Jesus came to preach a message of abundance: There is more wine, more loaves and more fish. There is peace that surpasses all understanding, mercy in our time of need and grace upon grace for anyone who wants it. And above all, there is an abundance of love, overflowing from a well that never runs dry.

Many of those who breached the United States Capitol did so not in spite of their Christian faith, but because of it. Just look at video or pictures from the riot and you’ll see…
- Avowed white supremacists carrying the Christian flag
- People wearing “In God we trust” shirts as they shove police officers to the ground
- A huge banner bearing the name of Jesus hung outside the Capitol by a group of insurrectionists after they broke in.
Wednesday's violent, insurrectionist riot was not an aberration; it was a revelation. It may not reflect who we hope to be, but it is who we are right now. We cannot get where we want to go without telling the truth about where we are. It's time for truth-telling.

Jesus wasn’t just born to die. He was born to live and love and serve and embody the Kingdom of God on earth as it is in heaven.

The Way of Jesus is so much more than something you believe, it’s something you do. The Way of Jesus is so much more than something you intellectually assent to, it’s a whole new way of living. Knowing about Jesus is not the same thing as following Jesus.

Oppressive religion blinds us to our own sin by shifting the focus onto the much lesser shortcomings of others.

Allowing the love of God to work in us and then move through us to humanity, is the call of every Christian. It was radical enough to start a revolution in 1st century and it’s radical enough to start one in the 21st century too.

Peacemaking is not standing in the uncontroversial middle trying to placate everyone. Peacemaking is not calling for unity while refusing to deal with marginalization in our communities. That’s peacekeeping.
Peacemaking is standing for truth, justice, and equity for all people, no matter the cost. For us as Christians, the choice between peacekeeping and peacemaking is clear:
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” Jesus (Matthew 5:9)

Christian political engagement means so much more than voting. It means advocating and mobilizing. It means fighting against corruption and injustice. And most of all, it means fulfilling our Gospel imperative to care for the poor, the oppressed, and the marginalized.

Jesus loves unity, but he hates uniformity.
