  • Storytell In Reverse
Second, we learn to tell stories in reverse using the fishbone diagram analysis. This is a powerful tool to deal with the problem of cause and effect and illuminate our thinking to the possibilities of alternative perspectives.

  • Ironic Humor
The final technique is all about dissecting misdirection and how it can lead to big laughs. First, we start with sarcasm and irony. Sarcasm is when you say something you don’t mean in an attempt to make fun or ridicule something. Irony, on the other hand, refers to situations where something happens that is the opposite of what you’d expect. This is more observational humor on your part, because you would be pointing out a contrast rather than creating one. Irony has a surprising amount of versatility because of the many places it can be applied. You can be on the lookout for ironic contrast between words and body language and tone, ironic hyperbole, and even use an ironic simile for yourself (lightweight as a brick).

  • Battle Confirmation Bias
The most glaring example of this is confirmation bias, wherein we are deaf and blind to evidence that doesn’t support what we think. In other words, we see what we want to see, and we can make a belief appear out of thin air. This is dangerous because it brings the ability to ignore reality. You eventually become entrenched in an echo chamber of reinforcing information that will definitely lead you astray.

  • Start With Who You Are
We live in a world where everyone has boundaries, strong or weak. As such, we must be mindful of not only our own boundaries, but also those of the ones around us. If someone has overly rigid boundaries, they might end up stepping over our own. Alternatively, if we have loose boundaries, we might be subjected to abuse from those who enjoy controlling us for their own benefit. Anyone who repeatedly violates our boundaries despite being warned is likely being abusive, and must be dealt with appropriately.
“I” statements are an invaluable tool when it comes to communicating your boundaries to others. These statements aim to convey how particular actions committed by others make us feel. If, say, we are annoyed by our spouse not doing their share of chores, we might tell them “I feel anxious and taken for granted when you…”.

  • Mystery Weight Loss
A woman goes into a store and piles a shopping cart to the brim with things. She leaves the store without paying, yet nobody stops her or calls the police. Why? Think of situations where one can fill a cart with items that don’t need to be paid for. The answer is trash. The woman is an employee of the store who left to throw trash in the dumpster.
A man walks into a small room and presses a button. In a few seconds, he loses twenty pounds. How? This is another riddle where many different answers fit the criteria, but the official one is that he enters an elevator, losing twenty pounds as he descends to a lower floor.
A man living in a fifty-story building decides to jump out of the window, but survives without sustaining any injuries. How? The fifty-story part might confuse you, but the answer is that he jumps out of a first floor window, allowing him to survive without injuring himself.

  • How to Avoid Invalidating Others
Some of the most common ways in which we might invalidate others include using undermining language, having judgmental attitudes, trying to fix another person’s problems when they just want to be heard, etc. Avoid using words like “but” by replacing them with “and” while also being mindful of your tone while conversing. Don’t exercise judgement and remember that you are not being asked for a solution, the other person simply wants their thoughts to be heard.
When someone invalidates you, it’s essential to establish clear boundaries, especially if the other person is close to you. If not, you may simply choose to end the conversation and cease contact. But if they are close, you’ll want to calmly use “I” statements to convey how the invalidation made you feel and set boundaries that establish how you want to be treated in the future.

  • Process Versus Outcome
Three mental models are specifically suited toward our purpose of practical intelligence and acting within the bounds of common sense. First, we discuss the difference between evaluating a process versus an outcome. Often we can fall into the trap of outcome bias, wherein we ignore our decision process simply because something turned out favorably. Second, we learn to tell stories in reverse using the fishbone diagram analysis. This is a powerful tool to deal with the problem of cause and effect and illuminate our thinking to the possibilities of alternative perspectives. Third, we come to separating correlation from causation, and understanding the true relationships between events we observe.

  • In-Groups
Sometimes humans are painfully predictable. Even without reading the contents of this chapter, you probably could have guessed that humans seek the following elements. We’re all just selfish, hairless apes. At least now you know the specifics.
People want to talk about themselves and express their thoughts and emotions. Studies have shown that it feels just about as good as sex to do so— psychologically, not physically.
People want to find those similar to them—because of all the assumptions that go along with those shared traits. If you do X, that means you do Y and Z, right? You’re just like my favorite person in the world, me!

  • Why Are People So Closed Minded?
An integral part of crystal-clear thinking is to be open-minded. Being open-minded means to hear evidence or an argument and not make an instant judgment. It means being able to say “I don’t know” and resist that feeling of uncertainty. These are all difficult because we are wired to do the opposite.
