An American activist in the civil rights movement best known for her role in the Montgomery Bus Boycott. On December 1, 1955, she rejected an order to relinquish her seat in the colored section of a bus to a white passenger after the "whites only" section was full. Her act of defiance became an important symbol of the civil rights movement. Although widely honored for her act, she also was fired from her job and received death threats for years afterwards.
