We heard stories about people attempting to reach Australia by boats. Many refugees/ asylum seekers were stranded in midst of the ocean during this type of perilous sea journey. Hundreds of refugees landed in Indonesia, and many refugees got deported even after they successfully reached Australian territory. Australia’s new Prime Minister Scott Morrison reiterated recently that his government’s determination to continue the strict border policy to stop boats.

International students are being encouraged to study at regional universities rather than in major cities under a Federal Government plan to ease population growth in Australia's capital cities.

But international-student advocates warn more incentives are needed to make it a viable option.

Spectacular images of recent volcanic eruptions in Hawaii are a little disheartening – especially given news reports suggesting there is a sleeping volcano under Melbourne that could awaken and erupt at any moment. Dr Annamalai Mahizhnan, Geo-Scientist in Western Australia explains more about it.

The Federal Government is coming to the financial aid of Australia's strawberry industry, following a number of needle contaminations. Two states have now announced a financial reward to help find the culprits, and strict new  export rules have been introduced. Maheswaran Prabaharan has the story in Tamil, written by Charlotte Lam for SBS News.
