Should You Have A Partner in Your Landscaping Business? My Thoughts

Listen Later

Business partnerships are common in most successful organizations. However, we must remember that we should never enter into a partnership for the wrong reasons before reaching a certain level of success. Although I don't necessarily have a business partner, establishing a partnership can be very similar to marrying someone - it can be great when done right. Still, it can also be awful without transparency and trust. So in this episode, I will be sharing with you some insights and resources that I guarantee will help unravel what you need to learn regarding partnerships. So join me to discuss what makes or breaks a successful business relationship.

“There has to be very clearly defined and written out and mutually agreed upon plus regularly revisited doctrine or maxims or principles. It has to be put together on a timeline that says ‘this is where we want to end up.”

 – Keith Kalfas

Why do you have to listen to today’s episode.

01:35 – Gino Wickman’s books are of great help. Start by reading “Traction,” where you can get hyper-specific tips on the how-tos of business partnership.

02:44 – Also, read the book “Own Your Own Corporation.” This will help you avoid engaging in a partnership for the wrong reasons.

04:12 – Aside from Traction, Gino Wickman has this book called “Get a Grip.” Here, you’ll learn about the importance of a visionary-integrator relationship.

06:17 – Have a partnership rooted in trust, transparency, and effort. Codependency negatively could ruin all things you’ve worked hard for.

10:48 – True partnership’s essence occurs between alpha people who can be productive through transparent conversations.

13:24 – Alpha people actually care. It’s just that different people communicate in different ways. Make sure you have a mutual agreement. Know where you both want to end up.

Key Takeaways

“A lot gets lost in translation when you’re just dealing with verbal and a handshake. Things have to be discussed on the front end and from a place of trust, but then behind has to be some binding agreement.”

“A lot of times, when people are trying to partner up with other people, they’re doing it for the wrong reasons; hence, being afraid of being able to do it completely on their own, that they need somebody else that’s ride or die with them because they’re afraid to take the journey by themselves. But most of the people I met that become really successful take that lonely journey by themselves, and they step into the fear of the unknown.”

“When there’s a partnership where you need each other or you’re codependent in a negative way, just think about how that’ll exacerbate in the long run. It will be a frickin’ nightmare. It’ll be something that is not fun at all, and you’re stuck in it.”

“Different people communicate in different ways. If you have a partnership, especially in a business, you got to be ready to deal with that person on a level behind all the layers of the job if you want the business to move forward. Because sometimes, it’s not about the business moving forward; it’s just about somebody feeling comfortable, their ego, what they want, or what’s going on in their personal life.”
