  • 018-What I wish I'd known when I started Project Management

Oh, this was a fun one :-) Kate and I share a happy hour with you as we think back on all the things we wish we knew when we started project management. We trade lessons-learned back and forth - and we're sure you can identify with some of these!

Warning in advance - audio quality isn't the best in my kitchen, and we do digress a bit, but it's a fun listen and there are some really good nuggets in here. Enjoy!

  • A05-PM Appetizer – Weekly Roll-up Scheduling

How do you make sense of (and get your stakeholders to understand) a 200-line project plan? Or how about a program with 6 workstreams, each with 200 line project plans? How do you make a useful schedule for a smaller schedule, maybe for a personal project that you can share with "non-pm's" that they can make sense of?

This week we discuss using a "weekly roll-up" method for viewing schedules. It doesn't necessarily replace your 200-line plan, but it is a very useful way for summarizing and reporting a schedule – check it out!

  • 017-Working with Creatives

Creative projects can be very fulfilling and provide tremendous value to any organization. But, they can also be very susceptible to scope creep. For those of us used to dealing in data-driven GANTT charts and Risk reports, how can we effectively approach a project with creative deliverables? Especially if we are not sure what those deliverables are supposed to look like? And how do we get objective results when it depends on subjective feedback?

Today's guest, Shawn Hardy, will walk us through his process for approaching a project as a creative, and help us understand how to succeed in a Creative project. Proof in point: he was the designer for our amazing new PM Happy Hour website!

    Our amazing guest, Shawn Hardy:

For the past 17 years Shawn has worked with hundreds of clients ranging from mom-and-pop's in Phoenix, to startups in San Francisco, to global corporations in Boston. Shawn believe that ideas, design, and marketing should always motivate and inspire people. Working closely with business owners, other marketers, and creative teams to co-create effective and engaging work is what he is passionate about. His work takes a wide range of deliverables including brand identities, interactive websites, print, advertising campaigns, traditional marketing, TV, content marketing, video, and motion graphics. Beyond his career as a creative, he lives an active life which includes triathlons, running, and cycling. Shawn keeps his family and dogs close by, always with the end goal of simply enjoying life.

  • 014-Condition RED! Breaking bad news to your stakeholders

Everyone has something go wrong on their projects at some point. As much as we dread breaking the news, how we communicate these problems to our stakeholders can have a greater impact on our project and long term business relationships than the problems themselves.

In today's episode we share our own horror stories about project calamities, and share some lessons learned and tips for communicating with our stakeholders and sponsors through these issues. Do it right, and you can come out the other side with an even stronger relationship.

BTW, yes, we are talking about Christmas in this episode J It's one we've been looking forward to publishing for a long time!

  • 013-Don't guess! Plan your project with SCIENCE using Monte Carlo analysis

Although touched on in the PMBOK, most of us have little exposure to Monte Carlo analysis – which is a shame! Monte Carlo analysis can add a new level of credibility to our planning when the stakes are high by backing it with real science and statistical models. In this episode, we demystify this tool, discuss its benefits, when it is appropriate, and why math is our friend J From mining to professional services, contact centers and orbital battle stations, we discuss how Monte Carlo can help you run your business.

We also discuss photon versus proton torpedoes.

Our special guest is Luc Vandamme, who has been in the mining industry for more than 25 years and is now a Senior Director in his organization's Enterprise Project Management Office. Luc's career has taken him from mining technology research and development to business optimization, organizational development, and now to project management. Luc has a Civil and Geological Engineering degree from the University of Louvain in Belgium (he is NOT related to Jean-Claude!) and a Ph D in rock mechanics from the university of Toronto. And of course he knows Monte Carlo simulations inside and out!
