George Mathew Fernandes who was elected nine times to the Lok Sabha, died on Tuesday in New Delhi. He was 88. A veteran parliamentarian who served several times as a Union Cabinet Minister, holding portfolios such as communications, industry, and railways, besides defence. Professor Ramu Manivannan, head of Department of Politics and Public Administration of the University of Madras, outlines George Fernandes’s contribution to Indian politics, social justice and Eelam issue.

Australians have less than a day ((deadline: 31 January)) to opt out of the federal government's new MyHealth Record scheme. Supporters of the scheme say having an online summary of people's key health information will help them get better treatment. But opponents say the scheme has too many security and privacy risks.

Two of the men who helped rescue the 12 boys and their football coach from flooded caves in Thailand last year have been named the 2019 Australians of the Year.

They and a raft of others were honoured at a ceremony at the National Arboretum ((ar-bor-REE-tum)) in Canberra.
