Herbert Allen Giles (1845-1935) spent several years as a diplomat in China and in 1897 was appointed Cambridge University’s second professor of Chinese. His published works cover Chinese language and literature, history and philosophy.    This series of lectures, published as “China and the Chinese”, was given at Columbia University in 1902, to mark the establishment of a Chinese professorship there. The lectures were not intended for the specialist, more to urge a wider and more systematic study of China and its culture, and to encourage new students into the field.    While many of the observations are just as relevant today, others will remind us how much China has changed since the period of the Manchu Qing dynasty in which he wrote.

Sheikh Dawood Ayad Hamza stepped into the world on 1st November, 1968, in Tripoli.

Quranic Tajweed was a pure miracle of faith for him and this happened when his father gifted him a recording of the Quran reader “Abdul Basit Abdul Samad” on achieving success in school.Sheikh Dawood was mesmerized with Abdul Samad’s voice and this set the foundation for his determination to learn the nuances of “Tajweed”.

 He began by enrolling himself into a Quranic school in which became a medium to get acquainted with several Quran readers like Muhammad Sadiq Al Minshawy.

Acknowledging his fresh and prodigious talent,  his Sheikhs encouraged him to memorize the holy Quran and to gather hold over the rules of Quran recitation. This was met with success by Shaikh Dawood when he reached twenty years of age.

During his preliminary steps, he became one of the famous reciters in Libya and it came as no surprise when he was appointed as an Imam in Canada for more than 10 years.

Sheikh Hamza’s efforts to increase awareness and knowledge about the recitation of the Quran saw him visiting many parts of the world, namely, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, South Africa, Czechoslovakia, and Algeria.

Un día después de que el Papa Francisco declaró Venerable a Tata Vasco de Quiroga, reconociendo que vivió heroicamente las virtudes teologales, cardinales y afines, es decir, que es un ejemplo de santidad, Juan Diego Network (JDN) anuncio el lanzamiento de un reportaje sobre su vida que lleva por título: “Tata Vasco, el español que se hizo indígena”.  

Este innovador programa en audio puede ser consumido vía podcast o en la radio y se espera que a través del mismo la audiencia se adentre de una forma única a la vida de este hombre de Dios a través de personajes históricos de su época y de las diferentes personas que han sido parte de su causa de canonización. La atractiva narrativa irá guiando a la audiencia a lo largo de la primera temporada. 

El Papa Francisco tiene un especial afecto por Tata Vasco, refiere el P. Arce Gargollo, estudioso de la vida y acción de monseñor Vasco de Quiroga y quien es el motor de esta iniciativa que produce Juan Diego Network. En su viaje a México, el Papa quiso expresamente ir a Morelia y en la Santa Misa que celebró el 16 de febrero de 2016, habló ampliamente de Tata Vasco, diciendo que fue un hombre que amó tanto este lugar y se hizo hijo de esta tierra, por lo cual se puede decir que fue el “español que se hizo indio”. Recuerda el P. Pablo que el Papa Francisco, con emoción agradeció al cardenal Suárez Inda, “que haya querido que se celebrase esta eucaristía con el báculo de este hombre y el cáliz que usaba. Terminada la Misa el mismo Papa, consiente de que ese báculo y el cáliz son reliquias de una vida santa, estuvo al pendiente de que se resguardaran hasta entregarlas en mano al arzobispo en su propia casa”. 

Vasco de Quiroga nació en Madrigal de las Altas Torres, provincia de Ávila, España, alrededor de 1488. Estudió leyes en la Universidad de Salamanca. Trabajó para la corte del rey Carlos I, quien lo nombró Oidor de la Segunda Audiencia, máxima autoridad en la Nueva España. Llegó a México-Tenochtitlán el 9 de enero de 1531, exactamente once meses antes de la primera aparición de la Virgen de Guadalupe a San Juan Diego.  

Como integrante de la Real Segunda Audiencia de México, sobresalió en el buen trato que dio a los indígenas, de modo que acudían en masa a verlo para recibir consejo y solución jurídica a sus problemas. “Quiroga –apunta el P. Arce–, sobresale por la fundación de peculiares pueblos-hospital, uno cerca de la ciudad de México y otro en la ribera del lago de Pátzcuaro, Santa Fe de la laguna, donde los indígenas aprendieron a vivir como los primeros cristianos, ejerciendo la caridad en especial a los más necesitados.  

Siendo laico, en 1536 fue nombrado Primer Obispo de Michoacán. Los purépechas le llamaban Tata, es decir, papá o padre. Desarrolló una intensa labor pastoral, impartió una amplia catequesis práctica y amable, fundó el Colegio de San Nicolás, a modo de seminario, para indígenas y españoles, adelantándose así, dieciséis años a la recomendación emanada del Concilio de Trento. De los egresados de este Colegio ordenó a más de doscientos sacerdotes. Los purépechas le llamaban Tata, es decir, papá o padre. Un día después de que el Papa Francisco declaró Venerable a Tata Vasco de Quiroga, reconociendo que vivió heroicamente las virtudes teologales, cardinales y afines, es decir, que es un ejemplo de santidad, Juan Diego Network (JDN) anuncio el lanzamiento de un reportaje sobre su vida que lleva por título: “Tata Vasco, el español que se hizo indígena”. Este innovador programa en audio puede ser consumido vía podcast o en la radio y se espera que a través del mismo la audiencia se adentre de una forma única a la vida de este hombre de Dios a través de personajes históricos de su época y de las diferentes personas que han sido parte de su causa de canonización. La atractiva narrativa irá guiando a la audiencia a lo largo de la primera temporada. El Papa Francisco tiene un especial afecto por Tata Vasco, refiere el P. Arce Gargollo, estudioso de la vida y acción de monseñor Vasco de Quiroga y quien es el motor de esta iniciativa que produce Juan Diego Network. En su viaje a México, el Papa quiso expresamente ir a Morelia y en la Santa Misa que celebró el 16 de febrero de 2016, habló ampliamente de Tata Vasco, diciendo que fue un hombre que amó tanto este lugar y se hizo hijo de esta tierra, por lo cual se puede decir que fue el “español que se hizo indio”. Recuerda el P. Pablo que el Papa Francisco, con emoción agradeció al cardenal Suárez Inda, “que haya querido que se celebrase esta eucaristía con el báculo de este hombre y el cáliz que usaba. Terminada la Misa el mismo Papa, consiente de que ese báculo y el cáliz son reliquias de una vida santa, estuvo al pendiente de que se resguardaran hasta entregarlas en mano al arzobispo en su propia casa”. Vasco de Quiroga nació en Madrigal de las Altas Torres, provincia de Ávila, España, alrededor de 1488. Estudió leyes en la Universidad de Salamanca. Trabajó para la corte del rey Carlos I, quien lo nombró Oidor de la Segunda Audiencia, máxima autoridad en la Nueva España. Llegó a México-Tenochtitlán el 9 de enero de 1531, exactamente once meses antes de la primera aparición de la Virgen de Guadalupe a San Juan Diego. Como integrante de la Real Segunda Audiencia de México, sobresalió en el buen trato que dio a los indígenas, de modo que acudían en masa a verlo para recibir consejo y solución jurídica a sus problemas. “Quiroga –apunta el P. Arce–, sobresale por la fundación de peculiares pueblos-hospital, uno cerca de la ciudad de México y otro en la ribera del lago de Pátzcuaro, Santa Fe de la laguna, donde los indígenas aprendieron a vivir como los primeros cristianos, ejerciendo la caridad en especial a los más necesitados. Siendo laico, en 1536 fue nombrado Primer Obispo de Michoacán. Los purépechas le llamaban Tata, es decir, papá o padre. Desarrolló una intensa labor pastoral, impartió una amplia catequesis práctica y amable, fundó el Colegio de San Nicolás, a modo de seminario, para indígenas y españoles, adelantándose así, dieciséis años a la recomendación emanada del Concilio de Trento. De los egresados de este Colegio ordenó a más de doscientos sacerdotes. Los purépechas le llamaban Tata, es decir, papá o padre.
