Many Australians would say, "if you want to understand the Australian culture, you should watch the movie, The Castle (1997, dir. Rob Sitch)". The film depicts the everyday life of an ordinary Australian family, their naivety, their bonding and their dry humour. The movie touches upon some social justice issues also. Moreover, The Castle popularised many one-liners, such as 'tell him he is dreaming' and 'it is the vibe of the thing', that are commonly used in everyday conversations even now. With that in mind, it is fair to say that The Castle can be an introductory cultural learning for those who want to be familiar with the nuances of Australian culture and language. In this episode on Australian Cinema, Dr Dhamu Pongiyannan presents an analysis of this iconic Australian film for SBS Tamil listeners.
