On this exact date 50 years ago, Dick Tayler stunned the world by winning the 10,000 metre gold at the 1974 Christchurch Commonwealth Games – instantly becoming one of New Zealand’s athletics most iconic victories.
Dick later worked as a marketing manager for the Harness Racing Association, a brewing company and served as President of the Canterbury Rugby Supporters Club.
In 2014 he was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to athletics.
