  • Sneaky Dragon Episode 286

Ahoy, Sneakers! There is no nautical theme to this week’s show. We just felt like saying ahoy.
This week on Episode 286, Ian and Dave have more to say about ventriloquism; compare and contrast Mighty Mouse and Mickey Mouse; don’t rate early comic book artists very highly; do some off the top of their heads history on early comic books and Harvey Kurtzman; remember Plop!; are excited that Twin Peaks is back; confess what really scares them; have a YouTube recommendo; recommend getting them started young; become silly over The Beachcombers; do some TV schedule guesswork; dissect the Fall of Jimmy Fallon; and, finally, do a little VanCAF wrap up.
    Thanks for listening!
Never forget! About our two ongoing contests:

    * Have some dinner with Ian and Dave, and, if you want, watch Sneaky Dragon being recorded. All you have to do is send us a little message that says, “I’d like to eat with you!” and Ian and Dave will treat you to an after-show meal at their favourite White Spot.
    * Send us your story. That’s right. Just your story. If you need a prompt, Ian suggested “your secret origin” and Dave suggested “how how you found Sneaky Dragon” Please record a two to three minute story and send it to us via email ([email protected]) or our Facebook page. Or Skype Sneaky Dragon and leave a message on our voicemail. David will add a playlist for your story as well.

  • Sneaky Dragon Episode 285

Ahoy, Sneakers! Welcome to Episode 285 of the hit podcast Sneaky Dragon!
This week, Ian and Dave aren’t sure if they are at the top or bottom of the podcast; remember Walt Disney cartoons; view animated miscegenation; yell snakes on a wedding; meet mean Guys; eat slow and talk fast; enjoy mom’s cooking; sort of enjoy dad’s cooking; smell the roses; don’t want to hear themselves; dig ventriloquism and cringe-worthy magic; fall short of 10,000 hours; draw some comics; be obvious ninjas; offend Girl Guides everywhere; watch inappropriate sitcoms; get offended by Bad News Bears; get disappointed and mad; receive a listener’s story from Reid Jepson; play Beatles Rockband; have a Beatles epiphany; hate the Sixties; and, finally, get bossy about music.
    Thanks for listening.
    Secret Origins – Reid Jepson
For Reid’s story, I thought it would be wa-a-a-a-ay to obvious to choose Beatle songs, so I have made my usual selection of random songs that vaguely have something to do with the story:
Birthday Morning by The Association: Sure, I could have chosen “Birthday”, but, no, I went for this sweet, somewhat melancholy song that illicits those birthday feeling of anticipation and sadness.
Something Good (Is Going to Happen to Me) by Carla Thomas: That’s right. It’s my birthday and I’ll get all the presents I want to.
Bounce House by Junior Barsity feat. Bounce Veranda and Junior Ventura: That’s right! I have a dumb song called “Bounce House”. Don’t judge me. (When I came across this video on YouTube a few years ago, it was the first time I’d ever heard the phrase “bounce house”.)
The Disappointed by XTC: Reid’s feeling after opening his many, many presents and finding himself with some lameass, junky Beatles Rockband game. Toss!
Younger Generation by The Lovin’ Spoonful: Reid’s dad finds the nopened video game and shakes his head at the younger generation’s casual dismissal of the past.
My Lucky Day by Jason Faulkner: Encouraged by his dad, Reid finally plays Beatles Rockband and makes an amazing discovery that will change his life!

Bonus title card! While looking for a suitable image to debase, I came upon the one below. I couldn’t resist doing it, but not as the only title card because it would have been so cheap – just a simple silhouette of Sneaky D in a window. So lazy!

Hola, Sneakers! Welcome to Episode 284. This week on the show, Ian and David recommend you sell now; debate the most formative time; agree on the best flags; can’t decide if they should take the high road or the low road; get stumped by ghost songs; have a short attention span; eat filthy sandwiches; feel that one lottery win is enough; listen to a “One That Got Away” story from listener Marcus Harwell; move on with their friendships; experience bad school discipline; experience bad parental discipline; finish things our parents dreamed of doing; live up to their parents expectations – for better of worse; feel left behind by art; think art could be taught better; and, finally, get the blues in the kitchen.
    Thanks for listening.
The One That Got Away – Marcus Harwell
This week, we heard Marcus’ touching story of bored schoolboys, angry principals and adult mind-fuckery. Here is the playlist:
Schooldays – The Starjets – I don’t care if the lyrics have little to do with Marcus’ story. It’s a great song about school and a good set-up for…

Friends – The Beach Boys – From their great album of the same name, Friends is a jaunty little song celebrating the friendship of Marcus and his two pals, Mark and Craig.

Brink of Disaster – Lesley Gore – A song of wrong-headed love and temptation. Childhood friendships can often be as torrid as romantic relationships, speaking as someone who had more than one tearful fight with childhood friends. Marcus is under the spell of Mark, the bad boy who leads him down a path that can only result in…

Headmaster – The Kinks – The fateful meeting with the school principal. Time for some begging and heartfelt soul-searching (or the appearance thereof).

What’s Happening?!?! – The Byrds – As the unusual punctuation suggests, this song reflects Marcus’ confusion as he leaves the principal’s office with the jubilant and unrepentant Mark. Marcus begins to wonder…

You’re Supposed to Be My Friend – The 1990s – This song could be read from either Mark’s or Marcus’ point of view as they begin to drift apart and become almost strangers on the playground.

  • Sneaky Dragon Episode 283

Hola, Sneakers! Welcome to Episode 283 of Sneaky Dragon. Well, it’s all back to normal at Sneaky Dragon HQ as we’ve got the big two episode movie quiz out of the way. All we have to worry about this week is Dave’s surprising starts; awkward small talk; classy sex toys; sneaky ghost cars; maudlin Gen X reminiscing; Sneakception; tricky comedy; sea skeletons; Dave as humanity’s base model; time travel tips; haunted house burials; sexy clowns; Schoolhouse Rocks remarks; jingo jingle; cartoon bubblegum music; Dave’s best Archie song; funny animals redux; newspaper funnies and strips that changed during their run; cookie time (!); and, finally, raccoons are gross.
    Thanks for listening.

The best Archies song (according to Dave):

That curiously religious song from Josie and the Pussycats:

Welcome back, Sneakers, to part two of the Movie Quiz plus some other nonsense. This week on the show we learn that Ian really likes comic books and Dave really likes Whit Stillman – if you didn’t already know that. Also, Ian and Dave have a new giveaway; they discuss some local politics generally; would like to just leave it there; don’t like movie stunts as movie stunts; tackle the final part of the Movie Quiz; are tired of tired franchises; discover Ian is in someone’s pocket; meet Fishy Goldman; have outdoor sex; visit Lego hell; like the amazing J-Law; decide where The Simpsons went wrong; like when bad movie outcomes are good; talk about what makes a good story; explore male dynamics and self-acceptance; are looking forward to…; learn Ian is a muscle-bound romantic; hear once again about Ian’s very least favourite, most terrible film of all time (and, no, it’s not Heaven’s Gate or Howard the Duck or Striptease or Battlefield Earth or The Room or Movie 43); Boobs McGee returns with tragic consequences; and, finally, we learn that Dave is a jackass and Ian is a Brad Bird acolyte.
    Thanks for listening.

  • Sneaky Dragon Episode 281

Ciao, Sneakers! Welcome to Episode 281 of Sneaky Dragon! This week is all about movies, movies, movies, but before we get to that we have to listen to Ian and Dave relax; then marvel at rock star hi-jinks; discover that Pia is on political cartoon website The Nib (so you should check that out); be surprised that a Simpsons story by Ian is on the web. Also, Ian stumps Dave with a musical reference; they admit it’s a sausage party, but we’re sure you knew that; Ian nit-picks the Bible; Dave is no longer angry at himself; Dave is tempted by Satan; Ian is horrified by Dave’s disgusting sandwich; Dave isn’t into Biblical extrapolation; Ian was conscripted, but Dave’s a volunteer; and, finally, part one of the big movie quiz: Ian and Dave more or less answer the following questions: Most over-rated film; Most under-rated film; film they secretly love; favourite US action film; favourite non-US action film; favourite drama; favourite US horror; favourite non-US horror; favourite comedy; favourite Disney; favourite sc-fi; favourite blaxploitation; favourite US animation; favourite non-US animation; favourite superhero movie; favourite western; favourite film noir; favourite porno; favourite film never released to DVD; favourite musical; favourite concert film; favourite cinematic documentary; favourite film from a female director; and, finally, childhood favourite.
Ian and Dave will continue this list next week and answer such deep questions as: favourite director; most romantic film; and most visually striking film.
    Thanks for listening.

Hola, Sneakers! Welcome to Episode 280 of the Sneaky Dragon podcast – the podcast no one can describe to their friends!
This week on the show, Ian and Dave blossom; take a skill-testing question; still can’t put the genie back in the bottle; watch Riverdale and wait for Sabrina to show up; are too old for nihilism; enjoy some TV including Better Call Saul, the great finale of Grimm, and Anne [of Green Gables]; debate recontextualizing classics; get a visit from Boobs McGee; have a Seth sighting; have the Great Pearl Onion Debate of 2017; muse about art, addiction and missing out on life; contemplate recharging the spirit through work; take a Jazz Age slang test; discuss Dave’s playlist for last week’s The One That Got Away story; and, finally, eulogize the “fenny parthing” bike.

This is the alternate and preferred title card for Episode 279. Lezah suggested this idea after the original title card was finished, but I’m sure we can agree that this is the better idea!

Hola, Sneakers! Welcome to Episode 279 of Sneaky Dragon! This week on the gosh-darn show, Ian and Dave start backwards; marvel at all the atheist podcasts; discover God worrks the swing shift; experience awkward religiosity; taste the abomination of McDonald’s all-day breakfast; awaken Ian’s suspicions; learn Dave is still a teenager (but, I mean, dude, look at this sweet ride!); give you a chance to help out Dave; watch Song of the Thin Man and find a young Dean Stockwell; come to terms with comedy spanking; discuss the great Hollywood movies like Anchors Aweigh, On the Town, Singing in the Rain, The Bandwagon, and Meet Me in St. Louis; argue the differences between Hollwood musicals and Broadway musicals, ask, “Whither musicals?”; talk payphones, quarters and late-night bus rides; and, finally, hear another entry about “The One That Got Away” – this time from Dave’s wife, Lezah.
    Thanks for listening.

The One That Got Away – Lezah Williamson
In honour of this week’s story, we are using all Who songs for this playlist – starting with:
Magic Bus – Despite the dubious, if melodic, pleas to get on the magic bus, Lezah wisely refuses, preferring instead to work on her aerobic health and walk to school.

The Kids Are All Right – Lezah, a highly responsible woman in her early twenties, would never put her young charges at risk – except throwing them in the path of hunky pizza servers and filling an elevator with rock stars.

Who Are You – In the elevator, no one knows who anyone is – the Irish hikers are confused by the horseback-riding karate team.

Run, Run, Run – Lezah and her team wisely turn tail and run out of the hotel, across the street and into the waiting arms of a pepperoni pizza.

So Sad About Us – Upon discovering WHO (geddit?) she had run away from, Lezah sadly ponders what could have been – i.e., sex with Roger Daltrey.
Please watch this movie one day:

It’s not the greatest, but it’s pretty good:

Ciao, Sneakers! Welcome to Episode 278 of Sneaky Dragon. This week on the show, Ian and Dave are feeling sleepy; put up with rebellious dogs; pump up their ratings with a little laundry talk; have good bad neighbours; experience punch-drunk love; play their personas; have trouble putting the genie back in the bottle; wonder about leprechauns and gremlins; go deep on the topic of bugs bunny; make ado about the Marx Brothers; ponder a new sidecast; invent some family language; show complete mastery; ruminate on their own podcast; show sincerity; see an okay band; get sentimental; feel the sugar fast and the furious; and, finally, make a visit to Bucksville.

    That classic Bugs Bunny cartoon:

    Dept. of Corections:

Dave was slightly off on his gremlins timeline. According to Wikipedia, gremlins were invented as a reason for mysterious airplane-related mishaps by servicemen in the Royal Air Force in the 1920s. The Walt Disney gremlin film, based on a story by Roald Dahl, was never actually produced, but its publicity led to Robert Clampett’s Bugs Bunny cartoon.
