in Jamaica under the strict supervision of her Rastafarian father has spoken to FRANCE 24 about her ambition to write about what happened to her and ensure people don't simply think about the picture-postcard image of her country. Safiya Sinclair's book "How to Say Babylon" has now been translated into French, under the title "Dire Babylon". In it, she tells of her childhood ruled by her father's strict patriarchal views and his aim to ensure she remained protected from Babylon, or more Western influences. She spoke to us in Perspective about her new life as a writer and poet.

    A woman who captured on film Brazil's presidential election and the subsequent coup attempt as supporters of far-right former president Jair Bolsonaro stormed the National Congress has spoken to FRANCE 24 about how her film has become a real historical document.
