This may be difficult to hear, but one in every five college freshmen must take a remedial reading class. Two thirds of fourth graders last year failed to read at the proficient reading level. And 42 million American adults are functionally illiterate. In this episode, Dr. Erin Elmore speaks with Claire Rubman. Claire is a cognitive developmental psychologist. She earned her PhD from Stony Brook University and has taught in classrooms for over 30 years. She has personally seen the success and failure of reading comprehension and in November 2022 Claire published the book This May Be Difficult to Read, But You Really Should (For Your Child’s Sake) which addresses the underlying problem of poorly acquired reading comprehension skills in children of all ages. When we learn to think as a child thinks and read as a child reads, we can have a better understanding of what's going on. What we can do better and how we can fix this reading failure chain that seems to have evolved over time.
