Mark Twain’s work on Joan of Arc is titled in full “Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc, by the Sieur Louis de Conte.” De Conte is identified as Joan’s page and secretary. For those who’ve always wanted to “get behind” the Joan of Arc story and to better understand just what happened, Twain’s narrative makes the story personal and very accessible. The work is fictionally presented as a translation from the manuscript by Jean Francois Alden, or, in the words of the published book, “Freely Translated out of the Ancient French into Modern English from the Original Unpublished Manuscript in the National Archives of France.”It was originally published as a serialization in Harper’s Magazine beginning in 1895 and later published in book form in 1896. However the Harper’s editors decided to cut 12 chapters that describe much of Joan’s Great Trial, saying the chapters were not suitable for serialization since, “They will not bear mutilation or interruption, but must be read as a whole, as one reads a drama.” This recording contains the complete text! De Conte is a fictionalized version of Joan of Arc’s page Louis de Contes, and provides narrative unity to the story. He is presented as an individual who was with Joan during the three major phases of her life – as a youth in Domremy, as the commander of Charles’ army on military campaign, and as a defendant at the trial in Rouen. The book is presented as a translation by Alden of de Conte’s memoirs, written in his later years for the benefit of his descendants. Twain based his descriptions of Joan of Arc on his daughter, Susy Clemens, as he remembered her at the age of seventeen. Twain said, “I like Joan of Arc best of all my books; and it is the best; I know it perfectly well. And besides, it furnished me seven times the pleasure afforded me by any of the others; twelve years of preparation, and two years of writing. The others needed no preparation and got none.”

Hailed more as a literary masterpiece than an accurate account of historical facts, The History of England from the Accession of James the Second by Thomas Babington Macaulay is an admirable mix of fact and fiction. Modern day readers may find much that is offensive and insensitive in this five volume work which covers a particular period in the long and eventful history of Britain. However, it is certainly a book that leads the reader on to further research into the events and people mentioned.

The book opens with an elaborate and detailed introduction which describes the writer's motives and reasons for embarking on this project. He goes on to trace the early civilizations that preceded the establishment of the British Monarchy. He credits the British people with resisting all foreign influences beginning with the Romans and going on to the French, Dutch and Germans who had an important role to play in the affairs of the country. The British character and traditions are lauded and commended above all others.  This was something which was characteristic of the Victorian age in which Macaulay lived, when the British Empire was at the height of its powers.

He was still working on the fifth volume and the reign of William III when he died at the relatively young age of 59. For Macaulay and his contemporaries, Britain at that time represented the zenith of civilization. Macaulay himself was assigned the task of introducing English in British colonies, especially in India. Some of his controversial ideas included dividing the world into “civilization and barbarism” and his contempt of indigenous cultures. His famously insular outlook which he himself took great pride in was something which permeated through all his writings.

The History of England... was seen as an essentially Whig representation of events. It inspired a generation of British politicians and thinkers, the most notable among them being Winston Churchill. The philosophy and viewpoint it represents evokes a past era in which the politics of the world was completely different. Macaulay is also famous for having insisted on personally visiting many of the places he describes and thus introducing the concept of social history in addition to a mere political discourse.

In spite of all the attacks it received both when it was first published and later, the book remains a highly readable account of the history of the tiny island nation which went on to become a superpower.

Kiera's History Tour

Council Bluffs’ location has put the town into contact with a lot of history.  Lewis and Clark and the Mormon pilgrims came through, as did the westbound pioneers on the Oregon and California Trails.  Abraham Lincoln designated the town as milepost zero for the transcontinental railroad.  The first coast-to-coast automobile trip passed through and later the first transcontinental highway.  Council Bluffs was the birthplace of Omaha and first war-time mobile hospital.  It also boasted the state’s first nursing school and FM radio station as well as the largest rotary cell jail ever built.  This all created a lot of what we call history-- but at the time it wasn’t intended that way at all.  It was just normal people finding innovative ways to solve problems, inventing the future one day at a time.  And that has made for some really interesting tales that we intend to explore in this podcast series.

Council Bluffs’ location has put the town into contact with a lot of history. Lewis and Clark and the Mormon pilgrims came through, as did the westbound pioneers on the Oregon and California Trails. Abraham Lincoln designated the town as milepost zero for the transcontinental railroad. The first coast-to-coast automobile trip passed through and later the first transcontinental highway. Council Bluffs was the birthplace of Omaha and first war-time mobile hospital. It also boasted the state’s first nursing school and FM radio station as well as the largest rotary cell jail ever built. This all created a lot of what we call history-- but at the time it wasn’t intended that way at all. It was just normal people finding innovative ways to solve problems, inventing the future one day at a time. And that has made for some really interesting tales that we intend to explore in this podcast series.

Was Lady Macbeth a cunning, evil, manipulative, murderous villain, or a fierce, smart, badass influencer who did what needed to be done? Now I’m not saying conspiring to murder your husband’s boss is OK! (it’s bad!) But what’s a woman to do when she has IDEAS, a POINT OF VIEW and a PLAN and absolutely no “right” to show up in her power? 

I’m calling you, beckoning you, down a dimly lit hallway, a gravelly, uneven path, where we will hold up Lady Macbeth as our cautionary tale of what happens when you step outside the socio-political roles that history has written for YOU, for US, as WOMEN.

When we say - THIS IS WHAT I WANT, and then go after it.

When we show up in our sovereignty as WOMEN.

When we let our AMBITION show, even just a little.

When we stand naked and visible in our POWER.

We are going to LAY BARE all that history has given us on female agency, ambition and power by having juicy conversations with leading experts on women and gender studies, Medieval experts, and Shakespearean scholars about what life was actually like for women during Lady Macbeth’s time in history vs. the experience we live today. 

We’ll also talk with bad-ass women (like you!) who have laid their ambition out for all to see and have suffered the overt and subliminal consequences that are built into our social, corporate, and family structures. 

We’ve been conditioned for thousands of years as women to give up, deny and side-step our own agency. To not rock the boat and to never show up visibly in our own power. OR ELSE.

This show is all about revealing our current reality by unearthing the past, all in an effort to create change at scale in our future, for women everywhere. The BIG questions we will be grappling with are, “How far have we, as women, REALLY come since the Middle Ages?” and “How can we normalize women’s ambition, help them activate their agency, and stand firmly and boldly in their power?”
