Have you considered installing underfloor heating in your renovation, but thought it was too expensive to install and costly to run? I am guilty of having some preconceived ideas about underfloor heating. That is why I invited Luke Chant from Hotwire Heating to chat to me about the ins and outs of underfloor heating.
He talked me through what underfloor heating actually is; how much it costs to install; and the actual running costs to heat your home. He raved about underfloor heating creating a nice gentle warmth that heats the whole room. He said:
“As long as your house is well insulated, and well put together, then floor heating will heat the room quite nicely.”
Installing underfloor heating in your bathroom comes with some great benefits:
“You don't have to clean your bathroom as often because it's not [going to get] mouldy. There's none of that residue left over from water in the room. So you're getting a nice warm bathroom, but you're also getting a clean, healthier bathroom.”
If you are concerned about the safety of underfloor heating in your home, Luke put those fears to rest. They have systems built in during installation to detect damage to the wires. If the wire somehow gets damaged after a successful installation, they have a high-tech way of detecting the fault so that it can be repaired with minimal fuss.
I learnt a lot from my chat with Luke. Click play if you are interested in learning more about underfloor heating.

If you follow our She Renovates podcast you will be familiar with the strategy we came up with to give our children a leg up in the property market without giving them handouts – The Avocado Smash Strategy. We pool our resources with each of our kids, do a renovation together and split the profits.
Mary Nieuwland has used The Avocado Smash strategy to help her daughter, Layla, break into the property market. She is also a successful Airbnb owner, and mentored some of our other women on several other projects. She has become the go-to person in her area. She is a legend in our community.

At The School of Renovating our focus is to uplift women through our Wonder Women program to become stellar renovators. I recently chatted to one of our Wonder Women, Nicole, and her husband and partner, Jay. I have the pleasure of sharing with you that they have successfully completed their first for-profit ‘team renovation’ in Wollongong. It is inspiring to see their success working as a team!
Our purpose at The School of Renovating is to empower women to take control of their lives through renovating. The reality, though, is that it can also involve the input of a few good men. Many of us do have good men in our lives and their support often gives us wings so we can fly.

A good handyman can make your job so much easier. He has a critical role to play in your renovation project. You need someone who is reliable, time-efficient, cost-effective and has a great attitude.
I learn something from every renovating project I do. In the job I have just completed, The Newcastle Project, I learned the true value of having a good handyman.
In this case we had problems nailing down our carpenter as a team member. Our handyman stepped up to the plate and helped us out.

Managing your costs in a reno project is critical. It doesn’t matter whether you are renovating your family home, an investment property or a property you are planning to flip for a profit. If you lose track of your costs, you could end up spending significantly more than you had planned to.
There are three types of costs involved in a renovation project:
Holding cost
Labour costs
Material costs
The goal is to produce a quality renovation for the best price possible. The labour costs are by far the biggest costs involved in renovations, followed by the cost of your materials.
In this episode I'm going to discuss my ten tips to help you keep your labour and material costs to a minimum.
