There are 2 sides to playing pickleball: resisting stress & imparting stress. This week we dive into stress resistance. The better you resist stress, the less likely you are to make errors when you play – the less likely to miss a shot. You become “the wall” out there, resisting everything thrown your way.
Chances are you will win more rallies simply because you are missing less shots. Once you improve your stress resistance, you will feel much more confident and comfortable out there. And then you can switch your focus to imparting stress: the subject of next week’s podcast.
In the riff I share with you some ideas about how to deal with the tennis players out there who are upset about pickleball players playing on “their” courts.

Keeping your eye on the ball is more than just watching the pickleball. It also means differentiating what matters from what matters not so much. A good way of thinking about it is through marginal advantages. In this episode we share with you how to use marginal advantages while you play and while you work on your game. Get the biggest "bang for your buck."
We also help you with your inner-speak. Our guest, Martin Gutierrez @theforehandguy, shares with us the concept of being your own coach. By using this approach, you will strengthen the positive speak in your mind and diminish the negative talk that we all suffer from on the court.

In this week's episode we talk about quattro (4) tips to help your journey. Number one is perspective: go out to the court with gratitude in your heart. You'll feel better and play better.

2. Your Machine: You need your body to perform its best if you are going to play your best. Start doing 1 thing today for your body. Or add something new if you already do body things. You'll like what you get out of it.
3. Losing is not failure: We can all learn something from Giannis Antetokounmpo's response to a reporter's question about failure. Let's reframe our faulty relationship with "failure."
4. Emotion: Pickleball elicits a range of feelings - physical and emotional. I share with you my story from the Open. It is ok to cry about pickleball :).

If you can STOP chasing winners, you will win more. What??? Yes. When you chase winners, you make more mistakes. When you make more mistakes, you lose more points. Simple as that.
Stick with the program: make less errors - and you will win more rallies (and games). One powerful way to do this is by going for less winners. Stop playing high risk pickleball and you will play better.
In the riff, I share with you parting notes about the 2023 US Open tournament and what I learned from playing it.

Winning. Losing. They are both natural parts of our sport. Perspective is something you can control. Gain it, and you will feel better, play better, and enjoy a healthier relationship with Pickleball. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/pickleballtherapy/support

"Wait, I have a super computer?" you may ask. You 100% have one. And it is powerful. Makes ChatGPT (and all computers or programs) green with envy. There is a good chance, though, that you are not using it to its fullest capabilities when you are playing pickleball.
One example: where are you aiming your serve? Specifically. Height over the net? Specifically. If you are not providing your super computer with specific instructions you cannot be surprised when it does not do what you want. It, after all, had no clear directions.
You can change this by starting to give your super computer (your brain, of course) clear directives. Each shot. You will play better pickleball.
In the riff, I share with you a personal story to help us gain context and perspective.

Partner poaching. It's part of the game - when done appropriately. But it can also be used a tool by one player to try and play an oversized role during the game. It is a particular problem in rec play when one player believes themself to be the superior player - often a misperception. In this episode we cover the basics of poaching appropriately as well as how to handle things when your partner is all up in your space. We also give you tips to avoid being that player
In the riff, I share with you some tips to avoid distractions. They are costing you points out on the pickleball court.

Many players fall into a pitfall of their own making. Specifically, players think that they need this shot or that shot. And that the framework of the game is secondary. Nothing could be further from the truth. Think of it like this: you know how to move all the pieces on a chessboard but you do not know the way the game is constructed. Not a very good way to play chess right? Same thing happens on a pickleball court.
In the riff, I share with you some recent occurrences and look at how maintaining perspective can avoid things from spiraling downwards out there.
Hope to see some of you in class.

Ever use GPS to find your way somewhere new to you? Pretty helpful right? Otherwise, you are stopping at gas stations and asking passers by where this road is or that. And forget about it if you are using a map and get turned around North to South or East to West. Be driving in circles all day.
GPS alleviates all that headache and gets you where you are going with amazing accuracy - in terms of time and location.
Works the same in pickleball. If you have a GPS system that can get you from Point A (where you are now) to Point B (where you are headed), you will save endless time and headache getting there. Plus, you can check yourself as you travel to make sure you are on the right path - the shortest course to your future pickleball self. In this episode I discuss the concept of a Pickleball GPS System for you.
In the riff, I share with you a common fallacy we engage in (no criticism as the thought is only natural): what is the "new" thing I need to improve my game? The answer is generally: nothing, you just need to get better with the "old" things.
