  • Validation Even In Conflict
Empathy and validation are two very closely linked concepts. Validation is when we convey our acceptance of another person’s experiences and emotions, whereas empathy is when we see the world as they do and truly put ourselves in their shoes. One can validate without actually being empathetic and vice versa. However, when we combine the two, we get a powerful combination that can instantly uplift someone’s mood by making them feel seen and heard.

  • Captivating Stories
Captivating people usually refers to telling a story that leaves them listening like children (in a good way). Storytelling is a big topic that is often made overly complex, but there are many ways of creating this feeling in small, everyday ways. To captivate others is no easy feat, but the material and ability lies within all of us. We just have to know where it is and how to access it.
An easy way to imagine everyday storytelling is that your life is a series of stories—mini-stories, to be exact. Instead of giving one-word answers, get into the habit of framing your answers as a story with a point. It creates more engagement, lets you show your personality, and allows for smoother conversation. The bonus here is that you can prepare these before a conversation.

  • Follow The Evidence
Confirmation bias is also the most prominent way that we fail to simply follow the evidence. If we perform research and keep an open mind, our task is simple: just follow the arrows where they point. But all too often, we are seduced into following the wrong arrows. These include the cognitive distortions of focusing on “must” and “ should”, black-and-white thinking, the Dunning-Kruger Effect, and labeling.

  • The SCAMPER Method
The SCAMPER method forces you to think in foreign and novel directions. It stands for (S) substitute, (C) combine, (A) adapt, (M) minimize/magnify, (P) put to another use, (E) eliminate, and (R) reverse. It utilizes the general concept of force fitting, which is when you force unfamiliar concepts and ideas together mentally, thereby creating necessarily new patterns of thought.

  • Recognizing Abuse
We live in a world where everyone has boundaries, strong or weak. As such, we must be mindful of not only our own boundaries, but also those of the ones around us. If someone has overly rigid boundaries, they might end up stepping over our own. Alternatively, if we have loose boundaries, we might be subjected to abuse from those who enjoy controlling us for their own benefit. Anyone who repeatedly violates our boundaries despite being warned is likely being abusive, and must be dealt with appropriately.

  • A Man’s Name Is Called...
A man hears his name spoken and is taken away by other men. Later, he dies under the care of others. What happened? Think of the context where this is possible. The answer is a courtroom, where a judge calls his name to confirm conviction. He is later executed in custody—under the care of others.
Lastly, a woman is slowly walking outside on a hot Sunday afternoon when she spots a ferocious tiger. Instead of running away, she runs toward the tiger. Why? Think of the only time one might run toward a tiger. This can be in a zoo, where it is inside an enclosure and thus safe.

  • A Simple Roadmap
In previous chapters, we’ve discussed some of the specific ways of thinking about social interactions that can make them more positive. They’re a bit indirect, and have to do with perception, psychology, and how to position yourself for the best outcome. They draw upon our brain’s tendency to make positive associations, where perhaps none actually exist.

  • Asserting Boundaries
We tend to think being agreeable and accommodating are positive traits. They are, but only to a certain extent. Studies have shown that too much of either conveys a negative impression to others—precisely what you want to prevent by not asserting yourself. Thus, it seems to make more sense to assert yourself on a consistent basis and stop the need for people-pleasing.

  • Set Up A Default Choice
Indecisiveness comes down to an intolerance of uncertainty, and often to informational overload. In our modern, technologically advanced world, we’re constantly bombarded with an endless set of options in all spheres of life. We’re also saturated with all the information we come across on a daily basis, and this makes it hard to decide on things because we’re always looking for a better choice. We can consciously decide, however, to embrace imperfection and take on risks in the service of achieving what we care about.
Another way to tackle information overload is to ascertain what you need to know in order to make a decision, and identify the outcome you’re looking for. Then, narrow down possible decisions and take a leap of faith by choosing any because the opportunity cost involved becomes very low.

  • Validating Amidst Disagreement
It’s one thing to validate someone when their grievances are aimed at someone else. It’s another thing entirely to do so when you are the source of their frustrations. Another challenging scenario is validating someone when they’re espousing views or thoughts that are morally abhorrent to you. However, in both these cases, it is essential that we focus on the person and not the content of their argument. Always remember that validation is not agreement; you can validate without accepting someone’s views.
