  • 117. Sunday Scaries #13 - If Life Is So Busy That You Are Rushing Through The Task At Hand, You Need This

When we still have SOOOO much to do at home, it makes it REALLY hard to go to work and FOCUS.  I am telling you, it is all about the SYSTEMS.  I am starting a business, trying to take care of myself, freshly engaged, dog mom, back in school for my undergrad, and work 12-hour long shifts as an RN in a very demanding profession. If we create systems, we will know that we have time to get it all done.  Or, we will stay in this overwhelm, leading to burnout.

    Self Care Tip:
“Laughter - is the best.  I grew up making my family laugh all the time…a child on average laughs about 300 x a day… as compared to an adult who on average probably only laughs only 17 times a day… make yourself laugh.”

  • 115. Sunday Scaries #12: Why are you seeking external happiness?

We all seek external happiness.  But there comes a point where we have to realize when enough is enough.  I am NOT saying we will be perfect (I struggle often with this myself and have a group of good friends to remind me when I am doing it) - but I AM saying we have to try to do better.  Try to recognize it earlier.

  • 114. Nutrition Matters To Create A Life We Are Obsessed With!! - with Crystal Orozco

You all are hearing a friend from high school bring us in on her journey into becoming a diabetic educator and nutritionist.  She is an AMAZING, KIND, and GENEROUS human who I am SO PROUD to have gotten to feature on this podcast.  You know, burnout is such a cycle.  It can cause us to eat poorly, leading to less energy, leading to more decisions that cause the cycle to repeat.  If we can focus on ONE of the pillars of our health, we can actually CHANGE OUR LIVES!!!

Jumping into ALL THE THINGS can cause us to burnout again.  Like, we can't accomplish good nutrition, sleep, exercise, relationships. etc, etc, all at one time.  But we CAN use these tools we are given through resources like this to create a life that goes on to serve us in many ways.  Start with just ONE TOOL, and go from there, stacking habits, until you have created that amazing life.

Hola! My name is Crystal Orozco, I am a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and Certified Diabetes Educator. I was born and raised in Cloverdale, California. I am a first-generation student and a proud daughter of immigrant parents from Mexico. I attended the University of California, Davis where I obtained a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Clinical Nutrition, and a minor in Chicano Studies. I became fascinated with nutrition and preventative health when I battled with chronic headaches during college and personally experienced the impact nutritious foods had in my own body. I decided to pursue a degree in dietetics to education not only myself, but my family, and community on the importance of eating real nutritious foods. After graduating, I received my Registered Dietitian Nutritionist license through California State University, Sacramento. After working in the clinical space for many years, I decided to open up my own nutrition consulting company and Vida Nutrition Consulting, LLC was co-founded! Vida Nutrition Consulting offers bilingual 1:1 individual and corporate nutrition consulting services.  I hope to be a leader in the field of dietetics to inspire other Latinx Registered Dietitians and to continue empowering others to adopt healthier eating habits, better understand their bodies, and feel their best!

    Episode Quote:
Nutrition is ONE component..mental health/burnout is another, sleep, &exercise... there are SO many components to a healthy lifestyle.  Start by adding balance into one!!

  • 112. Healthcare Burnout and A Crazy Story About Emotional Resiliency with Megan Daley

Dr. Megan: Life & Burnout Coach, Doctor of Physical Therapy, Educator, Author, Speaker who is helping healthcare workers get out of the burnout rut they often face.

When asked, Who is Megan?? She replies:
I am a seasoned physical therapist, Olympic weightlifter, overcomer, and freedom catalyst who believes in 2 major things: (1) movement is medicine and (2) everyone deserves to live the life of their dreams. Beyond the physical movement that I’ve been known for for a decade, I implement pivotal emotional and mindset exercises in all of my offerings through Move on the Daley to help driven adults flourish. I am passionate about paying it forward and helping female professionals discover who they eff they are and create healthier management strategies pursuing their current field or exploring new paths they’ve only dreamt of. I am a "free bird" who loves travel, food, adventures in the outdoors, my fiancé, Andris, and Corgi, Jinx. Currently living in Scottsdale, AZ, but catch me on the slopes all next winter!

I recently met Megan at an event out of state, after having been at other events together but not bumping into each other.  Let me tell you- she is an amazing individual with just as amazing sense of style!! Within minutes of meeting her, I KNEW she was a great guest speaker on the podcast to come in and provide SO MUCH value!!!

Burnout is near and dear to my heart, as you know, and she's going to give it to us straight up!! What does it look like, why you are more burned out than you think, and how to get out of it.

On her way home from the event, she had a scare that I pray I never have to go through.  I asked her if she would share her vulnerable story with us, and how she got through it differently now that she has practiced many ways to regulate her nervous system.  It is quite a story!

    Episode Quote:

“Practicing the tools that I learned…I want to then give the tools to people…in order to build up the (emotional) resiliency to function in a crisis situation and be able to calm my nervous system down enough to take action.  "

She said after the traumatic event she actually felt the need to move… THIS IS a huge TOOL for you to learn about!!!!  A way to “shake” trauma off.  “Move in whatever way feels natural to you” because the energy needs to move through your body.

    Self Love Tip:

Schedule yourself into your calendar FIRST - and don’t move those blocks

  • 110. Healing From Compassion Fatigue and Burnout with Amanda DeLaney of Financial FixHer

Amanda DeLaney is the founder of Financial FixHer - a podcast and community that aims to empower women to unburden themselves from complicated finances. She actually takes a pause here from money talk and lets us in on a very vulnerable time in her life.  She is in the midst of a family situation that is causing her some burnout and letting us in as she begins her recovery.

I want to POINT OUT through this episode that burnout can hit ANYONE, ANYTIME.  It is NOT just healthcare workers who struggle with moral injury and compassion fatigue.  Burnout also comes from changes in our life that cause us to experience a state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion caused by CHRONIC STRESS. It is characterized by feelings of emotional exhaustion, cynicism or detachment from life/work, and a reduced sense of accomplishment or efficacy. Burnout can affect people in any walk of life, any profession, and can be caused by a variety of factors including workload, lack of control, interpersonal conflicts, and poor work-life balance.

Burnout can affect people in any profession, NOT just healthcare workers. Here are some common causes of burnout for people in other professions:

    1. Workload: Having too much work and feeling overwhelmed can lead to burnout. This can happen when there is a high volume of work, tight deadlines, or not enough support or resources to get the job done.
    2. Lack of control: Feeling like you have no control over your work or the direction of your career can contribute to burnout. This can happen when there is a lack of autonomy or decision-making power in your role.
    3. Monotony: Doing the same thing day in and day out can be tedious and draining, leading to burnout. This can happen in jobs that lack variety or creativity.
    4. Interpersonal conflict: Conflicts with coworkers or managers can be stressful and draining, especially if they are not resolved or if they persist over time.
    5. Lack of recognition: Feeling undervalued or underappreciated for your work can lead to burnout. This can happen when there is a lack of feedback or recognition for your contributions.
    6. Poor work-life balance: Working long hours or being expected to be available outside of work hours can lead to burnout. This can happen when there is a lack of boundaries between work and personal life.

Healing from burnout is IMPERATIVE because It can cause symptoms such as fatigue, irritability, anxiety, and depression. Burnout can also lead to decreased productivity, poor quality work, and increased absenteeism.

A few reasons why healing from burnout is crucial:

    1. Physical health: Burnout can cause physical symptoms such as exhaustion, headaches, muscle tension, and sleep disturbances. If left unaddressed, burnout can increase the risk of developing health problems such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and depression.
    2. Mental health: Burnout can also have a negative impact on mental health. It can lead to feelings of anxiety, depression, and irritability. Left unaddressed, burnout can lead to more serious mental health problems such as anxiety disorders, depression, and substance abuse.
    3. Work performance: Burnout can affect work performance, leading to decreased productivity, poor quality work, and increased absenteeism. This can have a negative impact on an individual's career, as well as on the success of the organization they work for.
    4. Relationships: Burnout can also affect personal relationships, leading to conflict and stress at home. This can have a further negative impact on an individual's mental health and well-being.
